In which case it's a Volvo-racecar sourced 2.5 V6 which they've upped to just under 800hp (presumably using a turbo the size of a medium sized dog)!?!?

It cool as fk as was, reputedly, up-for-sale for around one-and-a-half Mark Hales engine rebuilds smile
I do love what people do to Volvo's that others don't in Bmw's/Mercs etc. Volvo owners are nuts

I wish they would bring out some luke warm polestar models to go against the 335/S4. Think they would stand a better chance of sales. I'm sure they could sprinkle a bit of their magic of the D5 to make a good 335d/3.0 Bi-turbo rival as well. I would like for Volvo to succeed. Loved watching them in the BTCC when growing up.

The S60 Polestar is £200k because it's handbuilt. Productionise it and you could easily bring it down to £60k.

I agree that there's a market for non-German performance cars, and this will only grow as the "default" choice becomes ever-more German. Non-German manufacturers with a good product will see big jumps in sales numbers as people move away from the herd. You've only got to see the number of Jaguars and Lexuses on the roads to understand this.

And Volvos have often been reasonably quick - you've just needed to be prepared to manage the wallowy handling.

Chris you say the turbo does nothing until 3500 rpm yet a rolling start helps the volvo, did you try the drag race without a rolling start.Think they only made 6 as thats all they could sell, would be the merc for me ,its a quarter of the price

yes
Limited production run will always produce big numbers. As it is, it's more exclusive than a Huayra.

Though the bits he shows are quite pricey parts. A 60k car won't be packing hi-end Ohlins.

True, still looked good and each to their own. Now everyone is chatting about the turbo, I'm intrigued to find out which one it's running...

This.

The only reason the Volvo can match the C63 in this situation is because the runway was covered in snow, masking the ill effects of the Haldex 4wd system. Try taking a 500Hp Volvo around a bend in the dry when the Haldex is shifting (only?) 50% of the power to the rear in huge, agricultural lumps, meaning that holding any sort of drift is pretty much impossible. Also, the production cars are unlikely to have £15Ks worth of Ohlins helping it get round a bend. Even my V50 T5 AWD is fun in the snow, but show it a dry piece of tarmac and the handling is laughable.

The price is irrelevant, really: It's a concept.
Not really.

"Normally these things are concept cars, but Polestar is selling a tiny batch"
Ok, so "concept" isn't quite accurate but it's an extremely limited production run. To compare the price of the Polestar S60 with what are effectively mass-produced performance cars is irrelevant, IMO. You'd assume that, if it did make production (and I mean production on the same/similar level to the proposed competition), that the price would be significantly less. Hopefully...

Yes. 3.0 inline 6, turbocharged. Chris mentions it's a v6 in the video - it's not (unless we're counting a zero degree vee angle!)

The only thing separating it from a 2011+ BMW 335i in conceptual layout is that it's transverse in the S60 whereas BMW install theirs north-south.

Oui. Pretty sure it's a straight not a V.

Great car. I had almost forgot Volvo existed in the last five years.

Jay Leno had one in his garage a while ago the guy from Polestar described the colour as Swedish Racing Green hehe

So what would be the best caravan to put with it? A marauder would seem to capture the essence of the car

Chaps, you can already get something similar to this from Volvo. If the Polestar can be likened to an RS4, then the S4 would be that standard T6 model...

3.0 straight 6 turbo, >300bhp & AWD, reasonable price too...

Volvo also make a 750bhp engined vehicle with a turbocharged straight 6 engine.

The (16.1 litre) engine alone is 1.3 tons: http://www.volvotrucks.com/trucks/uk-market/en-gb/...

(Yes, yes, I know volvo cars are owned by Geely and volvo trucks aren't the same company any more)

Car sounds epic and looks brilliant. Apart from the garish blue paint, it's pretty subtle in terms of it's appearance. Interior looks like a pleasant place to be as well, and it's a saloon so it's got to be fairly practical still.

I'm quite fond of underdogs anyway, and I'm getting bored of what this sector of the market is currently offering - German/V8/Auto; the fact that this doesn't match any of those, especially the fact that it has a proper manual gear box really gets me excited.

Volvo certainly need to get the price down though, but as Harris said, if Volvo manage to so, without compromising too much on the engineering or the look, then I think they'll be on to a winner.

It's about time Volvo got cool again right...?

If Volvo were cool would they still have that quirky appeal?

A lot of owners like them partly because they AREN'T "Cool" like a German brand...
