One of my brother's has has two of these, one auto one manual. Everyone should try one out, they have a certain aura about them. Downsides are fuel and they are quite hard to sell on/ not worth much at all.

There is an ultimate beard forum dedicated to 190s out there, worth looking at for advice etc.

Hi all,

This is my car, I feel deeply humble at all this fame.

Based on some of the comments I have clearly underpriced it as it is absolutely solid, no rust anywhere. Any worries on the relatively short MOT are easily remedied as I could put a fresh one on - it will sail through.

The car has only been owned by RAF Officers, originally it was the retirement wagon for an Air Cdre Surgeon who passed it on to his son when he got too old to use it. It was then bought by a Wg Cdr Engineer before I bought it 4 years ago.

Someone is coming to see it this morning so they could be getting a bit of a bargain.

Thanks for all the comments.

Fantastic shed my Dad had a 190e which I drove and I later bought a 2.5 5 cylinder diesel ok not that fast but sounded way better than a 4 cylinder diesel and was adequate and economical too.

He kept saying he wanted a "bog-standard" one and was teased unmercifully by the family for that, but took in good part when the initials BS appeared next on the 190 badge on the bootlid.

Good shed. Last drove one in 1990 (old man's car) and was very solid. If you're not in a hurry to go anywhere then you could do a lot worse

I've owned a 190E 2.3-16 and a 190D 2.0, both manual, and both bought & sold for less than a grand. They are amazing cars, but very heavy (the cost of being well built) so don't expect any decent pace from one, particularly an auto.
Despite SOTW being an auto, I like it.
Good find (after last week's pee poor effort) :-)

I purchased one for the Ex when she needed an auto, i loved it. Then when the ex left i told her she could either take the Mr2 or the Merc.

Heartless took the 190. frown

Also the most fun snow commute i have ever had was in that old auto Merc, hugely controllable drifts at will and no problem getting it back into shape. The only time i ever really appreciated what a good chassis it had was when there was snow about.

I miss that car.

Like it.

I'd be very tempted by one of these but would have to get a 2.6.

A 4 pot Benz just wouldn't cut it!

The other thing I thought of is that it's RWD, and auto - so maybe not the best winter car out there. I have bad memories of going to get petrol in my W114 250 2.8 Auto, and the thing not starting afterwards - then it started snowing. Getting home 2 hours later when the AA man had been & sorted me out was horrendous - no grip, back end kept going wide - I had to keep flicking the gearlever between N & D to control the beast! Come to think of it, it may have sat on cross-ply's... ;-)

Miss my old 2.5-16v

It may have been a solid chuck of a car but it still cost a fortune to run. Worth every penny as I now realise!

Based on the average PH'ers high regard for a used car with 4 matching premium tyres I'd guess this will be gone by noon today.

We had one of these, my Dad loved it. I was never so keen. It seemed ok, if a tad slow and unexciting to drive. I also didn't like the interior. The wiperblade was funky cool though, if a little disorientating at times... wobble

Colleague has just MOT'd an 133000 miler on a Gplate, one track rod end and ....well that was it no rust issues and it has leather and aircon all for £1200. Minor issue when first bought last year was an intermittant starting issue (ABS warning on start up)turned out to be a voltage relay and a simple fix.Dodgey rear window lifters is usually down to frayed cables within the lifter mech.Check the jacking points if there solid chances are the rest of the car is good.

I'm considering getting one of these for my girlfriend to learn in but I'm not sure I could justify the running costs. Is that an urban myth these days? How easy are the mechanical bits? Can a dabbler change the belt by themselves?
