Here's my G reg 1.4 CJ running on Xsi wheels... at the 2004 Pistonfest! Note the added Essex boy bottom left with the fag in his hand! My mate at the time (both car and friend have been replaced!)

The history of Peugeot:

Nothing worth talking about... 205 GTi ...nothing worth talking about... 106 GTi ...nothing worth talking about... infinity....

Great little cars. Here's a non-GTI....

Mi16 perhaps? Just going by the wheels - and the fact the front brakes seem to be somewhat larger than original?

They're good cars the 205 and I like them, but to write they "made Peugeot's name" as a driver's car is just hyperbole. Peugeot had a long reputation for superb rally cars - think of the 504.
I would argue it made thier name in more ways than one it saved them financially.

Also while the ealier rally cars were good the T16 really made a ruckus as they spanked the audis.

While everyone loves the gti's I'd spare some thought for the base models too very robust and reliable cars in my experience I've had both a base model and gti(currently for sale) wink

I've got a 1.1 5dr and a 1.6 CTi. Both are great. The 1.1 has a very light front end, and in my opinion is better for driving around town in. We've had it in the family since new so it hasn't been abused.

The CTi is also fun but more so on the B road, and it is great with the roof down. It has an aftermarket tailpipe on (I know, rest of the car is nice and standard though) and it sounds great with the roof down especially going through a tunnel. Unfortunately it has been thrashed its whole life and everything needs replacing which is costing me an arm and a leg at the moment.

I do want to get a 1.9 GTi though. I inquired about insurance a month ago, but due to my young age the premium was double what it is for my CTi, so I guess I'm going to have to wait a couple of years first frown Great cars though.

I believe some of you already know my opinions on 205s on here. I won't bore you with the umpteen pictures and stories. wink

Suffice to say, I've still got my GTI, and hope to never have to sell it.

30 years old and it can still surprise a hell of lot of modern machinery.

My first I owned in 1991 1.6.

My current ride I bought when I turned 40 1.9.

I doubt I will ever sell it.

Where is the best place to get one restored?

The 205 XS was also a very good car, at the same time I had mine (XS) my best friend had one and his girl friend had one, we just loved them.

I thought the normal 1.9 Gtis were launched in 87 with circa 130bhp? When they got a cat in later life they were less bhp - I think they also used lesser powered 1.9s in Ctis and Gentrys in later life.
The 1.6gti went from 105 to 115 around the launch of the 1.9 Gti
Yo are correct. 1.6 started with 105bhp, then increased to 115bhp. 1.9 started with 130bhp then was reduced with cat version in early 1990's

That is sexy. I had both once upon a time, even though the 1.6 felt better balanced, you can't beat the 1.9 on sheer lunacy!!!

They are a great looking car no doubt, but I still think the CRX 1.6i-16 is a better and very under rated car.

I can respect these for their rally use (driven by one of my fav lady drivers).

However I still don't see the appeal. If you 'have' to drive a hatch, then fair enough. If not this weeks SOTW is far more interesting and desirable IMO: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Hmm part of the appeal is, I guess, that it's fun to drive yet it doesn't look out of place nearly anywhere. It can take 4 and some luggage, it's a very sensible family car (although getting quite old now...).

I do have respect for the MR2 but it's a mid-engined two seater. If you have a passenger with you you've got nowhere left to leave your coat.

This is without doubt one of the best normal type mass market styled cars ever made, it really was outstanding in its time and still looks great now, i test drove one against the 309gti and while it looks better the 309 was the better drivers car and thats what i bought.
