Would *love* to drive an old Rolls Royce, just to experience that sort of quality wafting. I can't ever see myself buying one though.. far too much of a risk!

Huge presence in these proper English waftmobiles.

What is the power output on the Silver Shadows?

And on the non-turbo charged Bentleys?
Adequate wink

I've had my Shadow II for almost 10 years now and it's the best car I've ever owned. I'll keep it forever.

I think that the 6.7 litre non-turbo was about 175bhp when they eventually had to disclose it.

I don't think I would pay any extra for a car just because its had a celebrity owner. Especially since the whole Jimmy Saville thing and that range rover that someone is now stuck with.

It was a "Carawagon", a camper conversion, if someone did use it to sleep in would be hillarious to tap on the window and appear in full Savile regalia.

Think the Freddie Mercury connection is worth something but not enough for it to be worth significantly more than any other half decent Shadow, if it was like John Lennons Roller, i.e. very specific to him then I could see why it would be expensive but as it is it is just a shadow with a famous ex owner.

I think the guide price is £11,000. If there are two keen fans bidding against each other, it could go much higher.

It was last used for the premiere for We Will Rock You which was a long time ago so I fear it may need more than £11,000 spending on it to get it running smoothly.

Aside from that, my wife says I can buy it if I fund it by selling my XKR!

Wow! How did they manage to get such low power?? biggrin

Good as a wedding car but otherwise i wouldn't touch one.

I knew a bloke who had a couple he used for his sideline in Wedding car hire. He once told me he upset the owners club once by stating that he'd like to fit a Jag 5.3 V12 engine as it was far better.

Only £11k. Del Boys lime green Capri is up for auction at Coys soon. Estimate £24-28K.

So was this the fairy feller's master-stroke?

It is such an appropriate car for Freddie even if all the documentaries showed him being whizzed round in black Mercs.

Oh why did there have to be a Turbo R on the bottom of that page? I've only just got over my last period of obsession of pondering which organs I'd sell to have one!

It wasnt low, it was "Adequate", it isnt a huge amount of power, granted but it did have around 300 pounds/ft of torque at a whisper quiet 2500 rpm, plus it wasnt that heavy, ok you wouldnt want it on your foot but at 2.1 tonnes it is lighter than most modern SUV's, in fact I did read that a specced up diesel Audi Cabrio weighs pretty much that.

Back then people werent fixated on power figures, most people didnt have a clue how many bhp their car had, I think they did it on displacement and assumptions lot more, they knew a 2.0 was better than a 1.6 and a 3.0 Capri was proper fast, a lot didnt understand turbos and that a 2.0 Cosworth was much faster than the 2.8 Capri, they knew a Rolls Royce was fast enough but supremely comfortable and would doff their caps dutifully.

I think now, rather than driving a car and seeing if we enjoy it for what it is, we fixate on numbers and assume more is always better, its like choosing a partner soleley on Bra size.

Adequate power was the RR mantra back then. I recall getting in to a bit of a duel with a Shad on a motorway; his lordship seemed to be sitting about 5 feet higher in the Roller than I was in my 6 month old company Golf MK 1 GTI.

My maxed-out velocity turned out to be about 5 mph more than an RR Shadow could muster; (I think the sheer amount of frontal area on the Rolls was his limiting factor).

His Lordship was not best pleased.....

I'm not saying that Mercury has done anything like Savile, just that paying more for a celebrity owned car as an investment is not always a good idea.
