Don't forget Audi came out with a big V8 engined flagship 25 years ago.
As did Lancia and I assume several others ;-phavoc said:
I would say Messrs Rolls and Royce were the first, but chances are some PH beard will come back and say it was some long-forgotten brand...
You called?Lots messed around with the idea (including RR) but the first mass produced V8 was by Cadillac - not too obscure, surely?
That covered the premium end until V8 goodness was democratised by Ford.
ETA - The Caddy V8 "flagship" was 99 years ago BTW
Not Sure Audi started this blueprint....
Maserati were one of the first on the downsized high specific output V6 and V8 (biturbo/90's QP). Ghibli Cup being highest specific output/litre car on the planet (at the time). All of this was to evade the higher rate of car tax in Italy. Granted they were not 4 wheel drive but were twin 'turbo'ing' well ahead of the competition. Two smaller turbos as opposed to one barn door sized piece to try and eliminate lag.
I personally don't think that Maserati get enough credit for the engineering on the bi-turbo engine (with no budget). So I would credit Maserati with the understated Luxo-sportsbarge four door small capacity twin turbo V6/V8 model and not Audi...just my thoughts. A fully lit QP V8 Evo was always a giggle in the damp.

I have one, and totally love it.
Lets iron out a few previous posts.
- Front discs: £500
- Rear discs: £400
- Pads (F&R): £200
- Tyres £200+ each
- Gearboxes: Yes they have a tendancy to go bang (around £5k to fix/replace) but more and more people are servicing them which keeps them going longer it seems.
- DRC suspension: Many, many, many people have replaced the DRC with coilovers already, so unless you wanna stay OE then replace with a cheaper alternative. Not many Audi garages setup DRC properly, but more specialists now can re-pressurise.
- 10mpg? Only if you drive like a total mentalist. Mine averages 21mpg.
- Did anyone mention a remap yet? £500+ remap gets you approximately 50bhp more and 175+ lbs/ft!.

Strange as it may seem, an RS6 that was the first car that showed me what the difference between a quick car and a fast one was.
I was out on a gentle Sunday morning drive with some fellow PHers in my MR2 - by no means a slow car - and by coincidence followed an RS6 around a corner that preceded a clear and open straight. As befitted the situation and entirely within applicable traffic regulations, I clogged it, in 2nd, into 3rd, etc. The RS6 - not a supercar, not a sportscar, a big family bus - simply walked away from me with no effort whatsoever

I loved my RS6 Avant too ...a quick remap and you have an easy 500bhp 4 x 4 commuter wagon
The best support vehicle for those runs to LeMans each year, laden with camping equipment, cruising with supercars no bother
But the running costs....well. Over a 35K mile period they were twice that of an Aston Vantage over 35K miles
you just cant have a 1.8ton 500bhp estate car and the performance of a sportscar, without getting the costs too
mostly driven by low volume consumable parts only available at extortionate prices, and of course it eats them
I would have another one tomorrow if I didnt need to do 20k+ motorway miles a year......

Using a car from 28-29 years ago where the actual car in the image was never publicly for sale as an example isn't totally the best way to voice your opinion..Particularly when there is no true successur to that car for sale.
The only Audi road since that 90's that has Character in my "opinion" is the RS2.
All audis look the same, Far more so than any other brand.
The design department consists of a magnifying glass and an A4 as well as some silver mirror cars and an inverted telescope to make the A4 look smaller......
