So, sports fans, it looks to me like EVO ran a competition, and the provider of the prize has decided to send out an email to all those who participated offering them a "prize" for the sum of £199.

I doubt that EVO knew they'd do it, or consented to them doing it.

What chancers.

Harry - tear them a new one!!

I also sent this thread to the supercar company themselves. Think they will comment?
I sent an email and got a reply.

They claimed Evo asked them to add the runner up prizes, and Evo were fully aware and in agreement of the fee. He also claimed that the membership to their 'lifestyle club' was included as part of the prize (i.e. it was free and we are only paying for insurance/damage waiver), whereas I was told on the phone that this was part of the fee.

Evo are supposed to be posting a reply later.

my email from them indicates that the membership is part of the £199 fee: 'Also as a partner of EVO we have allowed this cover to be for a 12 month period giving the option to take further tuition in our cars or your own, exclusive access to MIRA and a tuition membership with Supercar Lifestyle for only £199 for 12 months.'

Anyone else enter the Evo comp to win some track tuition?

I seem to have won a runners up prize!

A FREE TUITION SESSION WITH EX F1 DRIVER IAN ASHLEY AND THE TEAM

As a runner up you will be coached on how to drive like a professional racing driver, starting off in BMW M3’s Ian and the team will coach both through practical and theory sessions the art of racing. This unique and exclusive session will give you an in-depth knowledge of what it takes to be in the shoes of Hamilton and Button and experience the high octane thrills of professional race drivers.

The session will include:

All vehicles
Safety briefing
Familiarisation laps
Safety equipment
Professional Instruction
Fuel
Track Time
Tea / Coffee and light refreshments
The session will run from MIRA’s secret Test facility in Nuneaton. This is where the likes of Jason Plato touring car champion and McLaren British GT3 team do there testing before their race seasons. This state of the art facility is also home to major manufactures such as Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley and the MOD where all prototype vehicles are tested and certified.
I think I'm justified in saying that this would start the alarm bells ringing.
There's a lot to suggest the e-mail was written by the YTS lad!

Mark just called and managed to make it worse.

Avoided answering question on how many people had won.

Didnt know who Harry Metclafe was.

Thought I was unreasonable to expect insurance to be included "if you won a car would you expect it to be insured?".

I was going to phone them today after sending a e-mail on Sunday and still not getting a reply, but I checked here first, seems it saved me some wasted time on the phone.

I spoke to some of their guys at a shopping centre over christmas (they were doing special offers before christmas) anyway after having a chat with them I asked about the insurance waiver as I know all of these days have them and was told it was £50 and that would cover you for the whole day no matter how many cars you drive, so where this £199 comes from I have no idea.

Hi Mark.

I already spoke to one of your representatives yesterday.

1. He congratulated me on winning the runners up prize before he knew my name.
2. He told me 20 people had won this - but over 20 people on a Pistonheads thread alone have already confirmed receiving the "prize".
3. I am very confident that rules on UK competitions have been broken, when to claim your prize, you have to spend £199 on insurance/membership.

When I called I wasn't told that the drive would be shared with 3 other people, but other people have been told this.

I have also been in contact with Harry Metcalfe who has stated he knew nothing of this. Surprising.

A number of people on this forum have expressed concern about the offer of a ‘free runners up prize’ as a follow-up to the evo competition to win a full days tuition with Supercar Lifestyle. I have subsequently spoken to a Director at Supercar Lifestyle to understand the nature of the runners up prize and the costs involved. The original winner has been picked and he will get a full day learning how to drive a GT3 car (This is completely free to the winner with no costs incurred)

Evo were not aware of the subsequent ‘prize’ that was going to be made available to all entrants, but we did share the entrants data with Supercar Lifestyle in return for running the original competition with us. That was included in the terms and conditions and is normal practice. I do think that Supercar Lifestyle could have worded their email better and should not have gave the impression that individuals had won a free runners up prize when in actual fact everybody who had entered was offered the same deal and there was a real cost to participate.

That said, the offer is a genuine one and for you to make a decision on whether to be involved or not. The four hour session (plus one hour for lunch) is based on three people sharing a BMW M3 with an instructor for the whole period, under the guidance of Ian Ashley. The four hours will include Driving, Observation and theory. The costs for the day (track time, vehicles, fuel, medic, refreshments, instructors etc) are being borne by Supercar Lifestyle and the £199 is to pay for car insurance, personal insurance, passes for 2 for MIRA (inc. guest), and membership of the Supercar Lifestyle Club. This covers people for a 12 month duration.

On behalf of evo and Supercar Lifestyle we would like to apologise to anyone who were given the false impression that this was a genuine 'free' runners up prize, but the offer of tuition is genuine and remains available. We would like to make it clear to everyone that there is a contribution to insurance cost of £199. Evo were not aware of the offer that was going to go out to all losing entrants and we would have requested Supercar Lifestyle to make the offer more explicit. I do not, however, believe that the offer is a scam and the day could be exciting.

With Best Regards

I'm another 'winner'. Don't think I'll be wasting 199 plus travelling costs on this shower. It's not a free session if you're expected to pay their operating costs.

Having been to mill brook on a free session organised by vauxhall I paid nothing extra. I'd expect the same to apply to any reputable company.

Offering a double first prize with no hidden costs would have been so much better.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Geoff.

Evo and Supercar lifestle have dropped a huge clanger here.

They have lied.
They have said people are runners up, when in actual fact they have spammed every single person who entered
As above Evo appears to have given details without proper reference to the data protection act.
Supercar Lifestyle have almost certainly broken rules pertaining to "prizes", and having to pay £199 to become a member is in my view a scam

Exact wording of the email from Supercar Lifestyle:
“Congratulations [name] you have won one of our runners up prizes!”
“To claim your exclusive prize please contact us!”

Now, if they had worded it as: “Exclusive special offer for entrants of the Evo competition” and given the price, then I’d have no problem with it. Presented as it was though, it’s a horrible scam. The intention is to deceive. Not cool, chaps.
