RE: Driven: Audi R8 V10 S-Tronic
Discussion
Whilst audi is often thought a premium badge it's not one in the world of supercars. Price and performance make it a great buy but it does lack the theatre and maybe brand kudos of something like the gallardo. To many buyers actually able to afford the car (not me) i'm sure that will be a positive but it isnt a car I dream of owning. Plus those black pieces on the side don't do it any favours for me when I see them in any colour other than black.

There is a lot of choice at this price point and I don't know if I could ever pull the trigger to that level for an Audi.
I think they're lovely though and just when I think they're a bit tired and dated, I see one on the road and am reminded as to the presence they have.
This. I would find it hard to believe that any genuine PH'er could resist not taking a second glance when one goes past. Even if the complete car isnt "your thing", there is bound to be some element of interest.I think they're lovely though and just when I think they're a bit tired and dated, I see one on the road and am reminded as to the presence they have.
I like them, but "circumstances wise", it could only be utilised as a 4th/5th car.

I'm going to wait for the Skoda version with non-damped grab handles, less equipment and a smidge less power... but for £50,000.
... shouldn't be long now...
But the Skoda Superblyrapid (tm) won't have "the headlights, which are now LED units front and rear". So I'll have to wait for an R8 to make it to SOTY!... shouldn't be long now...

I was driving down the M56 last week and saw a grey TT that had been modded to look like an R8. Blades and everything. I nearly had an accident, I was laughing so much. Epic, epic fail.
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
One of these lives near me. Big double take the first time I saw it!Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

I think problem my favourite of the current crop of "junior supercars", but if someone wants to give me one I'll have a manual, please.
Ill have a DSG and a V8 please. V10's are nice, but if I had to chose a V8 or a V10 I think I would go for the V8. I the sound is just more pleasing to my ears. Not sure I would have a manual either. Might have just been the car I drove but I found the manual a bit cumbersome to use. Fairly stiff and not be rushed through that tight open gaiter. I looks lovely granted, but a slick gear change it was not and that is slightly disconcerting when you are trying to slot the right gear home (without looking) whilst approaching a corner pretty fast and you sorta need your hands on the wheel! I dunno what Im trying get at here, it was just not as intuitive or as subconcious as it is in other cars I have driven. I had to actually think about what my left hand was doing.

Well I think I understood your point perfectly well. Audi is just a VW subsidiary that offers a premium brand was your point. I don't see many VW R8's or RS4's around. Yes Audi is owned by Vw but most brands are now owned by bigger auto manufacturers - it's just the way it has to be to make a profit.
But to respond to your second point yes, I'm sure plenty do buy Audi's for the badge but then I do think you get more than than you would with the equivalent Mondeo. As capable as the Mondeo is the interior design is not in the same league. This perception of quality counts for a lot.

The V8 is underpowered though, drive them back to back and there really is no comparison to the power of the cars and let's face it when you have a car that looks as good as the R8 you need it to have performance to match.V10's are nice, but if I had to chose a V8 or a V10 I think I would go for the V8. No that's silly, no car that does 62 in 4.3 secs is underpowered per se, slower than the V10 yes, down on torque yes, needs revs to get the best out of it perhaps, underpowered? No. I agree that as a "supercar" it's not as powerful as it should be but the V8 is a 911 C4S competitor and it stands up well against that, perhaps it's a victim of it's supercar looks Vs fast sports car pace?
Actually I think that's what you're saying
Before I start I own a 58 R8 which I love.
People are going on about running costs being affordable..... Well servicing certainly is. I had a Maserati gransport before and that was always around £1500 to service, where as the R8 is about £800
However tyres are very expensive, a pair of rears your looking at about £650, I believe the front discs and pads are around £1000.
So not that cheap to run, but great fun to drive. I look toward to when the v10 s-tronic cars comes down to sensible money second hand I will buy one.
