The problem is I looked up the prices and it was £20,000, more expensive than the equivalent Focus or even Golf. This hot version is likely to be just as ambitiously priced, and without the brand image and history (important in this sector) .
2 things, I stand to be corercted but I very much doubt like for like that the Kia was more expensive than a similar Focus or especially the Golf...
Also, brand image and history is is a moot point, this market sector covers nearly every demographic, those that think nothing betters a Golf and only a Golf will do because is Golf is best.... those looking for a bargain...those looking to be different and/or those just looking for a good VFM white good.

For a modern car, that is not a bad effort at all. Better than many.

If it drives well and people can get over the Kia badge, should do well.

Can't say it's the sort of thing I'd be likely to spend £20k (I'm guessing it'll be about that) on, but I'd rock that long before I'd sit in an A3.....

The prices are on the right, the car I rented was a New cee'd '4' 1.6 CRDi Manual ISG - £20,695!

£17,145 for 1.6 Diesel Focus. Stick on all the options you want, still cheaper than the cee'd. Just as an example. Maybe the Kia is better, I was just shocked.

Heavier car, more peaky engine, front wheel drive? That adds up.
True, but compare it to our Octavia VRS - the Kia has more power, is 100kg lighter, and is nearly a second slower to 60.
Gearing then? With a modern drive to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, cars tend to be higher-geared so they rev lower, right?

The '4' is the loaded version though, with leather, nav and a lot of extra stuff. With driver assistance pack, leather and nav, a Focus 1.6 Titanium X is £24,695. Admittedly you might get £6k discount so the transaction price is lower, but on list prices the Kia is £2k cheaper.

It's a great looking car, as one might reasonably expect from Peter Schreyer, I just hope it's good to drive. This car will really go under the microscope, because the press will see it as a massive nail in the coffin of the European mainstream manufacturers if a Korean company can produce a car that is desirable.
I'm sure people said the same about the first truly competitive Japanese cars, yet the Europeans seem to still be going.
Yes, but how many of them died along the way though.

I'd guess either much higher gearing (so out of the power band more) or lower gearing (so it can't reach 60 in second). Either way, it probably means that under more common accelerative circumstances, the Kia will be faster than the figures suggest.

The problem with this is that if you slightly alter the grille you have a Fiesta look-a-like, which is a shame because I really like the look of this and think that Kia have done amazing job these last few years.

I have a feeling Kia have something cooking with this car, the amount they are downplaying it suggests it might be a lot better than everyone is expecting.

That is a really good looking car.

I can't believe that I'm genuinely considering one as a buy in a few years...

kia's are getting better looking to be fair, and probably drive well too,but I was shocked too see how much they are!
To me the appeal of a Kia would be a low price, take that away and what are you left with?

How can Kia go wrong with its iconic tiger-nosed grille?

A car that is competitive with other cars in its class. They are no longer cheaper, because they no longer have to make up ground from areas like quality, space, interior, and looks, as they did in the past. They are not the last word in driving pleasure, but when you look at what most buyers in the family hatch segment seem to be after - space, reliability, long warranty and low running costs - Kia provides a compelling product.

Am I missing something? VW website says £25,915?

Anyway, nice looking car, as is all the Kia range.

Kia and Hyundai are really impressing me with their design. Ok, they're a bit generic, but at least they're more interesting than a Golf. I saw the new model Golf a couple of days ago - I had to really look to make sure it was the new one - and I honestly found it even more boring than I thought it would be from the pictures. Their advertising "Das Auto" is right: it's just a car with no passion or interest.
