Those RS cars, they're not discreet, are they? In fact, they're screamingly vulgar. A 200 quattro turbo was discreet.

Once upon a time the Audi qualities were interesting, intelligent and understood by a knowing few. Quattro. 5 cylinders. Pro-con-ten. Plain. Most people thought they were rubbish. Now their qualities are obvious, unsophisticated and adored by the dumb herd. Flash. Tax efficient. Flash. Audis were more desirable when they preferred BMWs.

The Avant CD5E was rather special.

Th B1 Audi 80 GT & E was a great alternative to the 2002's

I've always loved cars, liked fast cars, especially ones that are that bit different. I've been in a few quick ones over the years, probably the nicest, not the quickest, was a Fiat Dino Ferrari Spyder, just such a lovely noise.

In spite of all the cars, I'd never ever sat in any Audi until my car mad son bought one.
He does his research to the 'nth degree.
Me? I just look and buy. At his age I had a 998 Imp!

He comes home with this modded 2.7 V6 bi-turbo S4. Got a suitable number plate for a couple hundred quid from DVLA.
Then 'Come out for a ride Dad'. 'Heated leather Recaros and comfy, and oh yeah, it's bloody fast!'

Everyone who gets (got*) in it utters the same 2 words in very quick succession as it accelerates.

yikes F.......g H... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you wanted a ridiculously fast car for not lots of money this would have been it.
Even featured in an Audi mag.

  • he's sold it now, after about 2 years and quite a lot of fuel!
Personally, I'm glad it's gone. There's fast, and there's stupid fast.

Only car I've ever been surprised by the rev-limiter in...as in "Nail it, what's that sound, oh sh't the rev-limiter already?!?"

As you say, loony-fast, but otherwise just an estate car...horses for courses though!
biggrin

I have so much love for my B5 S4 cloud9

(Repost, but relevant)

In the 1980s the Audi Quattro spat flames in the face of its challengers and tore holes of fire through the dark forests of Wales in the RAC rally. They were driven by virile Vikings, some of whom really were called Stig, who drove like a Berserker on a wild stag night, then chatted calmly with the press as if they were actually one of the nice blokes from ABBA. They were quietly spoken rock stars who gave 100% because they weren’t stupid enough to think that 110% existed and never once did they complain about a curious numbness and lack of connection in the steering of their all-conquering quattros.

and they made these too.

For me, the answer is a B5 RS4.
It may be expensive to run, but its a damn sight cheaper to run than an RS6!

Comparing the two...

RS4 pros:
Rarer
Better looking (The RS4 has no different arches to an A6)
Manual box
No DRC worries
No auto box/torque converter worries
Handling

RS4 Cons:
Smaller
Not V8 (personally, I prefer the V6 to V8, so its a pro for me!)

Part of me would love an RS6, but aside from loving the RS4 more, the main reason is not wanting an auto box.
Yes, I prefer the sound of a V6 to V8, but hearing an RS6 idling with a Milltek fitted even converts me!

Also, without wanting to start the tedious Audi/handling debate, the RS4 corners better too.
Remember, the RS6 is a big heavy barge, and all the owners Ive spoken to say its really not much good at fast cornering and mainly a proper motorway/autobahn mile muncher.

It does'nt take much to get the RS4 nudging 500bhp either

I have owned loads of Audis, some great, some like the B6 S4 absolute pigs!!

But generally I love them, however, the owners are the most insular and ignorant I have ever met, they are so blinkered it is cringeworthy.

Handful of guys on the Audi forums are great, but in general most of them ruin the ownership experience, you just can't have banter like you do on the BMW forums, or Mercedes forums etc. Just too damned defensive all the time. Shame.

Just look at the couple of absolute twonks on the TT forum, joining other forums to tell the owners 'The TT-RS is the fastest car on the planet' type thing.
Get a grip!!
Problem with most Audi owners is they have never really tried much else, and they genuinely don't realise their cars are OK, but they are not the last coming.

Good post dj - pretty much agree with all this as had both B5 RS4 and RS6 except:

a) preferred the paddle shift box on the RS6 - made for faster overtaking
b) both cars had great looks in their own right

Have to say though that the RS6 was probably the BEST car I have ever owned from pure grin-factor when driving at any speed...and to give an idea of accelleration - y'all know the bit in Star Trek as it engages warp factor drive and the horizon passes you by - that was the RS6 - nothing came close. Even made my test drive in an M6 feel gutless...

Touche. I'm pleased to say I make a shed load of money - I just choose to waste it on aeroplanes. There is no Audi longing within me, I assure you.

bit off topic-ish but I find it odd that anyone who says that audis look boring or they don't like them are instantly derided as being moronic sheep.

Not everyone will like everything. I recently had the choice of an RS4 or an Evo 9. Took them both for a drive (and an heavily modded r-33 gtr) and both of the other cars felt fat, boring and a bit slow compared to the Evo. If I hadn't driven all of these cars back to back then the skyline and the RS4 would have seemed like rocket ships.

RS4 - Comfy and quick like a pair of lovely slippers
R33 - Heavy uncomfortable like a pair of big old working boots
Evo - Fast and nimble and not too bad a ride like a pair of nice trainers.

I also found that I got stared at looooads in the skyline, not at all in the RS4 and the Evo just seems to excite young kids (hopefully inspiring some young PHers).

I like the way audis look and they are lovely to drive (mrs has an A3 TDi).

What I don't like is the way they dress their diesels up like performance cars which somehow seems to make some of their drivers think that they actually are in performance cars.

Don't bash audis, bash some of the idiots who drive them (and the idiots driving everything else)

Not sure which forums you've been on, but www.audisrs.com and www.audiaddict.net are both full of friendly people that all love a good laugh and a bit of banter smile

I have one, and totally love it.

Lets iron out a few previous posts.
- Front discs: £500
- Rear discs: £400
- Pads (F&R): £200
- Tyres £200+ each
- Gearboxes: Yes they have a tendancy to go bang (around £5k to fix/replace) but more and more people are servicing them which keeps them going longer it seems.
- DRC suspension: Many, many, many people have replaced the DRC with coilovers already, so unless you wanna stay OE then replace with a cheaper alternative. Not many Audi garages setup DRC properly, but more specialists now can re-pressurise.
- 10mpg? Only if you drive like a total mentalist. Mine averages 21mpg.
- Did anyone mention a remap yet? £500+ remap gets you approximately 50bhp more and 175+ lbs/ft!.

Check out the RS246 forum for more owners and helpful buying tips.
So with coilovers already fitted the big stand out bork cost would be the gearbox? Wouldn’t an aftermarket warranty like warranty direct cover this? If so the man maths could stack up.

Have always wanted an RS6, despite hating automatics and carbon-fibre interior trim, since reading a review for the RS6+ in CAR and the article pointing out that it was the car Osama Bin Laden should drive. I believe they used them as pace or perhaps safety cars for the V8 Supercars (correct me if I'm wrong) for a few years too. And I first saw an RS6, in Grey, parked outside Yering Station the the Yarra Valley (and if you know the place you'll appreciate what a perfect car it is for that place) and just thinking one day I would have one of those.

Probably not. My eyes are open and I do my research. Yes, like most people on here, I fall in love with cars (although I'll admit probably the old RS4 more than the 6) and want to own them regardless of the consequences. Wanting to own one regardless and actually doing it are two different things. I'd wanted the Jag since I can remember, but I still did months of research before I took the plunge. I just wouldn't hand over my cash until I'd at least got an idea of the risks involved.

Either way it's a bit of a moot point as it's not practical for me to get a second car at the moment and I'm not parting with the Jag, no matter how useless in the snow (and slow) it is in comparison!

Warranty companies are there to make money, not provide charity.
First of all, you might not be able to take on a warranty on a car that age and/or milleage.
Second, you have to look at the exclusion list very, very carefully and then go over it with a microscope.

In the end it all goes down to firing up web browser and looking through aftermarket warranties T&Cs.

For the criteria you have to satisfy and the never ending tales of warranty companies been reluctant to pay out, it may be better to put the money aside for a warranty into a slush fund.

I currently do this in combination with the AA recovery and parts replacement/labour policy which helps out come alternator failure time etc etc
