you can't push rarity to the side on the SL73, it's 1 of 2 cars ever made!
No it isn't. It's 1 of 85.

Still rare though.
You're both right.

If the below is to be believed then the SL73 (R129 series) was one of 85 and only 2 were RHD (and 565bhp - although that sounds quite a lot!!):

I do not have anyinterest in getting in this car (or the means but that's beside the point). You'd feel like you were constantly on the set of "Inner Space"

Ahh, OK. CL600 seems an acceptable alternative though.
Similar scenario with those. The NA version is no match for the 2003 onwards bi-turbo model.

yes

I'd always take the AMG over the 600 though. The noise is much better with the AMG.

Mmh, great and rare find.
However, rarity aside, I wouldn't change my SL600 with the AMG V8. True, the V8 is nimbler and packs the same grunt. But buying an R129 because it is nimble is just insane. It is a tank, beautiful, even compact, but not nimble. So why not enjoy the silkiness of the V12 instead?
The difference in smoothness between V12 and V8 is amazing, and certainly more manifest than the handling differences.

Also, is the SL60 an official Mercedes or just an AMG tuned one? The W202 C36 was the first official AMG Mercedes (previously AMG was just an independent tuner, like Brabus), and I think the SL73 was already an official car, but not sure where the SL60 fits. It was launched in 1993, so at that time it was definitely non-official, but maybe it was 'adopted' later on?

It would have to be the 2003-onward Supercharged model though.

I believe the earlier CL55 AMG had similar engines to the W210 E55 AMG, with circa 354 bhp?

Kompressor models have almost 500 bhp, and easily over 600bhp if worked on by DMS!

yes About 360bhp I think.

My dad had both from new, the difference between the two is staggering.

If you're planning on tweaking it, I believe the 600 is better for it?

Lovely car indeed, but it'd be an E60 for me, with some proper Q-appeal smile

Yes, I believe it is. Those V12 Twin Turbo have so much torque.

Renntech were making their own SL73s in the southern US during the 1990's. Might still do conversions. I remember seeing and hearing one here in Canada years ago. Savage car!

My dad has one of these sitting in the garage. It's a great car to cruise around in and is pretty quick.

If anyone fancy's a low mileage 1995 SL60 in dark blue with all the AMG fixtures. Drop me a PM as It'll be going up for sale in March.

Tommy if this car was first registered in glasgow let me know as I knew the owner and have pics of it when it was new! I love these cars so much and i nearly talked my friend in to buying a azurite one about 18 months ago with more miles and it was about £12-13k
I agree with the 500sl its such a great car alrounder that Ive bought 2 of them in the last 3 months, one for my dad and one as my run about. Mine is actually 1 of the first r129's ever made and was a dealer demo. As many here say I was at the age where these wiped the floor with pretty much any other car on sale in terms of class and technology.

From what I can make out the was registered in Swindon.

I don't think he'll be wanting £24K for it. I think it'll go up for sale for quite a bit less than that.

The R129 SL is undoubtedly the sexiest Mercedes ever. But that vomit-pink interior brings to mind the worst excesses of Porsche. It has no place in something like this. It is disgusting, especially contrasted against the steering wheel.

These are lovely Mercs, I'm not sure what it is about this period in the 90s but I think almost all manufacturers have lost the plot aesthetically since, with few cars looking as good. I'm not a huge Merc fan but I make exception for these big power coupés and verts, it's what Merc do best.

'Lesser V8 SLs can be had for half this amount'. For £6K, you can have a fully ramped & stamped R129 500SL with sensible mileage. £20k is a lot to pay for 0.9 secs off the 0-60 time....
Try finding a good one at that price though. I looked at around 20 cars, all of which seemed alright on paper and having asked detailed questions of the owner. There is a huge number of neglected cars out there and putting them right isn't worth the expenditure.

In the end we bought an SL60. The performance is significantly better. Also it was very well specced. Finding a good SL500 in the right spec was proving nigh on impossible and adding on the extras I wanted would have meant spending not far off the same. I'm also hoping the depreciation will be less with the SL60. Not to mention it's nice to own something considered a bit special.

Being the owner of one of these cars my view of the likes of Avantgarde is that they probably do deserve to earn quite a premium. Mine is a good car but I still managed to spend about £3,000 on various bits and bobs. There is also quite a risk if they do go wrong so if properly prepared and supplied with an uncoditional 12 month warranty and you don't want the hasle of travelling all over the country to find a good one it's probably fair enough plus it's only a starting price.

This is ours:

Bargain AMG has to be here: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

The AMG Supercharged 5.5 V8 in an attrative coupe for less than 7 grand? If it wasn't for the fear of much borkage I would have one in a snap.
That isn't supercharged.
Quite right. The difference between that and the later SC version is like night and day. yes
Interestingly the dials show V8 Kompressor. Either it's had a new instrument binnacle or the pictures aren't from the same car. Part of me reckons the latter; the dash shows 22° and it appears to be overcast and dreary outside... nerdscratchchin

I think this is a pinnacle car never to be reproduced again. A car I have always wanted. it represents so much in Mercedes history, where boundaries were pushed. This engine ended up as a Italian super car, pretty impressive really to think nearly 16 years ago a german stopping on Italian ground.

oh and this car has sold twice from same dealer for about 45k....?
