That's amazing considering the state of the roads, and border issues. Approximately 1000 miles per day is a lot, especially in a Fiat Panda. For most of us 600 miles in a day is sensible limit, even on good roads.
yes It's scary, frankly. biggrin We did the 250km Marsabit road in northern Kenya in 5 hours and I thought we were flying. That said the vast majority is on Tarmac.

hehe Where are the 4WD justification 'tards when you need them. 2WD Panda. Say it out loud. Superb. hehebow
They don't need 4WD for traction, and had beefed up the suspension etc which would be the other reason for choosing a 4x4. So, on a trip like this, 4WD becomes a hindrance as it reduces your range.

Good lads!

(though 10,000 trouble free off-road miles in a stock Land Rover would have been more impressive) hehe
I think someone on here did it, trouble free, in a 2006 (?) Range Rover. Great thread with lots of pics......
Anyone got a link?

Because a 2wd hatchback is of course the best tool for the job rolleyes

the whole point was to use a car that was NOT suitable, thus making the feat more impressive.

yes

When you think the 40-odd mph average doesn't include fuel stops let alone potentially drawn out border crossings they must have been making pretty decent progress when conditions allowed.

The bloke who did it in a L322 Range Rover was me! See link to website below.

10 days is incredibly impressive and must have taken enourmous organisation - it's the borders where you waste much of the time. It is correct that the roads are surfaced most of the way but serious potholes, pedestrians and animals are serious hazards to driving quickly. And using a boat to cross the Med is cheating a bit ;-)

Bloody good work, doing that many miles over only 10 and a bit days is some going.

2 of my good friends have taken part in the plymouth dakar and plymouth timbuktu rallies and from their experience I appreciate how hard, time consuming/expensive it can be to get through border controls in Africa.

please keep us posted if you plan any further trips.
