RE: Chris Harris video: ice driving

That looks fantastic. Good film, beautiful scenery, and good driving, with some interesting info on tyres (although I couldn't really see a difference in width between two of the tyres).
1750 per day is a little, cough, steep. 2500 is also a bit much for the excess considering there's very little to crash into. Do the motors blow up regularly?
Laponie is a little cheaper, but not that much. I'm sure there are some much cheaper options, like taking a Ryanair flight over, renting a RWD or 4WD car, and taking it on a lake yourself.

It doesn't have to be quite sooooo expensive, but classic 911's aren't cheap to run. It is undoubtedly ABSO-FECKING-LUTELY brilliant, brilliant fun though, (rather predictably) I'd rate it one of my best driving experiences ever. The grip those tyres pull out of the surface is astonishing though, and the angles of attack you can rescue using snow banks is, er, helpful
Couple of pics of the budget end of the spectrum (although tbf I think the Audi's 600bhp+ engine was quite cash heavy)
Always nice to see a vid of old 911's going sideways though!

He is making me regret not going out and getting a snowcross/ice racer this winter. It is indeed the most fun you can have in your car. You don't need rear wheel drive, you don't need studs, you don't need massive power, race equipment, etc. You just need to learn to drive your car. And snowbanks are really CEMENT banks, and do major damage, as much fun as it is bouncing off them (and occasionally flying over them). You generally take only the vehicles you don't mind wrecking, but there is always some optimist in a Carrera or a fancy-schmancy new BMW. It is the absolute cheapest form of motorsport!

If anyone's thinking of doing that, remember to take your tool kit. You should remove the front and rear bumpers as these are the first parts to detach themselves should you encounter a snow bank.I managed to get myself to Porsche Camp 4 in Finland a few years ago, Brilliant, I was amazed at what a Cayman could do on normal wintert tyre and the 911 was awesome as was the Finnish girl who scooped out the snow from infront of the radiators with a wooden spoon every time we stacked it!

Can I be friends with Richard Tuthill please? It gives a new meaning to 'friends with benefits'.
I seem to remember being at school with a son of one of the Tuthills (can't remember which). Really wish I'd made more of an effort now to be mates... Think my Dad was friends with Francis when he was dabbling in Mk1 Golf GTIs.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
