Another bipolar debate.

Perhaps some of those that reside next to roads love cars?

Perhaps they just find the 'Woop, Woop, Woop' Chinook sound effects from passing Subarus a bit wearing after the 1000th time?

I once had the misfortune of being a pedestrian in the vicinity of an Impreza that was that loud, or badly silenced it didn't sound like a flat four. It sounded like any other 4 cylinder car with a stupidly loud, flatulent exhaust on it.

Those motorcyclists that seem to slip the clutch to hoist the front wheel sound a bit lame too.

Looks like a best fit my new 4 branch manifold, decat, 2.5inch diameter straight through pipe with one silencer set up pretty quick if I want maximum enjoyment from it.

I really do think there are far bigger issues in the EU right now than a few noisy exhausts.

Instead of yet more legislation how about simplifying them so money is better spent where it really matters and on issues that actually make a noticable difference to people lives.

I'm no fan of needlessly noisy exhausts, but the majority of intrusive noise from cars comes from tyre roar.

Do something about that instead Eurocrats.
I thought we did have a solution for that (rubberised tarmac) but we sold the rights to the Germans in the 50s/60s? Or something along those lines but the point is, we have/had the means to make roads quiet, but choose/chose not to.

This country can't even build roads to cope with the volume of traffic, let alone fix potholes properly, so what chance do we EVER have of getting quiet tarmac?

I know, let's get the EU to force all cars to wear tyres no wider than 205 section instead.

I live next to an A-road, albeit behind a high fence and a row of conifers, and I really don't mind hearing the odd loud car go past because I like to try and guess what it was.

Why oh why in these times of budget cuts and austerity are governments wasting time and money on pointless legislation.
Tackle the real issues issues instead of side issues, easy vote winners and gay marriage

Indeed, lets vote to leave when the referendum comes up.

There are already drive-by noise limits, which cars have to meet. What's different here other than a reduction in noise level?

It's the crappy nifty-50, "rip 'n rev" mopeds that bother me.

quite...as the dB scale is logarithmic.
In practical terms, reducing by 3dB is halving the sound energy, or the perceived volume; so as you can see 6dB is a massive cut.
A vehicle would have to be whisper quiet to acheive this, as tyre noise and wind noise combined would be close to the proposed limit..

More EU madness sadly

You are spot on, it's a logarithmic scale of sound intensity so considered quite significant...

Not far off washing machines isn't 68db?

6dB is a MASSIVE amount - decibels are a logarithmic scale, so no, it's not simply 'about 10%' less sound pressure, it's a draconian measure and the single biggest decrease in the noise limits since they were introduced decades ago. Incidentally, almost no car currently on the market stands a chance of passing 68dB - something like a Hyundai Santa Fe makes so much tyre and engine noise it struggles at 74dB.

This will not only make manufacturers have to come up with all sorts of weird and wonderful exhaust solutions - the ISO test often sees 4000rpm+ in most cars so this can't just be at low revs - but the emphasis on tyre noise level will become ridiculous, to the point where OEM tyres cannot concentrate on ride or grip levels, only on minimum possible noise.

Going to be interesting to see how the industry reacts to yet another deliberately unattainable target.

Steady, they might take the Harris 'Space Saver Tyres' vid seriously...
