RE: Driven: Audi R8 V10 S-Tronic
Discussion
I've never really liked the R8's looks. Just does nothing for me. That is a subjective opinion of course, and I'm sure plenty of others will disagree, but I park next to a V10 quite often at my local railway station and I don't think they have any "exoticness" about them at all. It just looks like a stretched TT to me.
I could also never understand how the V8 was £90k when it had the same powerplant as the old RS4, which was £30k cheaper at the time, but that's a separate argument.

The V8 is underpowered though, drive them back to back and there really is no comparison to the power of the cars and let's face it when you have a car that looks as good as the R8 you need it to have performance to match.
agreed...what is needs is the twin turbo V8 install from the S6 suitably uprated.
I don't think it does compete with the 458 and Gallardo simply because of price.
Anyone who comes along and says "if you can afford 110k you can afford 180k" no...no you can't ...its a ridiculous assumption to make...it's over 50% dearer
Plenty of people hire purchase these cars,
A R8 V10 is roughly 2600 a month over 4 years with deposit of 8k , a 458 is more like 4000 with 12k down....so affording 2600 a month and 4000 a month are 2 people on completely different pay scales

Ill have a DSG and a V8 please.
V10's are nice, but if I had to chose a V8 or a V10 I think I would go for the V8. I the sound is just more pleasing to my ears. Not sure I would have a manual either. Might have just been the car I drove but I found the manual a bit cumbersome to use. Fairly stiff and not be rushed through that tight open gaiter.

So I am not the only one.. If a mate rocked up in one and said fancy a drive I would not be fussed either way. But if they rocked up in a new 911 I would climb over broken glass give it a blast. You hit the nail on the head re: parking at the station..... I also park my R8 at the station and use it most days' and. That's what it's all about, can't imagine parking a gallardo, 458 At the station car park. Its for people that don't want to shout "look at me I can afford a supercar" I could also never understand how the V8 was £90k when it had the same powerplant as the old RS4, which was £30k cheaper at the time, but that's a separate argument.

Cost of the engine is trivial compared to the rest of the car. Also, A4 platform is mass produced in a massive was compared to bigger all R8's.

horses for courses I suppose but if your criteria were my criteria I'd have had a 997 Turbo or Turbo S over one of these or better still a 997GT3 and used the spare cash to buy a nice practical daily driver to leave at the station so that people didn't know I drove or could afford a supercar! I'm on my second r8 - went from the v8 coupe to a v10 Spyder with tubi fitted... Firstly I love it! It's definitely not a car for the suits, in white and as loud as a lambo... But while I'd love to agree with your enthusiasm for it being sensible with two year servicing, it's marketing nonsense... I've had mine from new and cover about 3K miles per year over the last 2.5 years... And it's service light comes on bang on the 12 months. When I questioned Audi about this, they said it was because my mileage was so low! The short journeys means it needs servicing twice as fast... Funny, that wasn't the case for my 911!
So, yes, I love the car and I love it's reliability - that's the key over other exotics... The R8 won't let you down... But don't believe the servicing hype like I did... Oh and they confessed to me that my pollen filter doesn't really need changing every year but if they don't they can't turn the service light! So, it is £700+ per year service which is twice the 911, but it's a lot prettier...

When are Audi going to drop that "blade" on the side of the car?
It still looks as crap as the day they first introduced it and their stylists haven't been brave enough to kick it into the weeds where it needs to be.
I like just about everything else about the R8 but I would never buy one while they insist on that excuse for "styling".

997GT3 mmmmmm would love one of those, aren't they a bit pricier than a second hand R8 ( if you are talking about second hand) . I'd never buy a new R8 I think they are a little too pricey new, but second hand a V8 for low 40's seems like a relative bargain to me.There are so many cars out there I would love to have F430, Gallardo, 12C etc..... When I'm a millionaire (lol) I will have a barn full of exotic cars.

Kind of contradicts your username? its a brilliant car no doubt but I just dont want one in the way I would lust after a Lambo or hot 911.
