Everything about this sounds awful. I'm sure it will be stonking to drive, but it have to be something very special to overcome the bad points.

With 3k change to spend on the inevitable factory backed mountune kit I doubt it...
If I was 21 I'd consider an ST, but I just think the styling on the Clio is more grown up. I actually like the shape of it regardless of the 8 pages or so of bashing that follows every thread about it.

5 doors are convenient, and I think they look as good as three doors anyway.

I've had a Mountune kit before and while it was fast, it made the car a more unpleasant place to be. It was too loud and the hard suspension actually made it less usable on the road (though admittedly excellent on a track).

Also, by the time you add a Mountune kit, you're almost at the price of the Clio anyway.

Nice effort, that looks much better...funny that one forum post is all you need to show up Renault's entire design department. Post an email address, see if you get a job out of it biggrin

Nail -> Head. If this car was perfect, the people who are knocking it still wouldn't buy it because of the badge, or the cost or they simply don't like this class of car. It's quite ridiculous they've reacted so fiercely against it actually.

And it's actually 36kg lighter according to the press release.
Despite people raving about Renaultsport models on PH and the motoring press in general (they seem to win best hot hatch year on year) I was very surprised just how few they sell - if howmanyleft is accurate, Audi have shifted 3x more diesel powered TTs than Clio 200s. And there's just over 1200 RenaultSport Megane Mk3s (250 and 265) on the road, compared to 20+k Focus STs etc.

I'd bet if had a nice badge and in a subtle colour, suddenly it would look nicer (since everyone needs to impress clients to compensate for the fact they're a bit st at their job), better residuals, better build quality (I've been in a few VAGs - sorry but the "build quality" thing is all BS, and only BMW/Porsche seem to do nicer interiors). And people would actually buy a few, which is kinda the whole point of being a car manufacturer.

P.S anyone got any old vs new weight figure? How have they managed to shed weight too?

I see it as the hot hatch equivalent of the GTR, all gadgets and impressive numbers, but probably won't be very involving. Some people will like it, others won't, personally I'd rather change gears myself and etc, but then I didn't grow up playing Gran Tourismo.

....I would only I'm pretty sure Renault would never see it as they will be far too scared to look at comments posted on here.

Renault official figure for the new car is 1,204kg, without any options. In the press material they're claiming a 36kg weight saving over the outgoing car.

Oh, and my old 172 Cup was 1,021kg. And that comfortably did 40mpg on a run too. So much for progress eh? wink OK, it did try to kill me on occasion but that kept things interesting.

Cheers,

Dan

I'd echo those comments re: MPG, i've had lots of 172's and the cup versions would do very high 30's or touch 40 on a run with no real effort on the part of the driver. Seems that manufacturers blindly focus on lower engine capacities and turbos as the way to achieve better MPG. Be nicer if they focused on weight.

Not read the whole thread but is it thought there will be a lightweight 'Cup' version of the new model?

Safety regs have come a long way since then wink
You'd be better off if the worst happens in a new Clio than in an old one!

That was the old one which was n/a the new one is turbo so the kit will just be a remap and maybe a k&n to get it up to the clio's power. I suspect the kit will be circa £1500 so still cheaper than the Clio and in my eyes better looking.

I didn't like the old fiesta st and got the clio instead but for me now the tides have changed with the ford looking far more appealing to myself...

Clio 172 still has 4 airbags and is a 4* car it was very safe for it's time and still pretty good today.

Echo the mpg comments mine is used for hooning or sat in traffic jams mainly and still averages 36mpg even with a heavy right foot!

Last week I sat at 65/70 on a 150 mile journey and average 45.6mpg on the computer which really is impressive and probably better than this new "better" version will manage...

I've owned a few fast Clios and I will not be buying this, no manual gearbox, too many doors, smaller engine and turbocharged. No more ringing out the revs on track, oh and where do I fit the throttle bodies? No my ~20k will be going elsewhere, nearly new gt86 maybe.

It'll definitely be cheaper than the old 165/185 kits. The 185 was the best part of 2k.

That said, you won't see any of that money come re-sale, it certainly won't add that much value to the car. So I'd rather just stuck with an "out of the box" car to begin with. I wasted a lot of money on the 185 kit, it added no value on trade-in, unless of course I was to sell privately, but that wasn't really an option.

I think the kit will add a bit of value as for me I think a high % of the fiesta ST's sold will have them fitted as the 180bhp is a bit weak and it will bump it up to the sort of power it should produce.

For me I would like to pick one up 3 years old for circa 8-9k and give it a cheaky remap up to maybe 220bhp think it could be a great allrounder having driven a stock mk7 zetec s and finding it a very nice car to drive!

Wonder how long before the sound generator thingy is hacked and
becomes customisable? I'll have one that sounds like a BRM V16 please.

That actually looks pretty good. Shame on Renault for having so much opportunity and still coming out with something that looks utter st.
