The ISF, XFR and now this, all very very capable outsiders to the super saloon small and large crown. It keeps BMW and Mercedes on their toes pushing for more innovation and development, it can only be a good thing.
We need to keep the super saloon alive, I'm worrying that ISF and xfr sales figures are going to constrict budgets on these cars in the future, especially in the case of the xfr which is phenomenal. Time will tell how long we see developments from these other manufacturers in a comparatively small uk market.
I'm not just talking about shelving them, I'm talking about real innovation and technology instead of being stuck with the same baseline configuration for years to come. Budgets are spent on hybrid alternative fuel innovation which is already hitting production lines for most manufacturers. Makes me sad for the future or real big engined evolution.

Must be a psychological weakness but I have a thing about mad Scandinavians -on one hand I want one of these! Had an S60R for a few years but had to give it up, but also a Subaru Forester 2.5 as well after that, and to be honest I'd probably go for the Forester again - after all, I don't think the Volvo would be much good in 6" of mud. The s60 certainly wasn't.

In which case it's a Volvo-racecar sourced 2.5 V6 which they've upped to just under 800hp (presumably using a turbo the size of a medium sized dog)!?!?

Owning a V50 Polestar I can say the extra performance is a big improvement over the std. More importantly most people just think its a std v50 in a slightly bright red colour.
Not much good in snow with 18 inch, 45 profile tires however.
If they are the right price they will sell as ergonomics are very good and sometimes you just get bored with BMWs and Mercs.

What this car would do is draw more late 30ish men to the brand. Volvo would be very smart to put this into production. Volvo S60 buyers have a higher income and education than BMW 3 buyers, and skew more towards women than men like the 3 does. Source: Forbes. If Volvo made this more "masculine" version of the 60, there is probably no doubt they'd scoop quite a number of the wealthier and smarter men who were thinking of buying an M3, but really like the idea of not following the herd with their choice of performance sedan and want something a little special, and don't want to be associated with quite a number of M3 drivers. Convincing AMG C63 buyers to switch will probably prove more difficult, but not impossible.
On another note, how is it that one car manufacturer can build a great sounding engine with a turbo, while the turbo on another manufacturer's car makes it sound like a vacuum cleaner?

Good for Volvo. Proper Manual box, V6 turbo, no sea of black in zee cabin, great looking car.
When was Merc actaully made a really good looking car? It will also be cheaper that zee Germans if they made them in volume and in that guise much faster. Volvo's are usually pretty reliable and understated. What is not to like?

Afraid the idea of a massive turbo doesn't do it for me - seems a bit of a poor man's way of extracting more power from an engine. Perhaps they should have used a supercharger or sequential turbo setup or simply the V8 from the XC90 as Noble has done.
Either way, thumbs up for actually doing it.

My old man had an old T5 Estate years ago with a CB ariel on the roof.
Traffic would just melt out of the way on the motorway thinking he was CID.
I still remember as a kid being in the back and asking him to boot it. Even at motorway speeds and with a car-full, the acceleration could pin you in the seat.
Epic car. Since that time I haven't seen a single Volvo that is even vaguely interesting to me.
Hopefully if they get this Polestar thing right they might get back to making cars that are actually desirable to people other than accountants and those of a certain religious persuasion!

That's odd. I have a 2012 C350. Not terribly impressive in the snow. I'm surprised that yours was as you describe given its no doubt stiffer set up and wider probably more 'dry tarmac' orientated tyres.Www.rjmghome.blogspot.com

Does sound very much better than I though it would even though the 63 sounds miles better, (admittedly no turbo). I don't get the comparison though. Why not use an Audi?
I'm more surprised that Harris described the 63 as the best small saloon on the market. Has the M3 officially lost its crown?
