This is so true. I remember when i was a kid of 17 and me and the lads had all just started driving, we were not poor or from poor families, but we all drove what i would now describe as Sheds (in actual fact sub shed if £1k is the benchmark), from memory no one had anything sub 10 years old or without at least some corrosion, most struggled to hit the magic ton without gravity and and a following wind to lend a hand, as most had carbs, there was mandatory tinkering required at regular intervals to keep them running alright.

Lanci Y10, Nova (saloon), Metro, fiesta, 2cv, Suzzy SJ, Uno, Panda... basically cars that never made it much past 15 years before they gave into to rust!

Shed standard is so much higher now!
Very true.
We started out with Fiesta`s (Mk1&2), Metro`s, Renault 5`s etc.
4 wheels and some seats was pretty much your lot. smile

My shed is a 1998 Fiesta zetec, £400 off ebay over a year ago & £220 to insure. I think we put around £20 a week in fuel, it returns over40mpg. The last mot cost me less than £200 including labour. I will fix nothing unless it stops it being drivable.

It's abused, treated like a skip, never serviced although I did top up the oil once, the dog jumps all over it when soaked & covered in mud, its never cleaned, it stinks & I rarely ever lock it. I dump it anywhere I can find a space with no concerns about it getting clouted. My wife hates it & says it embarrasses her. I bloody love it.

As a petrol head who usually keeps my car clean to the point of obsession It feels wonderful to just not give a st about it.
Just a small update as I've had to spend money on it frown
The coil pack died the other day so a quick look on ebay saw one delivered next day for £25, including a set of ht leads.
I have also relented & driven the wife to Asda's vacume so she can clean it out.
This car is becoming a bit of a liability! biggrin

I thought 'proper' man maths was like convincing yourself that you can afford to buy and maintain an Aston Martin Vantage when you only earn £18k a year! wink

both sheds together biggrin

I love not worrying about them, getting into a panic about car park dinks, or having to give way to morons in expensive cars!!

Outta my way, shed comming through!! laugh

Excellent shine, what did you use? or did the previous owner look after it well?

The shed is the way forward.

But check this out for really crooked dumb man-maths.......I drive a sheddy MG ZS 180 (but I'm looking to switch to something comfy and slow) because I want to protect my pride and joy from salt etc (really CBA to weld it up in the future!)
By my P&J is only worth £1-£1.5k on a good day!

Paint was ok, but very dull when i got it.

I just used halfords brand car wash, Autoglym resin polish, and finished it off with turtle wax hard shell original polish

turned out pretty well considering it was my first time properly forcing a car to be shiny! biggrin

Even at a grand i'd still take a 6 cylinder BMW or Audi.

My Shed is a 1995 Pug 106, 1.5 diesel, 70k miles. I bought it as a short term car 3 years ago for £250. Since then, it's only needed a brake hose, rear exhaust to get through MOT's. Stuck on a set of Ebay front discs and pads for £40 last year and the radius arm bearings have siezed up as I'd been using the bike for work. Sourced a 4 stud non ABS rear beam axle for £100 so should be back in business soon.
50-55mpg is normal. Regular oil changes and fitting quality glow plugs keeps the wee Pug running sweet. It's definately got the 'Inverted Snob' factor for me. It's crammed full of f***-all, keep-fit windows, you can only operate the air-con if you have a passenger to open the other window, the heated rear window doesn't work, which isn't a problem in winter as I always wear gloves when pushing a car, sunroof is siliconed shut.
Looking forward to getting it back on the road.

Sheds rule!

I loved this article, like Dave I own a few boys toys but can't help picking up sheds

The best shed I bought was on a trip to the scrap yard looking for a battery, ended up driving home in a Metro automatic for £50 including a spare battery! I used it for six months and still got £75 for it.

I''m lucky enough today to own 20+ cars but I recently acquired a Mercedes A Class (£1300) for use as a Pub car, tip truck and "I'm poor don't over charge me vehicle". It's saved me hundreds at the builders yard compared to turning up in my Overfinch smile

On a more serious note the Sheds have definitely helped keep my two young boys grounded, I used to pick them up from school in all sorts of exotica but the look on their faces when it's one of my sheds is brilliant, the quotes have included " what is that dad", "this thing stinks" and the best one "dad there are little plants growing in the car".

Only do 4000 miles a year, got all sorts of cars but love my Sheds smile

I'm seriously considering getting into shedding next winter after the MR2 has been a complete pain in the arse in the cold.

Main concern is insurance, could I begin a policy on the MR2, swap the cover to the shed for the winter and then back again to the MR2 in the spring without much hassle? Insuring both cars simultaneously is most likely not cost effective due to my age.

This is my first year of shedding, but when I swapped the insurance from my VX220 to Escort GTI I got £125 back. I'm hoping that when I switch back in the spring it will only cost £90ish. Shouldn't be too much hassle swapping cars on the policy and you might save a couple of quid.

Top marks. I was given a 406 estate when my mate emigrated to Aus last year. Told me it used a bit of water but had a years MOT and I put some rent on it. Wow talk about stress free motoring. Never cleaned or valeted so kids can do what they like in it . Park it anywhere with no worries about supermarket dings or having it nicked, drives through the smallest gaps, cheap insurance, load it up with anything for the tip run without worrying about the upholstery and its as comfy as any car available today. Okay the handling isn't up to much and not much street cred but I can smile to myself that the only running costs are fuel, time to top it up with water and I just love the zero depreciation.

Shedding is the ultimate, I recently bought an Immaculate Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, and quite frankly I don't like it much, it's a fine car I just haven't ever 'clicked' with it. Anyway I put it up for sale and someone scrapes it in Tesco. So now I either have to knock that off the price or get it re painted, it's so frustrating!

If it had been my Legacy, I couldn't care one bit! So when it does sell i'm just buying an old Forester Turbo which I'll keep mechanically perfect but not so much the body, it's the 2nd time in a year my 'good' cars have been hit with no one around and it's just plain annoying.

Shedding is great, I remember buying an Escort TD at an auction a few years ago as I had nothing to get to wrk with for a few days, £275 with a years mot, and the crafty dealer had removed the tax disc

Cue a trip to DVLA local office explaining the scenario and I was issued with a replacement disc for 4 months iirc, never heard anything about it again

I tortured that car, it was an absolute heap, however I ran it for a few months, washed it once, and sold it for £400 to a lad that lived along the street from the FIL. He had it for about 18months iirc

Love the tint Pug put on the windows, really reminds me of the old 505's etc. Is it a TD? If so have you had a play with the turbo, does it go well? Always fancied one.
