RE: BMW and Toyota buddy up
Discussion
Both companies are talking about post fuel cell production, let us hope that they use hydrogen . Unlike most car manufacturers who have rushed headlong into the very short sighted and even more expensive electric car solution (a solution wich even with government bribes- sorry i mean inducements)wich is becoming one of the biggest farces ever made by the motor industry, some have been clever enought to realize that as 2/3 of the earths surface is water, then hydrogen would have an unlimited suply of raw materials with wich to carry on making cars that deserve to be on the road, unlike some that should be used in leggo land as a kiddies ride, at least you can refuel a hydrogen powered car in a few minutes and travel 300?miles rather than start to top up your electric car when you go to bed and hope that there is enough charge in it next day to get you to work.
The car pictured in this article looks great, wouldnt it be nice if you could buy one and go for a drive in it not being scared of running out of power a couple of hrs later, perhaps they could fit little dynamo's to each wheel like we used to do to our bikes when we were kids so that the lights had power.
Bmw and Toyota should build that beautiful car featured and ensure they fit it with a drivetrain that has an inexhaustable supply of fuel.

A lot of this is due to the demand for diesel, aswell as Hybrid. BMW get proven battery technology, and Toyota get the new Compliant diesel engines they havent been building and engineering, as they have been looking at hybrid. Two of the best, going at it together to improve future fuels too, cant be a bad thing really can it!
Im looking forward to selling Toyota's with a wider range of newer, better diesel engines!

"The companies agreed to set-up a feasibility study to define a joint platform concept for a mid-size sports vehicle that is to be completed by the end of 2013. The two companies aim to combine each other's technology and knowledge at a high level to maximise customer satisfaction. Both companies are to share the vision to further collaborate in the field of sports vehicle development."
Buzzword mambo jambo.

So did Toyota fall out with Subaru? I thought there might be some more mileage in the relationship. I was looking forward to seeing Landcruiser type vehicle with Subaru engineering.
Subaru don't really have a proper off/on roader at a time when SUV's are all the rage. Maybe something lightweight and short wheel base with a 3.0ltr Twin turbo diesel boxer and drivetrain in a Landcruiser type chassis. Mmmmm

Hydrogen from water is not a fuel, it is a means for moving energy from a power station to a car. Electrolysing water to make hydrogen to burn in an internal combustion engine is so horribly energy inefficient that it is a non-starter. Any hydrogen car will be an electric car with a fuel cell competing directly against battery tech. My money would be on batteries getting faster charging and lighter to the point where shipping cryogenically stored hydrogen round the country looks silly. The car pictured in this article looks great, wouldnt it be nice if you could buy one and go for a drive in it not being scared of running out of power a couple of hrs later, perhaps they could fit little dynamo's to each wheel like we used to do to our bikes when we were kids so that the lights had power.

Anything would be better than a fwd BMW sports car.
Mini Coupe does alright. And what's wrong with bringing out FWD models while they still are producing RWD across the range? Just don't buy the FWD models and stick with 1 series, 3 series, 4 series, 5 series, 6 series, 7 series, Z4. It's not like you haven't got choice.Good on them for expanding their range. A lot of people are put off by buying RWD and BMW because of bad weather etc. It opens them up to a lot more buyers.
It would be interesting the take on a new Supra, but I think it would be more towards a re-hash of the Celica. Look at the direction of the new NSX, Skyline(GTR). The Supra's 90's rivals. They are all now supercars. I think it wouldn't be a fit for the Supra name(obviously i'm ignoring the RX7's replacement, the RX-8 was a step back really)
At least if they start with the Celica name (or another) at least it gives them room to bring out a hotter model with the Supra name.
It should increase Toyota's flagging sales, its got a BMW diesel engine, don't you know. I heard that many a time when people talk about their MG ZT dervs.

I may not be 100% saying this, but I believe Toyota own Fujitsu Heavy Industries, who own Subaru? Or something along those lines, so I dont think they have fallen out. Its purely an outreach for more technology, Subaru couldn't give them that

Toyota own a 16 percent share or so in FHI I believe. So I would suggest you're right and they haven't fallen out. Especially judging by the amount of engineers / accountants from both companies that I teach here who tell me about the work they do together. Its purely an outreach for more technology, Subaru couldn't give them that

New Forrester is is getting on for Land Cruiser size now, smaller new SUV thing has just come out, have you guys been shown this over there yet?Subaru don't really have a proper off/on roader at a time when SUV's are all the rage.
