Once again the EU sticks it's nose into something it has absolutely no business being involved in.

68db?

that's roughly the volume of a normal conversation at 3 feet

A car's tyres on the road are far louder than that.

If we are going to make nonsense laws like this, than I vote to ban all 4 cylinder cars and silly little mopeds as they sound bloody awful. Can I be an MEP?

Ha I do this too! I live in Fishers Pond and there is a 996 Turbo that always opens it up past the house, I would love to know if that person is on here.

It makes me smile every time I hear it biggrin

Back to the point, I think the EU should F*** off!
No but if you ever hear a Caterham open up as it joins the Marwell road that'll be me. smile
I think I have heard you a couple of times before actually! I always try and get to the window to see if I am right or to see what it is, so sad biggrin

Is it Blue? I am sure I have seen you whilst cleaning my Trophy. I live pretty much opposite the Queens Head so anything that accelerates down that first straight from the traffic lights I can hear really clearly!

I will keep an eye out anyway wink

I totally agree with the 'make electric cars louder' bit. A Prius reversed out of a driveway whilst I was out for a run the other evening and I nearly ran straight into the side of it. Being too quiet is dangerous, whereas being a bit loud on full chat occasionally shouldn't hurt anyone.
Yeah, I was out running the other night too, and ran straight into a brick wall! It should have been fitted with warning sirens and flashing lights, it was a bloody danger.
You need to go to Specsavers. wink

Ok, perhaps it was the driver who was at fault. She was reversing briskly enough from behind a tall wall, across a pavement, in a silent car with no exhaust smoke. There was nothing to give the game away. At least with 99% of cars, you can pick out the noise or see the exhaust gases, even if the driver can't see you, then you can be prepared for it to move. This is all aside from the point that I'm a pedestrian using the pavement, she should give way to me.
The thing is we now live in a world where listening or looking at the exhaust is no longer enough to tell if "1%" of the cars are about to run you over. And that figure is only going to increase.

We can either request more legislation, or up our observation skills. (Or get run over).

There is no point in moaning that you always used to be able to spot an active car. Things have moved on.

I say that having managed to avoid being run over by any electric car, milk floats, bicycles, horsde riders, OAPs carts on the pavement or fat Yanks Sedgewaying around airports. None of which need legislation to make them louder so I can avoid them.

"Let's give them a few ideas, shall we?'

Yeah, well, in that spirit, the nice folk in Brussels might want to focus their attention on digging themselves out of the biggest economic hole in recent history instead of producing a 400 page guide to what a car can sound like.

It never ceases to amaze me the time, money, and paper the EU can absorb trying to fix something that wasn't really broken in the first place.

68dB? Anyone know what a standard E46 CSL makes so I can gauge that figure?

quite...as the dB scale is logarithmic.
In practical terms, reducing by 3dB is halving the sound energy, or the perceived volume; so as you can see 6dB is a massive cut.
Not quite, since the human ear also has a Logarithmic response. -6dB is a halving of the sound pressure level, but to halve the apparent volume you need a 10dB reduction.

From OP...
"So what if you choose to retrofit a noisier aftermarket exhaust system? European Parliament spokesperson Baptiste Chatain told us categorically "aftermarket exhausts are not covered by this legislation." In the first phase - six years after introduction - it will cover newly designed cars and then two years later all new cars sold. Expect an increasing number of carmakers suddenly offering 'dealer fit' exhausts as a result."

Not neccessarily.

For example, BMW do BMW Performance exhausts for some of their cars, and I have one on my 135.
But, they also do an engine power upgrade for the 135, BUT a dealer won't fit the power upgrade to your car if you have the exhaust fitted, as when tested by BMW the combination of the two pushed the noise above the current EU limitation.

I also agree and wish the EU would just fk off, or rather we should just fk off out of it. They are just a complete bunch of control freaks.

Am I the only person that read the line ''That's according to the European Parliament, which has just voted in a draft law''

Funny thing is, some of the 'powerfully built directors' on here probably actively employ foreign workers and wouldn't think of keeping things 'British'. tongue out

I both own a V8 w/a Tubi system on it, and live on a busy seafront road.

Me & the missus pop up like meerkats whenever something that sounds good drives by, and the only irritating noises are the aformentioned kids with souped-up shopping cars and BLOODY MIDDLE AGED MEN ON HARLEYS blipping them at the lights!

Most large capacity, multi cylindered engines make a good noise, esp. when amplified. Most hatchbacks/motorcycles do not.

Both categories that fall outside these proposals.
If you don't like the sound of a Harley you're already dead.

The bit that annoys me the most is that he's terrible at parking.
That is a quality rant about noise only to find that it's his parking that is most annoying. Love it. biggrin

In my opinion its the horrible raspy st that has ruined it.
Far too many people putting horrible raspy st on cars and ruining them.
I was behind a Focus ST not long back,a car I once considered buying some time back.
When the driver put his foot down, rather than sounding like a nice 5 cylinder with it's obvious aftermarket exhaust system complimenting the engine,it sounded like a raspy horrible bag of st to be honest.
Ruined.By noise.

Cars can still be loud and sound nice.

But then, it was probably a 1.0 with a fart can and a body kit and not actually an ST.

A loud 4cyl Caterham = a-ok

An equally noisy Ford with the same engine = omgchavswtf

Too loud is too loud.
