That was what Audis were all about - in 1984. When they were cool and leftfield and interesting.
This is what springs to mind in 2013:
I see you have marked every single Audi as 1 out of 10, from A1 to A8. Jeremy Clarkson Clones such as yourself are boring, why not try to establish an opinion of your own! I understand you may not like the styling but to grade every Audi with 1 out of 10 shows there is a deep seated hatred in you. Did your girlfriend leave you for an old fella with a 80 tdi? This is what springs to mind in 2013:
I have to thank threads like this and the people who tirelessly warn people about the RS6 running costs.
It means I can pick up a virtual supercar in an estate body for buttons. With the money saved on that huge chunk of metal I can keep it running well.
Rough man maths over the next 3 years factoring in depreciation, servicing, fuel for 8K miles a year and a bit of luck in the mix will mean I'm not that worse off than a friend who has bought a brand new diesel Countryman. I know which one I'd rather be rocking around in.
It does like a bit of a drink, but at 22mpg it's not much worse than a friends V6 GTV. But the difference in performance is in another league.
The costs people quote for parts and servicing are high because they probably like to tell people how much their car has cost them. It's like a badge of honour who can spend the most and a way of asking top dollar for their car come sale time. It's probably why I keep the Audi forums at a bit of a distance to be honest.
Some of the parts are expensive, but a lot of the parts do not need to be from Audi and costs can be kept under control by doing your research properly. If I couldn't wield a spanner and relied on the dealerships/specialists for everything then yes I'd keep my distance too.

Yowzer! Am I being stalked? I'm no fan of Jeremy Clarkson but I think you might have an Audi...Mark-C said:

You still couldn't pay me enough to be seen in an Audi.
I truely, honestly and completely fail to see the appeal. They just have all the character of a pebble.

Wait one cotton-picking minute.

In this company, only Jaguar's XFR dares to do it even a bit differently, and even then all-wheel drive is coming to that range too.
We knew that 4WD XF's and XJ's were coming lower down the range, but are there firm plans to make a 4WD XFR? While Dan's article is interesting, that would be significant news that would interest me far more.Ved said:

Always wanted an RS6, and in this weather it makes the Jag seem just a little silly. Sub £10k, you say?..
A supermodel is not a cheap date...I was looking at RS6 last years and after making some research decided to abandon the idea.
Too many problems with the car that are too expensive to fix.
I'm thinking B6/B7 S4 instead.
I've always loved cars, liked fast cars, especially ones that are that bit different. I've been in a few quick ones over the years, probably the nicest, not the quickest, was a Fiat Dino Ferrari Spyder, just such a lovely noise.
In spite of all the cars, I'd never ever sat in any Audi until my car mad son bought one.
He does his research to the 'nth degree.
Me? I just look and buy. At his age I had a 998 Imp!
He comes home with this modded 2.7 V6 bi-turbo S4. Got a suitable number plate for a couple hundred quid from DVLA.
Then 'Come out for a ride Dad'. 'Heated leather Recaros and comfy, and oh yeah, it's bloody fast!'
Everyone who gets (got*) in it utters the same 2 words in very quick succession as it accelerates.
F.......g H... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you wanted a ridiculously fast car for not lots of money this would have been it.
Even featured in an Audi mag.

- he's sold it now, after about 2 years and quite a lot of fuel!
I remember a few years ago being on a dual carriage way, the speed limit drops to 40 mph as there’s a big kink in it, soon after it goes back up to national again. I was in my car (Fiat Coupe 20VT) I’d come out of the kink in second gear doing about 25mph, I was just about to throw down the hammer, next thing I know this Grey C5 RS6 Avant has come along out of nowhere and driven off into the sunset, never saw it again
I’d always wanted one, this thing made me look like I was stationary! One day I’d like to take the plunge.

I was very tempted to get one of these rather than my 328i, and sometimes I wonder, the effortless power to be had from that engine is quite something.

I certainly enjoyed my '98 S8 for 5 years. The PO had ticked every extra conceivable. It had depreciated £47k in 2 years and 20k miles when I got it.
I averaged 14mpg but I was an enthusiastic driver. Yes the steering had very little feel compared to the Scooby Turbo and Caterham I also owned at the time. Yes the gearbox gave up the ghost - but that was after towing a trailer with my brother's Alfa Spider on and really not being sympathetic with my acceleration. I thanked god for the extended warranty at £2k pa.
But it was an amazing car. Felt like it was carved out of granite. Incredibly comfortable, adequately quick and in its element driving down to Tuscany loaded up with wife, kids and stuff cruising at 130mph.
I also loved the Q car look. Very few people had any idea what an S8 was.
Sold it when I moved to Vancouver. I still hanker but they are incredibly rare in Canada and still pretty pricey. Sadly there are no RS Avants in Canada. All saloons.

Agreed... My XFR has been tucked up in the garage for the last week as it is useless in this weather.Nobby77 said:
I have one, and totally love it.
Lets iron out a few previous posts.
- Front discs: £500
- Rear discs: £400
- Pads (F&R): £200
- Tyres £200+ each
- Gearboxes: Yes they have a tendancy to go bang (around £5k to fix/replace) but more and more people are servicing them which keeps them going longer it seems.
- DRC suspension: Many, many, many people have replaced the DRC with coilovers already, so unless you wanna stay OE then replace with a cheaper alternative. Not many Audi garages setup DRC properly, but more specialists now can re-pressurise.
- 10mpg? Only if you drive like a total mentalist. Mine averages 21mpg.
- Did anyone mention a remap yet? £500+ remap gets you approximately 50bhp more and 175+ lbs/ft!.

Ah top knowledge. There is a certain "have you got the cherries?" about the RS6. Great alrounder (as is the "Ronin" S8 which a neighbour enjoys). Makes sense the engine is more efficient than expected, unless you give it the beans. Mind you, an RS6 will probably get you the pleasure of regular public transport usage if you keep doing that on the Queen's highway.Lets iron out a few previous posts.
