Lets be honest
Its not a car for the self confessed petrolhead.
Terrible dashboard plastics, no leather, no toys and worst of all its only a 4 cylinder
I thought that was the point of a petrol head? no gadgets, just raw driving Its not a car for the self confessed petrolhead.

This is what Pistonheads is all about, imho. If you don't get Caterham, why even come here?! You may not want to own one, they may not be capable of withstanding an accident with a truck, and the lack of heated electric seats is a major downer, but who wouldn't want a drive?
That looked like so much fun I'm actually depressedDagnut said:

Can't say I didn't warn you! Was amused when YouTube threw this up during processing:
It is shockingly shaky but I hadn't realised how much the aluminium tonneau we'd clamped the camera to was flapping about. My mind was on other matters! As I said though, it does give an accurate impression of what it's like. Your eyeballs are pretty much doing the same!

Believe me, I sank one in a single gulp when I got home!
Had I been there I would have paid! Come to think of it, that mix of exhilaration and terror would make a good thread all of its own. Spinning a Caterham when you don't expect it is right up there. I managed to spin a Roadsport 150 on the A1 coming off the roundabout at Belhaven which was just a bit greasy. I had to force my eyes open after a 270 degree spin that I didn't hold either. Mind you, my son loved it.Edited by Gorbyrev on Friday 21st December 12:39

BTW, in this age of increasingly techy and subtle aero assisted track day toys, the good 'ol recipe of a "rampantly powerful snarly engine up front, passing lots of power to a couple of small wheels at the back all housed in a small footprint" seems endearingly simple yet soooooo much fun. None of this steer it with your finger tips rubbish neither.......... ;-)
My first car back in 1995 was a Caterham 1700 SuperSprint in the Prisoner colour scheme. 11 years and 35000 miles later I sold it when I emigrated to Vancouver.
The 7 is one of the great continuities of life. It's like the BBC and a fine cup of tea. Whatever else may happen these things stay the same.
2013 will see my return to Caterham ownership. I'll have to drive a fair way to find some nice twisties (Duffy Lake road between Pemberton and Lilloet is closest) but life without a 7 just doesn't make sense.

You had a caterham for your first car? Respect. The 7 is one of the great continuities of life. It's like the BBC and a fine cup of tea. Whatever else may happen these things stay the same.

Sorry but all sympathy lost when you said you're within driving distance of Pemberton! Enjoyed two trips mountain biking there and both were the most amazing time on two wheels I've ever had... I'll trade twisty B-roads for easy access to those trails if you fancy a swap? If you want to keep in touch with home and fly the flag maybe a Bowler EXR-S is the way forward for the logging roads? I had an epic drive to Tyax Lodge from Pemberton that would have been a lot more fun in one of those. Shameless plug but we've got a Christmas roadtest on this beast coming up... OK, bit different from a Seven but given your local terrain and all that!
