RE: EU to outlaw noisy cars?
Discussion
Well loud engines may well be bad for your lugholes, but I'd swear any medical research would find that the right engine noise enhances the wellbeing - the soul - of any true petrolhead.
A proper, bassy V8, en-masse - like the old RV8 TVR Tscuans at the old Silverstone Copse first corner, or standing by the wall as NASCARs whistle past at 200+ - will wiggle your innerds and wrinkle your mouth up at the corners like nothing else.

Do different eu contries have different rules? Or is it across the board?
There seems to be many rules in many participating countries, who either choose to ignore or have their own agenda over many heavily policed rulings in the uk.
How much power do they have? What are the penalties for not going with the regulations?

I see this as a good thing. The vast majority of noisy cars sound awful and even those that don't are annoying more of the time than they're pleasurable to listen to. As long as they don't try to apply it retrospectively to existing cars, that is.
Exactly - there's a world of difference between 'A loud car' and 'A Performance Car'. A Performance Car will at least have engineering expertise behind the sound, (Porsche, Ferrari and some others actually factor this in with switchable systems already) whereas A Loud Car will usually just be a Paxo with a motorbike 'silencer' (if at all)Another point is that most loud (and often symphonic, let's face it) performance cars are an infrequent spot on UK roads, plus some, like lambos are about the Theatre, so are often well received anyway.
The same can't be said (sadly) for the local Chav Tat.
Insanity.
We are subject to stupid acoustic requirements in our industry - door manufacture.
You get companies who are paid to make recommendations based on the information they gather, to 'build-in' to any new development.
These backwards organisations, known as "Acoustic Consultants", will make daft statements about an internal door requiring a sound reduction value of 49dB or more.
This is mental, as a 'normal' door achieves about 28dB, the difference is very significant.
It costs an absolute fortune to meet that level, with an un-attractive, heavy-duty and very industrial-looking door. Yet it has to be done, because "Think of the poor childrens' hearing!"
Stupidity defined.

Which standard noisy cars are you thinking of that sound bad? remember this is for new made and sold cars not 15 year old Saxos with bean cans on. GHEY.
Nothing makes me smile more than the howl of my V6 Busso, given extra song with a little help from Supersprint.
I am not one to pour scorn on the EU politicians just by default, but some of the things they come out with just seem to follow an agenda of stripping all pleasure from the world.

Sooo.. they want to make standard cars quieter to make things more pleasant for everyone...
The legislation doesn't affect those wanting to fit louder exhausts.. Dealer fit performance packs (or exhausts at least) will become more common and won't void any warranties..
Wheres the problem again?
I actually wish they would bring out a law that prevents you putting a ridiculously loud exhaust on 1.2 litre st box And bans those mopeds that do 8mph top speed but throw out 150dB of exhaust noise!

I'd be more than happy for my council to come down hard on some of the chav tat I've seen around here. There's a twit with a shed and loud exhaust in the next street to me, and we live in a reasonable area so he sticks out like a sore thumb. Lately he's taken it upon himself to 'tune' his car by revving it up and then tinkering under the bonnet. This lasted almost an entire day last weekend. This, coupled with another bloke who lives opposite who has a motorbike with a ridiculously loud exhaust, leaves me pretty peeved off after they've both been at it for hours.Another point is that most loud (and often symphonic, let's face it) performance cars are an infrequent spot on UK roads, plus some, like lambos are about the Theatre, so are often well received anyway.

Thing is, we already have laws against this sort of thing so I don't see why the EU thinks this is a good idea. But then maybe they're taking the responsibility away from people like myself (rightly so as it takes time/effort to complain about something), and tackling it head on at the source.
Anyway, they've hardly got the UK in mind, they're thinking of blighted east European families who have to put up with all the god awful sheds that I've seen driving around the place with stupid drain pipe exhausts and messed about cams.

It's exactly this kind of unnecessary meddling that makes people want to leave the EU.
Totally pointless bureaucratic nonsense, only being implemented to make someones job worthwhile.
I am not sure i ever wanted to be part of it in the first place.Totally pointless bureaucratic nonsense, only being implemented to make someones job worthwhile.
Do these people actually do anything worthwhile except formulate new and interesting things that cost us all more money in the long run?
Please please please lets have a referendum sooner rather than later
I have purchased my car with my money so I will fit a big exhaust to it if I choose to do so.
How about instead of the EU mugging everyone off they fix some potholes instead of making everyone's lives boring?
Everyone in the UK seems so miserable at the moment it seems immoral for the government to be tightening the noose on what we can and cannot do, what can and cannot have.

Sounds a bit like the Victorians worrying about the noise from passing trains causing cows to die and women to give birth early!
I think the Swiss have been like this for years havent they, and not a part of the EU, just sounds like an extension to the current regs of drive-by, where you just get a nice button on the dash to open up the valves when you want noise...
And to be fair with the trend of 'piping' noise into cabins of cars from an interior point of view you might not notice. I however will always want to hear the real sound of a V8 or anything else with more than 4 cylinders as loud as possible :-)
