RE: E-Class coupe and cabrio refreshed
Discussion
In terms of S-Class fit, I just had an S350 4matic in France and thought the fit was pretty good - easily better than the last E-Class. Safety gubbins were quite impressive - it had the stereo safety camera which altered the headlight spread and tracked lanes providing feedback through the steering wheel like my ps3 controller. I think Mercedes is really getting its act together.

I have been tentatively looking at the current shape E-Class Coupe for a while now (in Petrol 350 Sport guise)
I really like the first generation - before the (very) mild facelift added the horrid DRLs in a chrome bar running along the bumper grilles.
But the stupid rear quarter light that spoils the whole 'pillarless' design, bugs the life out of me - I wonder if they have engineered that out of the design with this facelift, as they should have done in the first place!!

Whilst it is laden with nice technology, it's fit and finish is definitely not up to the usual S Class standards.
Yes, it's slightly better than the C and E Class models, but they are not really benchmarks to compare an S Class against!
Grab the dashboard, and move it up and down... In the one I currently have as a hire car, it moves up and down with ease and even to a point where it disconnects from it's base. everyone who has seen that is shocked this is the case in a £70k car!
Agree the door cards are better, compared to the rather bland plastic feeling ones in the E Class...
But, on the whole, the S Class doesn't feel special anymore. And I am comparing to the W126 and W140 Mercedes I have had, and still have two W140s.
Sit in one of those then tell me if this new S Class has a decent finish....
Even my previous W220 felt 'better-built' than this new model. The new model doesn't even have double glazing anymore - that was standard on the W220 and W140 models.
I'm not knocking it as a car - it's lovely to drive, the 3.0 CDI engine is more than adequate and excellent on fuel (I get 40mpg on my daily commute).
They just need to imprive the quality inside the cabin to grab the panache back from the 7 Series / A8 / XJ (which seem to currently have a better fit and finish compared to the Mercs).
It looked nice until I saw the shot of the side, it's a big disappointment in design. The rear end is horrible and the angled line down the side of the body make the back wheels look tiny. What's with the front wheel being dwarfed and buried in the wheel arch.
Just as I was getting to like Mercedes design it gets worse.

pSyCoSiS - I read a comment a few years ago from a Merc executive who said that their biggest challenge was selling a car that cost the same as a Honda to build for Merc money. Says it all really. When I got married we had a '73 600 Pullman as our wedding car. The interior fit on the latest S wouldnt compare to that either.

Fair point - they have succeeded in that sense then! Alot of the time nowadays, it's about brand image - not the quality you are getting for your money.Ah, the 600 Pullman - the epitome of quality and one of my dream cars!
That was even more oppulent than any S Class that followed suit since...

Interesting comment regarding the cost of making one of these cars. It does make me wonder what the markup is on 15k's worth of 'essential' extras.Interior looks the same as the old one.
Are they doing anything about the noisy E220/E250 engine? (Apparently it's due to all the fuel pump into the engine to achieve the desired MPG/Euro ratings which in turn caused diesel knock.)
I had a 12 plate E220 for a week and the drone at any speeds was unbearable.
