I don't have a guilty pleasure for the XJ-S. I have a loud and forthright pleasure for the XJ-S. WANT!

The only way to judge a V12XJS is to own one, not guess how awful they are/can be.
After 13 years it was worth doing up properly, it only ever stopped once, the £1.50 fuel pump relay.
Mine is fully modified, 5 speed getrag box plus many other bits.
It is/has been worth all spends, issues and fuel, clients loved it and it never failed to impress when squeezing it in to a car parking space.
A car of real character, especially now and yes I have lost the back end without swiping anything.

God I want one.

This Lister variant is taking up far too much of my brainspace at the moment.

Don't think this is a genuine TWR XJRS, should have a beige leather TWR embossed Momo steering wheel!
And TWR embossed Into the headrests !
It's not a Jaguarsport XJRs, it's a TWR XJS.

TWR were making a few changes before Jaguar and TWR formally partnered on the XJRS.

I've owned a TWR XJS, and a facelift XJS 4.0. Currently have an E-type V12, and an XJRS. Love them both for different reasons, but neither are practical cars.

My old boss had a XJS HE with a genuine TWR bodykit & twin headlamps conversion, marvellous especially with that very same 2 tone green paintwork & a '666' reg number. He also had a Daimler & Jaguar coupe.

Love the car but then again jaguar is a weak spot of mine, however I can't believe I just saw someone describe the etype as fat and ugly, just choked on my corn flakes!

Stunning cars with a classic and timeless shape.

That TWR model looks aggressive and has a nice, beefy stance.

It's weird they came with a 3 speed auto, even with a 6 litre engine!

wink just over egging to make a point. The launch of the replacement of the EType is one of those fabled times written about by self appointed leading authorities who were never there and recanted by lifelong enthusiasts and specialists who never owned either. As such you get the same old tripe wheeled out whenever the subject crops up.

By the late 70s the old E-Type wasn't what it was. It had evolved into a chunky tourer with big fat bumpers and no sales volume as no one wanted such an old and out of date looking car.

Conversely the XJS was totally of its time, sleek, elegant and even avoided the wedge era.

Coupled with that it always out sold the E-Type and was more profitable.

As stunning as the E-Type is there are too many rose tinted specs flying around and too many people who were never there trying to re write the history books.

I'm amazed the XJS was wrung out into the 90's but for the late 70's it was an epic car and iconic for the 80's.

The dark evil über-Lister with twin blowers was Norfolk's wasnt it? The answer to the question of "how much trouble can it be?" is best put like this...Norf blew the best part of £100k restoring and perfecting his De Thomaso, the Lister though reduced him to crying on his knees and beating himself with a church tower in redemption for his twisted, ruined soul.

That an illuminating enough answer? An über-Lister makes correcting Italian things look cheap.

I suspected as much.

My guess is that you'd be sensible to rip out the electrics and start again with modern systems for starters but you always get the feeling that low volume, after market Engines can be a real pain to complete the development on.

Doesn't appeal at all. I'd have an XJ12 over one of those. Far better looking.

I'd be interested to hear about what mods you have made to your XJS. I've just started doing subtle updates on mine.

Hi all. I used to own a twr xjs but mine was a 1978 model and had the coversion done in 1982 at a cost of £5000.
This included; suspension upgrde, body kit( with vented bonnet), BBS alloys, full stainless exhaust and engine work to take it to 348 bhp. 1st gear was a waste of time in the wet and kick down to 2nd at 50 got a bit twitchy
I had no end of electrical faults, rotten floor, single figure fuel consumption if driven hard etc etc.
But when i was sat in it, it was such a wonderful place to be, comfortable seats, great driving position, sounded fantastic and went like you know what. Would i have another one? probably not, but i have no regrets about owning it, it still brings a smile to my face when i think about it, even writing this i am remembering the fun and the pain of it.

I had a V12 XJS for a year. Funnily enough I ran it alongside a Prodrive Impreza. It was quite a contrast!

Overall the XJS looked lovely and was very smooth. However it was very nose heavy and the auto box was pretty dire when you are away from the motorway. I suspect the 4 litre manual would be a far superior machine for having some fun.

Very true. The E-type went from this:

to this:

Awful, and the XJ-S was just of its time. The twin-blower Lister has always been up there with hypercar-level of sillyness imo, expecting that to be anything other than a vast expense is folly!

It definitely does.

But imagine that as the 2+2 with the caravan shaped top and then you have to think about how an early 60s iconic design would be looking to the eyes of a buyer in the late 1970s. Immensely dated, fattened and uglified.

The problem is that we look back with modern eyes and rose tinted specs.

The original Etype was a sports car but it was morphed into a slush pump, out of date looking GT. The XJS was a GT from the outset and one of the best looking on the market at that time and for quite some time. Few cars of that period are as sleek and elegant.
