less expensive than a 911...
The Jaguar PR machine is trying to perform a jedi mind trick on this one.The car is in competition against the Boxster and Cayman and will be tested as such, its just Jaguar who want to position it against the 911.
That aside I will have one of these in racing green, choc interior and the RS badge.
I saw these a couple of weeks ago at the Detroit motor show. Lovely looking things in the flesh. Surprisingly compact and agile looking. Also from these vids the V6 sounds much more like a Jag should. Always loved that hollow howling sound that old Jags made.
Although I was slightly disappointed to see that they've used cheapo generic brake calipers from the likes of ATE/Continental etc. rather than some proper monoblocks. It was the same across the entire Jag range (including the S versions) which really smacks of cost cutting.

First time I've seen the F-Type and I don't like it, unsubtle exhaust note and it looks like a Nissan
It could have looked like this...
Are you one of those people who think that Jags should all still look like the 90s XJ? It's called progress. It could have looked like this...
Having spent most of Tuesday up at Castle Bromwich with the F-Type i can say its even more attractive in the metal and those exhaust notes are even ruder...

Exactly. People should be happy that over recent years Jaguar has finally moved on to more modern aesthetics, they'll soon loose their "old mans car" tag. I remember seeing a very similiar rear end on a concept years ago, never thought they would have the balls to do it, but fair play to them for moving things on.

"Sounds great until we get to the "8-speed auto". Most of all 911's and half of R8's are Manual's and even the "autos" are clutched versions. They need to get a manual in that thing."
you may be surprised to learn that most new ones sold in are in fact PDK in the case of the Porsche
It has a quick shift gearchange system, changes gear in 150ms, same as a PDK transmission.
Brakes are on the 3.0S 380PS
Front Disc Diameter (mm) 380
Rear Disc Diameter (mm) 325
Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab is £133,663.00 before options
No the auto box is the ZF torque converter box the same as you get in a 520d, PDK is different. you may be surprised to learn that most new ones sold in are in fact PDK in the case of the Porsche

And this isn't a rival for the 911 turbo S! It's a boxster/cayman rival no matter what Jaguars PR machine says and it should be cheaper than it is.

Is it not possible for cars to not really be rivals anymore? Just because Porsche makes a set of cars in a certain range doesn't mean everyone else has to line up their ranges. This is a competitor for an entry-level 911 whichever way you cut it, but only for price. Practicality is different between the two of them, but how many people actually use all the seats in a 911? I've never seen one with >2 people in it.

You don't need to put people in the rear seats of a 911 for them to give you added practicality either it's extra storage and room for stuff which makes the car appealing with the added bonus of being able to carry passengers.
The 911 is lighter/faster more efficent more technically adavanced and has a pedigree in this sector that none can match (whether you like it or not)
Jaguar will want all the comparision tests done against the 911 and probably the R8 the British press will accomodate that request out of loyality etc....but it's a Cayman/Boxster rival priced too high.
I know this sounds very negative but I like the car and the thought of British jobs etc....but at the current pricing I won't be looking at it.
When the last great sports car Jaguar produced went on sale it wasn't just the speed and beauty that shocked everyone it was also the price. (in a good way)

Well, they did point out the pricing error on Top Gear earlier, so it's quite a common point of view.
To remedy the situation I'm sure Jaguar will produce a cheaper sports car based on the next X-Type successor and price that car below £40k. It seems like the most obvious thing to do really.

I have a 5.0 XKR Coupe. Now, for the basic list price of 79k you get all the toys included. The XKR Convertible is 85k list price and also includes all the toys as standard.
Having spec'd up a F Type V8S it came to over 90k for a comparable spec to the XKR.
I cannot see how this price can be justified, surely it should be cheaper?! Unless of course the new XK when it comes is going to be vastly more expensive than at present. The F Type pricing certainly suggests that this will be the case, particularly with the new DB9 being 130k.
I am still considering the F Type when the coupe comes out but it does annoy me that I will have to buy new in order to get one with a spec that I'm happy with. I also worry that the 'everything's an extra' issue will make the residules laughable.

But look at engine size and power, a big part of the make up of cars like this, and I am not sure how the F-Type, with a base spec of a 3.0 supercharged V6 with 340hp and a range topping 5.0 supercharged V8 with 495hp compares to a Boxster with a 2.7 boxer6 with 265hp rather than a 911 with a 3.4 boxer6 and 350hp. Certainly makes the F-Type look like more of a 911 rival to me.

I always thought the F-Type was going to be launched as a sort of baby XK (like a lot of people it seems) until I saw the prices! It seems expensive in all honesty. BUT it is a gorgeous looking thing. Having spec'd up a F Type V8S it came to over 90k for a comparable spec to the XKR.
