RE: PH Carpool: BMW M5 (E34) Touring
Discussion
There is a thread on M5board where a member (Danish, I think) has done some tests on the ring. He says the cooling effect in negligible. In fact he says the M-Pars keep the brakes the coolest.

An excellent article.
Well done Paul - you have a stunning car!
The E34 M5 was always one of my dream cars, a dream which I realised around 4 years ago.
Purchased an E34 M5 3.6 in Macau Blue. An ex-Jersey car, with low miles.
Currently been off the road, but will be sorted within the next few months to use at my sister's wedding.
Question is: original 17" Throwing Stars (staggered fitment)
OR
A set of Genuine 17" Alpina, with 10j rears (removed from a B12 Alpina)?
10J rear dont fit, I believe they foul the trailing arm. Well done Paul - you have a stunning car!

I had a set of Brock wheels with 10J rears, and they did fit.however, with people in the back, the tyres did rub on the arches.
Didn't the E34 B10 Alpinas have 10J rear wheels?
Out of interest, did the M5 get the same steering box as the lesser E34s, or was it replaced with a rack/pinion or a modified box for better feel and fewer turns L to L?
I only ask as the common or garden 5 has no steering feel what so ever (and lots of positive camber, which doesn't help) and gets pretty slack too, as the miles pile on. I can't imagine BMW giving their best car the same setup?
I've been in a "Got £10K to spend, but don't know what on" predicament for months now, but have considered the E34/E39 M. Just scouting for info

Like all E34's the M5 has the recirculating ball steering box, however the M5 has a faster ratio. Having driven both a 540i and a 3.8 M5, you can look at the M5 as having everything turned to 11. Can't say I noticed a lack of steering feel on the 540i, but saying that most of the cars I've driven have either been old dogs or EPAS cars, yet the M5 certainly 'talks' to you.
ETA: Driving the 540i is nice (though I've only driven an auto and not the 6 speeder) and you can tell it's quick and massively capable, but every single aspect of the M5 was addictive, even at sedate speeds.

If only they did them RHD. Shame. Tried relatively posh estates with big engines, but I would go for something that is special. Merc E class V8's are great but lack the fiz. BMW M cars have the fiz but no real demand to make estate or 4 door models in RHD. Shame. Oh well.
There is 1 RHD about.........E24man said:
There are two E34 M5 Tourings that were converted from lhd to rhd, one in Avus blue and one in purple - the purple one is presently for sale. There were/are also two rhd 525i Tourings that were converted to 3.6 M5 Tourings with a full powertrain transplant.

And the Daytona car is indeed for sale. http://www.barons-auctions.com/details.php?ID=5945
As noted above the two rhd 3.8 M5 Tourings are well known. I went and saw a purple [Edit: it might have been dark blue] 525iT to 3.6 M5 conversion many years ago in Glasgow. It was well done mechanically and had the correct bits and pieces except they had a left a rather faded and tired biege comfort interior in it - I was looking for a minty car so despite driving all the way there from Yorkshire I walked.
The other 3.6 M5 Touring is/was a white [edit: or light green] example which may not even still be around; I certainly haven't heard about it for years. There is also one solitary rhd M5 Touring in the southern hemisphere - a 3.8 again made from a 525iT; he posts sometimes on the M5board.
I have come close to buying three of the four at some stage but each time something else came along; the first time an M635CSi (instead of the Avus 3.8), the second time a minty fresh E34 540i Touring six speed (instead of the purple/biege 3.6),and the third time a stunning E39 B10 V8 Touring (instead of the purple 3.8).

Well, I'm 50% convinced. I've seen the Avus Blue genuine M5 conversion, it was owned for a while by Paul at Infinicar (he used to post a bit on m5board,they were breakers of some interesting cars - website doesn't seem to be active).
And the Daytona car is indeed for sale. http://www.barons-auctions.com/details.php?ID=5945
That's the first time I've come across the 'other' RHD conversion. Interesting that its for sale. And the Daytona car is indeed for sale. http://www.barons-auctions.com/details.php?ID=5945
I'll confess now, I'm the same Paul and still own the Avus Blue one......:-)
