Had a TD in '94 well screwed together, 45 mpg, good mid range torque, handled better than most, nicer than Golf Gti of the day.

The one I had must have been a Friday afternoon car then.

Never have I driven a more hateful, unreliable, weak and flimsy piece of st. OK, the engine kept working day in, day out. But everything else - I mean EVERY other system - was pathetic. I had keys snap in the door lock, and in the ignition. The electrics failed more often than in 1991 Baghdad, the passenger seat fell through the floor and was help in by the handle of a hairbrush, the handbrake snapped on me, the noise inside was awful, and on a cosmetic note, the driver's seat was where you got the best feel of the awful interior. Ended up giving it to the s - who chose to trailer it away rather than drive it, which tells you all you need to know.

That car alone made me promise myself I'd never, ever have another French car, no matter what price. Citroen especially. I'd rather drive a Smart car. Or pushbike. Anything but a French car.

And £2k+ for that? Dreamer. Give me a 2 grand 100k mile Focus over that any day...

you had a 16v or just a zx? the passenger seat was held in by a hairbrush? it sounds to me you just had a knakered car.

Mine isn't, it caught fire and died.

I hope it does go for £2k +

And then I hope every BX 16v from here on in goes for £2k +

I'm going to be selling a BX 16v soon

hehe
If that's the one in your profile, it's stunning. I'd pay good money for that. Of course, I'd use it as a daily drivers too...

I've been planning on selling my A8 for a small hot hatch, partly because I want to experience that generation of cars before they are all gone, and partly because I will be moving departments at work soon, to a place with a much smaller car park where the A8 won't fit. I've decided on an S1 106 Rallye. But these glorious Citroens are certainly food for thought.
Not my red one, this one's a platinum metallic grey sort of colour. Same spec, better bodywork than the red one, but needs some hydraulic pipework as well as an MOT. Been meaning to get round to it for months, but I REALLY need to get round to sorting it now. I'll use it for the year, but advertise it at the same time no doubt. As much as I love them, I don't need two laugh

I've had lots of interest in it so far, which is nice too. Nice to see people rate them now, when they were unloved for so many years.

It's the one on the right:

As much as I like these, I do think 2k is toppy. When I was looking a few months back there was a green one up north with 70k on the clock for £800. Whilst I am in no doubt this one is immaculate, I would struggle to justify the extra money.

Damn this thread....looking at ZX's now

I reckon i check out the quality of the ZX's for sale about once a month, everytime i feel the need for an interesting shed. I do manage to avoid the temptation normally however this thread could tip me over the edge.

where? can you find me a link? there was a green one (green is the worst colour imo) in the northeast with 120k miles in october cant find the one with 70k

there were only 507 imported to the UK. something like 19 on the road just now. not a lot of choice! considering most are 100k and need a lot of work and this one has 38k had the oil changed 19 times with an impeccable service record.

So who thinks that PSA put a lot more development work into chassis/suspension/steering on the ZX & 306 than the newer cars (307 / Xsara etc) ........?

Well seeing as the Xsara is a ZX/306 underneath, probably not a lot different wink

But no I know what you mean. Anything post Xsara VTS pretty much lost that 'something' they used to have. It coincides with the time they dropped the torsion bar rear setup (206 estate, 307 & C3 were the first to go normal springs at the back and aren't anywhere near as good to drive).
By rights the 206 GTi/GTi 180 ought to have the spark, because it's from the same ilk as the older cars in terms of components and design and that torsion bar setup. But they're just a bit.........you know!

Ph1 Xsara VTS is the real unsung hero. They really are good! They just look completely void of styling effort, which is worse than being ugly!

Slightly off topic; lots of talk about the TD - a great car. My dad had one in the late 90s that I used to take when he was away with work. Fuel consumption was amazing and used to use it to visit my then girlfriend 50 miles away. Much cheaper round trip than my 309 GTi at the time and on give or take journeys felt almost as quick. Passive rear steer felt weird, but in a good way, really helping out that heavy front end.

That 16V though. Seriously, seriously tempting. How good does that look!

although similar the xsara had 5mm rear toe in 306 4.2mm i think the zx was 0. its what gave its sharp turn in. im pretty sure the rear arb within the torsion beam was thickest in the zx 16v too. the zx was also very much lighter than the xsara and 306. in europe the mild faclift on the zx also had the xu10j4rs engine. there is rumour one or twk made it to the uk but ive never seen one.

i had a 2001 facelift xsara vts and found it soft and vague

Sorry, wrong symbol before, I did know that on the ZX/306 smile.

Interesting comments though, thanks!

Do you know what changed on ph1 Xsara to ph2? I've a ph2 VTR which feels more solid than the ZX and seems to roll a bit less, but the fluidity as it has been described on this topic already, isn't there. More point and squirt (esp after a friend plugged the ecu into his laptop, ahem), but not the same satisfaction on sweeping bends.

The steering feedback (over and above there being more power assistance) isn't as good either.

Maybe ph2 is a 307 and a ph1 was a 306 cry !?

The ph2 Xsara VTS was pants, the ph1 is very different. It might even have massive differences like a different geo setup on the rear axle smile

Never seen a ZX Dakar over here, but I've read they're sub 20secs 0-100mph cars.
