I like it.
I was a big fan of the mark 1, but never really liked the bloated mk2 much.
This looks like a return to form, much sharper lines than the Mr Blobby model.

PS I thought the S3 just had a bigger turbo? The 210 BHP SEATs were an ECU upgrade.
Conversely I always disliked the MK1 but am a fan of the MK2 and the MK2 facelift I also like this new version! I was a big fan of the mark 1, but never really liked the bloated mk2 much.

Not really to be honest, I find it incredibly dull, looks like any other generic 3 box saloon. I get the point that manufacturers don't want to take too many risks but I really am getting bored of the tracing paper method of design that most of the German manufacturers seem intent on following these days.M
Rather like that. The Old car with the face lift could look a bit bug eyed at times because the headlamps were massive. The front also didn't seem to gel that well with the rest of the car depending on the colour. The MK2 without the face-lift always looked the more cohesive car and I'm glad they've taken it back that way. This looks smart to me, then again I have become rather fond of minimalism in design.

Of topic slightly does the old 1.8T actually use the S3 engine, I always thought the S3 had forged pistons and crank?
I always assumed the VRS was the VAG 1.8t engine with a bit more boost?
The Mk1 had the same engine as the TT 180bhp.I always assumed the VRS was the VAG 1.8t engine with a bit more boost?
The TT225, later S3 and Cupra R had the 225bhp version with a bigger turbo and (I think) some upgraded internals.
As standard the 180bhp was a bit unresponsive, but re-mapping awakened the beast. My re-mapped Mk1 had acceleration on a par with the 225bhp TT & Cupra R(but with a nice, quick spool-up) when tested on private land.

Do Merc/Audi/BMW have counterparts for this car? I don't think so.
Octavia has always been a C Segment 4-door saloon (or 5-door estate). Merc/Audi/BMW have C-Segment hatches/ cabs/coupes, but no saloons.
The nearest thing to Octavia from Germany is VW's Jetta/Bora which is the same car with different skin.
The Octavia is and always has been a 5 door hatch back or 5 door estate car. The origional is based on the bora of the time which was a 4 door saloon. Merc/Audi/BMW have saloons not hatches in this sector.Octavia has always been a C Segment 4-door saloon (or 5-door estate). Merc/Audi/BMW have C-Segment hatches/ cabs/coupes, but no saloons.

The 1.8 20v turbo VAG engine comes in many variants of the same basic engine. Differences run to valve sizes, internals used and turbos used as well as ancillary placement etc. The S3 and cupra R use a 'BAM' (engine code) variant of the engine and the octavia as well as the cupra use the 'AUQ' variant of the engine. The BAM engine has marginally stronger internals, not sure about the turbo though.I always assumed the VRS was the VAG 1.8t engine with a bit more boost?

The Octavia has never been available with four doors; always five.

So the 4 door Octavia I looked at a couple of months back, with a boot - was a figment of my imagination then!!kambites said:

Yup, must have been unless someone welded the rear window up and cut the boot in half with new hinges. There has never been a four-door Octavia. Nothing to see here - move along

Can you name an exciting looking 3 box saloon in the Octavia's price range (or any really?)
I think the new one looks quite refreshing personally.
If you want wacky I'm sure SEAT will be doing a people carrier looking hatch based on the new platform.

Looks understated and elegant. Like an Audi without the apparent cock factor some say they've cultivated in recent years.
Exactly. I quite like this, I just want a sensibly priced reasonably quick practicle car.... I'll probably end up with Tonkaesque Scout version though coz I'm getting old and I like ride quality nowadays...Broken said:
