IIRC the XJS was originally designed as a drophead but threatened US legislation, virtually banning open cars, caused the late addition of the turret to the design. Same story with the Triunph TR7 I believe. The legislation never made it through, and both cars later came out in drophead form. There was a period back then when there were hardly any open cars produced in the States, including the 'Vette, for the same reason.
