Using a car from 28-29 years ago where the actual car in the image was never publicly for sale as an example isn't totally the best way to voice your opinion..
Particularly when there is no true successur to that car for sale.

The only Audi road since that 90's that has Character in my "opinion" is the RS2.
All audis look the same, Far more so than any other brand.
The design department consists of a magnifying glass and an A4 as well as some silver mirror cars and an inverted telescope to make the A4 look smaller...... biggrin
He didn't say a specific Audi, he just said Audi. Therefore my example is as valid is his opinion.

Amazing how the RS6 devides opinions, more so for those who like to dislike Audis 'just because'.

I always notice especially on this forum when a "won the lottery what car?" thread appears you can guarantee 5 out of 6 posters will include an RS6 avant on there.

My first experience of an RS6 made a lasting impression and a massive want for one, pulled on to a motorway in my decently fettled with Audi TT, at the time was running about 350 BHP, behind me was a PH'er (Paul?) with a stage 2 RS6, within seconds of pulling on the motorway it had passed me and disappeared. Awesome car, and not just quick, but fast.

"Or occasional glimpses of corporate arrogance, such as that expressed by boss Rupert Stadler when the matter of the global recession was raised and he said "we discussed it and decided not to participate." That'll be that famous German humour in action then."

I dont think this was meant as a joke. Just a factual statement. I'm pretty sure they did discuss it, in detail, and came up with a strategy to ensure that Audi would prosper during a global recession. And it worked.

Have always thought an RS6 Avant would be my ultimate daily driver, the combination of huge power in a subtle(ish) estate car with 4wd is a great formula. Whilst they are often criticised for not being the sharpest handlers, it really doesnt matter as most who can afford a new RS6 will likely have something that 'handles' in the garage for weekends.

I hate Audi's as they are driven by those pushy types, the telly told me so it must be right...

Honestly the C5 RS6 redefined fast avant/estates. The B5 I had was awesome especially in remapped form but the standard plus RS6 was just manic.

The major problem with these cars is the running costs and reliability issues (DRC and Gearbox) and if you run one now (before heading to the classifieds) make sure the DRC has been replaced with aftermarket Billsteins and that the gearbox has been serviced properly.

Sub £10K to buy. Nobody said what it would cost to keep the thing running.
I have a twenty year old, 18mpg, TWR tuned Jaguar. Less than 300 were made back then and finished in a separate factory, so nowhere stocks the XJR specific parts for it. A more-or-less production (ten years ago) Audi shouldn't be much more of an issue! smile

I truely, honestly and completely fail to see the appeal. They just have all the character of a pebble.

To further stoke the fires, here's the RS246 buyers guide. These seem like fragile cars but I suppose of you can afford it there's little to beat it.

Jesus, talk about quote of the day (from the above link)

"I bought the car for £29.5k four years ago and having done over 64,000 miles it's taken another £31,816 to keep the car on the road! Albeit the various warranty companies have paid some of that."

Sod. That.

Out of interest, what was the ownership like for the RS2. Fun, running cost, reliability etc

I'd take that as an extreme case and one that no doubt reverberates around the forums for years to come, putting off future owners in the process.

What's wonderful is that we're all different! You honestly couldn't pay me to be seen in a Jag. I'd die of embarrassment with the horror of it and the awful arriviste/car dealer/golf club/vulgar retired middle management associations!

From the spreadsheet the guy has it's really not. A few things stand out though such as £3400 for a replacement steering rack, £2000 for a blocked gearbox valve, £2400 for a gearbox refurb. The rest is consumables and regular stuff. Shocking.

I've been running a C5 RS6 Avant for nearly 7 years now... non-resonated Milltek exhaust, sports cats, 550bhp'ish and circa 670 ft/lbs of torque. All done by MRC Tuning.

Running at full revs whilst overtaking on a motorway it was described by another driver (in a TVR!) as like having a fly-past from a monstrous WWII fighter plane.

I keep meaning to sell it, but 55k miles later it still brings an enormous grin every time it starts, let alone when you kick it down a couple of gears! biggrin

Running costs are not for those with shallow pockets in the event something goes bang, however if treated properly and via a trustworthy and knowledgable indy they are affordable.

There's not many good ones left, so if you are so inclined and have an itch to scratch - just do it!thumbup

It was enjoyable but I spent 3K per year over 15K miles keeping the RS2 going.....

I've always loved cars, liked fast cars, especially ones that are that bit different. I've been in a few quick ones over the years, probably the nicest, not the quickest, was a Fiat Dino Ferrari Spyder, just such a lovely noise.

In spite of all the cars, I'd never ever sat in any Audi until my car mad son bought one.
He does his research to the 'nth degree.
Me? I just look and buy. At his age I had a 998 Imp!

He comes home with this modded 2.7 V6 bi-turbo S4. Got a suitable number plate for a couple hundred quid from DVLA.
Then 'Come out for a ride Dad'. 'Heated leather Recaros and comfy, and oh yeah, it's bloody fast!'

Everyone who gets (got*) in it utters the same 2 words in very quick succession as it accelerates.

yikes F.......g H... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you wanted a ridiculously fast car for not lots of money this would have been it.
Even featured in an Audi mag.

  • he's sold it now, after about 2 years and quite a lot of fuel!
Personally, I'm glad it's gone. There's fast, and there's stupid fast.

Only car I've ever been surprised by the rev-limiter in...as in "Nail it, what's that sound, oh sh't the rev-limiter already?!?"

As you say, loony-fast, but otherwise just an estate car...horses for courses though!
