I know it's been said before but, the thing is with the Panamera is that you can't loathe it once you've driven it. It's such an excellent car. And the economy, with the cruise on, at 100, is just amazing...
Yes, but this is PH, where opinions based on no experience whatsoever matter...
You are right; god i would love to experience the economy, with the cruise on, at 100. My life is not complete without this allegedly 'amazing' experince!!

This is a classic Panamera thread; it's so ugly etc yet Monkey is obviously a fan and he's driven/had some pretty fantastic cars so is probably not a bad judge. When you look at the "knockers" to see what's in their garage I have seen a 350Z, a Skyline and an Impreza. I think it's fair to say, they are in a position to judge a fugly...
A general and b*llocks comment. I think the Panamera is fugly!

Have to agree with that. You won't find many people that would describe the Panamera as a looker.

My point is - the Panamera's absurd looks, coupled with it's equally absurd capabilities, give it great character. It's fat and strange looking - but great. OK - I'll grant that 'amazing' is a bit of a lame way to describe economy and, with hindsight, perhaps 'remarkable' might have been a better choice of word. Great car though. Because it can handle silly speeds. Really, really silly speeds. I can see what Harris is saying - there is nothing else like it.

What, you mean a quick but practical 4\5 door with an enlarged boot? I don't think this is a unique niche that the Panamera has created. How about the large number of estate cars already available that fulfil that exact same criteria? I can't think of anything a Panamera would do differently\better than any of the uber estates currently on offer, proof that the right badge and brilliant marketing can make you believe you are driving something unique.

Up to a point. But the Panamera can be driven stupidly fast. It is a driver's car in general, the Panamera and the diesel one differs only by dint of it's fuel. It handles and brakes like a Porsche. Not like a Big Merc or Audi. I love big Mercs and Audis - 5 series as well. But the Panamera is way North of there in the way it rewards the keen driver. Believe me, I hated the bloody thing til' I drove one.

Yes my limited time in it certainly proved it was very capable for a car of it's size.

Don't get me wrong I really wanted to like the Panamera, on paper it seemed like my ideal car, a practical, quick, 4 door produced by one of the best drivers car makers in the business, I'm just disappointed it doesn't hit the right note aesthetically, I felt like crying when I first saw the pics of it published. For me the car I choose to drive has to be the complete package, one that appeals to me on all levels including how it looks. Shame, I'd probably be in one now if it weren't so ugly.

A general and b*llocks comment. I think the Panamera is fugly!

Obviously I didn't contextualise my comment clearly enough for you so will try again.

Unfortunately, the prejudices regarding the cars looks seem to preclude any fair debate over it's abilities.

My point is that those commenting on it also happen to drive some pretty sh*t looking cars themselves so are obviously in a good position to judge its aesthetics but thank you for your comment and will reflect upon how I can make my comments less open to misunderstanding.

My personal opinion on the car is its hardly ground-breaking in its looks and perhaps didn't take a great deal of radical thought but it obviously has a lot of ability given Harris' feedback to date. If I could afford it, I would probably try one.

No you did and I thought the comment was general and b*llocks as I said.

None of the cars you mentioned cost a fraction of the Panamera, but that aside, your comment is somewhat offensive to the owners of said vehicles. They do not deserve comparison to the Porsche faeces.

If you are trying to tell me it is like chicken i.e. bland, boring but has some nutritional merit, I have some sympathy. However, forget not that this particular chicken is covered in a sauce that is so repugnant it makes a large number of people, myself included, want to vomit on sight without even trying it. If it deserves a place on this site, it should be password encoded and come with a health warning before entrance.

The Panamera; surely the best reason man has ever created to be poor!

What brilliant marketing would that be exactly?

My take on this is this - look are subjective, but anyone who has DRIVEN any significant distance in a Panamera, diesel or otherwise, knows what a fantastic package they are.

Personally I prefer the diesel to the Hybrid S, but the GTS would be my preference.

The Porsche brand is a cleverly nurtured, long established and very well known aspirational brand. Let's face it, if the Panamera had a Kia badge on it, I am pretty sure there wouldn't be as many people ready to defend it no matter how well it drove.

As far as a replacement goes, I'd try the Audi A6 Bi-Turbo Avant. A diesel estate quicker than a 911....

Perhaps, but there's a difference between brand management and marketing, no? The Porsche brand is built on strong products over 60+ years, and I would expect their marketing cost per sale is among the lowest in the car industry.

In terms of looks, I think that Porsche are in a tricky place - if they don't include some recognisable Porsche styling cues as they expand their range, they risk alienating some of their existing customers, if they go down a different route with something totally fresh, they'll be castigated by internet aesthetes like yourself. Tough call for them, but they're selling quite a few Panameras with strong margins, so who knows, maybe they know what they're doing after all?

Chris does the current Panamera still have the paddle shifts that are backwards compared to the other cars?
