Close, but not quite, one junction away.
It happened here.

By the way, the cyclist is also this cyclist.

ETA Tank:

Cyclist with mega-strobe on the front of his bike was riding along, an Audi was in the wrong lane and stopped just shy of a signal controlled box junction, causing the cyclist to slow. He gobbed off at the driver, then carried on his way. Whilst he was slowed by the Audi, the traffic lights had changed, and presented the peds at the crossing with a green man before cyclo-dick had crossed. A small boy, about 4 or 5 walked out in front of the cyclist, who made no effort to stop and clattered the lad. Lance wkstrong then turned his bike round and rode back to the boy and parent, strobing them in the face, and blamed the car driver.

The time between the car incident and Bradley wkins hitting the kid was several seconds, long enough for the Wheeled Warrior to get back up to speed and for the incidents to be completely unrelated.
Cheers Bob. Sounds like a complete throbber.

Rubberneckers. Heading westbound on A40 from White City this evening, nose to tail traffic for miles and miles on what it normally a bad enough bit of road. Accident on my carriageway? Broken down lorry? Of course not, just a bunch of gibbons stopping to gawp at a 3 car shunt on the other carriageway. Excellent work people.

Oh, and people trying to police the roads.

Now this one might split opinions...

Driving up the M6 from Birmingham. Rush hour traffic but surprisingly it's moving quite well..

The gantry says 50mph. I'm in the outside lane as I don't need to get off for a while.

Lane 1 is doing 50-55mph. Lane 2 is doing 55-60mph. Us (lane 3) are doing 47mph.

Yes, the gantry says 50, but lanes 1 and 2 are effectively undertaking us, because the little red 107 2 cars in front of me HAS to travel at 47mph. There's a 20+ car gap in front of him while the other 2 lanes are passing us. Why not just move over?

Fair enough, he didn't want to speed, but everyone else was more than willing to, I don't see what he was gaining by (IMO) being a jobsworth and holding us all up. I know on paper he wasn't doing anything wrong, but a bit of common sense would say that if everyone else wants to go faster, just move over to a slower lane..

Am I being an arse or can you see my point? It wasn't even like he was going slightly slower, he was holding it 2-3mph below the gantry sign and a good 10-15mph below the 'slower' 2 lanes, it was just kinda obnoxious..
I notice this a lot in 'starter cars' like the 107/Aygo/C1. Always travelling just under the quoted speed limit and never speeding up, even to safely pass a hazard in the raod.

I WONDER, if it is something to do with the black boxes that insurers insist on more and more for new drivers.
Its a given that the box would know a 50mph limit and I would bet money that next years premium will not go down if it shows 51mph in the box history.

I am NOT, saying it is that, but I nhave just noticed more of a trend this last year.
I imagine the insurance company would also like to know that the driver was sat in the wrong lane making themselves a rolling hazard by blocking the lane...

Oh wait sorry I was away in ideal world. It's perfectly fine in the eyes of insurance to do the above BUT FOR THE DEAR LOVE OF THE CHILDREN THEY'RE DRIVING AT 51 MILES AN HOUR NEXT YEARS PREMIUM ONE MILLION POUNDS!!!!
We know they use GPS technology, and you people are paranoid about exceeding the 'number, but... It could just be a tin foil hat moment...

It would interesting for somebody in the insurance industry could confirm or deny it

Not a bad stab at it then, considering I've never been to York, and all I had to go on was comparing my memory of the video with Google's satellite view, and the fact that most of the cyclists Youtube videos seem to have 'York' in the title. I worked it back from the A19, and looked for a yellow box junction. The one I picked out was larger (the yellow box) and stood out more, and the principal roads appeared to be orientated the same way. One junction away? I'll try harder next time wink

Impressive, seriously impressive.

The cyclist has said he's cycled around York for 30 years, surely with those lovely manners someone should be able to identify him?

It was a good attempt.
It is a horrible junction, in fact if you go one step forward in the streetview link I showed one of the usual incidents is actually happening. I think I've posted on this thread several times with the incident happening there.

The one you posted is also a bugger. From where you posted you can't see left, and it's usually queuing making it very easy to get caught out and finding yourself in the yellow box or in a different awkward position.

I'd also try to avoid this one if you ever come to York ( http://goo.gl/maps/KsnLJ ). The Street View image says it all.

I hate, and avoid at all costs driving in the centre of York.

I served two years in Ripon, and always meant to visit York. The Railway Museum, Town Walls, the Viking centre, and Elvington, all were on the list of things to see. Sadly, it was a busy time at work, and my weekends were precious for going home to the wife and kids, so I never got around to it. I was posted away in haste, too, after a tour in Iraq, so I wasn't there to take advantage of the relatively quiet period on my return.

Maybe I'll get up there some day, but those Streetview images are enough to push any sane person over the edge and onto Park'n'Ride services (if they have them).

Yep, they have Park & Ride. Go by train if you can - the station is very close to the centre of town.

I don't really see how the junction can be made any better. The road geometry is absolutely dictated by the buildings, the footways couldn't be any narrower and still be DDA compliant. On streetview, people are clearly walking in the road because there is no space on the footway. I wouldn't mind betting every building within 100 yards is listed. York would not knock down historic buildings to give a few metres of extra visibility. They'd close the road before they attacked a listed building - English Heritage (or whatever they're called now) would have an absolute fit.

I don't think the council have done a terrible job with making the roads, considering they're working around listed buildings as you say. I meant the people running across the road in front of the Volvo in the Streetview image, not the ones walking in the road past the other peds.

I would hate them to knock down the buildings to make way for better roads, I like cars and driving and hate public transport but we've got six P&R sites and a train station right in the city centre, I really don't see why you need to drive into the centre if you're visiting. If you're driving through York to get to the other side 9 times out of 10 it's quicker to go around the outer ring road, I'm often going from one side of York to the other, I very, very rarely use the centre, if I do I walk, advantages of a small city, realistically you could walk from one side to the other quite easily, not that I'd ever do that, I have a car.

I'm trying to find something online but I'm sure the council nearly knocked down part of the centre of York in the 60s to build a large dual carriageway, like Leeds or Birmingham has, thank god they didn't.

I have to pick someone up from the station at the end of rush hour tonight, looking forward to that!

Is that true? The black boxes track the variable speed cameras on gantries? Flipping heck..
Almost certainly not, given how frequently they can update them. However that doesn't mean that the muppets driving around with black boxes don't think they can be tracked and so stick to the indicated speed no matter what.

I was driving along the northbound A1 this evening at steady 65-70mph, staying well away from the TDI tailgate brigade occupying lane 2.

I suddenly notice that everybody is braking and pulling into lane 1. What could be the problem? An accident? Animals or debris in the road? No, it's a marked 5 series sat in lane 1 at 60 mph rolleyes

Cue lots of people driving at 50 mph, followed by painfully hesitant overtakes with a 0.5mph speed differential, (including a rather tasty 911 and a RS6!) panic braking and trying to pull in to gaps that just weren't big enough because people couldn't possibly drive at the speed limit. Oh think of the children! I'll get a driving ban!eek

I had to laugh at all the lemmings as I passed at 70mph in my 14 year old Golf, followed by a bloke in a tatty old Transit hehe

hehe Much like all of the motorway suddenly anchoring on to pass the HATO wagons at 64.1mph.

Move to outside lane, resume cruise at 90.

Yep yes
Saw a classic on the M1 this week. 99% of people huddled behind the HATO in lanes 1 and 2.
Me and K reg Micra swan past all the powerfully built company directors in their 520d's, closely followed by a smoke belching Sprinter van doing warp speed in lane 4hehe
