RE: Group B legends in action

I remember there was a major rally in the 80"s that started from bradford 2 years in a row, think 85-86,was it the National breakdown rally? before the start you could walk around the cars,i remeber Louise
Aitken Walkers nissan 240RS,it was very loud on tickover. Think Russel Brook"s Manta 400 was there cant remeber the rest but was all the top drivers and cars, there was a white RS 200 road car parked on a side street with a press sticker in the windscreen.

I'm glad these events are invite-only. Keeps the loyal fans away who stood in Welsh mud every year, or helped run the events...
OK, OK, exaggeration, but it bothers me that everyone loves Group B, the cars look/sound great, there's regular stories about how some organisation or another is going to do demo runs... Then it all fizzles out. Again. Or it's quite cliquey.
Bah, humbug.

an Evo spec RS200
Slightly dissapointed there wasn't a Delta S4 there either or that Hansports Michelle Mouton SWB S1 didn't stretch her legs, but the engine was in Germany being rebuilt I believe.
We have to respect that these things are now owned by privateer's now and they don't have the budget of manufacturers now behind them.

With respect LongLiveTazio, like you, I stood in Welsh Mud every year and frequently jumped up into tree's when the whistle got blew to get the **** outta the way, but I haven't lost touch ever since the sad event when Joaquim Santos lost control of his RS200 avoid the crowd on the outside of the corner but unfortunately wasn't able to avoid the crowd on the inside. Inevitably the car left the road, ploughing into the crowd, killing three and injuring dozens more. After this accident all works teams withdrew from the rally & Group B cars were immediately banned mid '86.OK, OK, exaggeration, but it bothers me that everyone loves Group B, the cars look/sound great, there's regular stories about how some organisation or another is going to do demo runs... Even since this time, I have followed WRC and even in the era of Makkinen and McRae, they never really quite lived upto the sound of the old 5 cylinder Audi S1/E2 flying last, wastegate chattering. Luckily I had recently re-discovered the love of Group B on Facebook and when I got wind that this event was planning to happen in and around the Gold Cup at Oulton Park, it got canned for too many reasons, but when this one was announced, I was all over it. The general feedback of this event was really good and although some people missed out, in a way I'm kinda glad (selfishly) as the minimalistic nature kept the event more personal and not overrun by too many people. I hope its the same again next year, but now the cat is out of the bag, it may disappoint people that wanted to go but couldn't get a chance to. We'll have to wait and see.......
Isn't there a case for re-introducing this class or similar? I'd have thought that with the improved crowd control that we seem to have, the terrible accidents that led to Group B being banned could be avoided. Just a thought.

The "no limits" thing would make development costs skyrocket, and not having restrictions on what was acceptable or not acceptable would mean the team with the biggest budget would win, whereas at the moment they are capped for power, dimension, type of gearbox, driver aids etc.Mastodon2 said:

It was an awesome day of noise and tyre smoke and reliving some great memories from the days of hearing and seeing Group B rallying on the stages. It was a small invited group this time as it was a first event. Everyone that I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I for one just love to see these cars being used properly instead of mothballed in a museum somewhere. There are a couple of videos on facebook I think. John Hanlon had a couple of cameras on the Audi on one of the runs round the circuit.

The reason that this first meeting invite only, was to keep the Public Liability insurance cost's down whilst making sure there would be enough enthusiasm for future events.
The Curborough meeting confirmed that the passion for these cars is still out there, and plans are already under way to organise another action day which will Not be resticted to invite only.
John H will be making the most of his 20+ years of Group B Car experience and contacts, to ensure the next event will be even better.
