I would love a W201 2.5 turbo diesel ad my daily driver.
Dream would be the 190D Blueefficiency that Mercedes built in 2009
I've just looked that up, now that is a real sweetheart. What a peach of a sleeper.

If I wasn't doing a 60 mile a day commute this would be very tempting.

Loving the shedtastic wheels
Ta Nico, they're off a C-Class so 6.5J instead of 6J and with an offset that fills the arches much better.
That must be the perfect transport from a little wineyard in provence down to the town centre to buy some baguettes! blah Windows down ( manually ofc), sunroof open - smiles all around

If it was a little bit cheaper I'd be in for that.

I reckon for fifteen grand you could have the perfect stable of cars, all from one period of Mercedes. Laydees and genteeelmen I give you my perfect, tackle anything garage:

1. 190e for local shopping, light day to day duties (i had one, 1990 on an h, blue black metallic)
2. E280 estate with 7 seats. For holidays, trip to dump etc a real swiss army knife of a car ( i had one, 1995 on an M, 115k, 8, yes 8 owners, blue black metallic)
3. 500sel for going posh, into london, off to swanky boutique hotels or soothing work stresses. (I haven't had one yet but my neighbour has, in blue black metallic, beige leather. He got married in it last year-better than a rotten old cream RR shadow)
4. 500sl for getting wind in the hair. ( i have one, £5k, 326bhp, lots of loveliness and in blue black... Well you get the picture!)

Not exciting but a bit like comparing a one night stand with a stunning model to marrying someone very nice looking but with depth, character, an interest in the same music as you, likes the same food etc etc. i guess i had better shut up now.

Nice SOTW.
I think I know what is missing from my fleet.

I run a r129 SL500, a c126 500 SEC (with a 5.6) and a s124 E300 diesel T. Must find a mint smoke silver 190 E Auto. 2.0 or 2.6?

I think for you the 190 cosworth 2.5 would make a very nice addition. Much respect for having 3 cars with a cylinder count of 22...

Or a 600 sec from 1993 onwards for that v12.. Yum

I saw a lovely gold one for sale for £795 with fairly low miles but was put off as a friend of mine bought one for similar money and something went wrong with the distributor or something electrical and the repacement part was something like £900 so he scrapped it. In retrospect, I should have taken the risk.

I'd quite like to swap the 126 for a 600 SEC / S600 coupé / CL600. Less beautiful but crushingly competent.

You're right about the Cosworth: I could do with something a bit hardcore. The idea never far from the back of my mind is to take a 190 E 2.6 manual and fit it up with the 3.0-24 motor.

Im considering taking a S124 280TE manual and hoy in a 36 AMG engine stroked to 4.0 litres and a complete electronic fuel injection... should be around 330 bhp/500 NM of torque from
a NA straight 6... bet that would haul ass wink

I've had the same idea. Anyone know of an example?

Is the manual gearbox from the 2.6 the same as that of the 2.0, or would a 2.0 manual donor not suit?

Not sure on the gearboxes 100% but I think they are the same. Pretty sure any gearbox of that age will fit any of the m102, m103 and m104 engines though. As for swapping the straight sixes, best done with a 2.6 to start with as the front slam panel and rad on the four pot models needs cutting and changing.

Brilliant shed and rightly acknowledged as a fantastic car by MB when at their pinnacle I think.

Had one of the very last LE models in the late 90's; finished in Bornite metallic which was lovely - wish we'd kept it in retrospect as in addition to relative rarity it was just a brilliant means of transport.

The only thing nobody has mentioned about Mercs of this era is the incredibly hard seats, guaranteed to give you a numb backside on a long journey! Must just have been me then.

Also, love the idea of a £15k all MB garage from the 80/90's. Probably one of the wisest ways to spend 15 bags on anything car-related. Concur completely with all the choices too.
