The fact that 3 out of 4 in the R2R team just like others on the Dakar failed during the event is testament to the difficulty of it. It isn't just a carnival parade thru town, where you smile and wave like so many motorsport events.

Everyone here knows that even if you were given the same tools -Purpose built Bowler wildcat, support discovery and two 8x8 trucks in any other race or event you would be surprised if anything failed?
Even the support crew don't have it easy, they also had a disco damaged in the crash and they abandoned the 2 Army spec 8x8 trucks halfway thru.
This is well worth the £5 donation

...Such a pity the TV coverage by Eurosport was so seriously rubbish. Bumped hour by hour by snooker/tennis etc.
Indeed. When you have the commentator apologising in advance for the shoddy timing you know you have a problem.

The other issue is that now the event is in South America you have the time zones working against you. When the teatime show aired the leading cars had barely crossed the finish line and some of the back markers hadn't even started the stage.

Also the top drivers went off and stayed in hotels so they weren't in the bivouac to be interviewed for the later show.

Perhaps Eurosport need to switch to a 'yesterday from the Dakar' format for one of the two broadcast slots and run 24hrs behind the action but then be able to have more extensive coverage once all the crews and footage are in, especially as anyone who is interested can lookup the current results on dakar.com so we don't need the tv show for that info.

Fantastic. Gutted I missed following them, epsecially after their Top Gear was re-run recently. Retrospective donation dutifully made!

I followed their progress stage by stage, hour by hour as I'm an old friend of Matt's and it really was a truly epic journey through the toughest of terrain. Not only that, but fait threw them the cruelest of blows on times with team members being involved in serious accidents which resulted in third party fatalities. I'm in awe of what they have achieved and would urge anyone who hasn't already donated, to do so as it's a fantastic cause for truly worthy people.

These lads are awesome...as is their achievement.

Apologies for being a pedant...but the winning car was actually a Bowler...pretty sure the others were Qt's, but I do know 'Joy' was one of Drew's.

I assisted the R2R team on their 1st foray into the desert on the Tuareg Rally in Spain & Morocco, back in March last year. They're an amazing bunch of guys and some really good mates too. I'm looking forward to catching up with them very soon.

On the subject of the cars, yes they are a mixture of QT & Bowler built cars, but (and this is purely my own theory) I can only assume they were all refered to as Bowlers because of the sponsorship tie-in with Land Rover, who in turn have a major agreement with Bowler Motorsport. PR puff i think is the term.
