Come on guys, this is just a small part of Peugeots history really. The 205 GTI was ok at best. What they should really make more of, are these -

STDT going from the rather tasteful interior Peugeot felt would look good for some reason. I have one of those, think I enjoy it more than my old 1.9, for some reason. Can't put my finger on why, though.
YES!!! I'd forgotten about those. They had the 405 GTX wheels originally, they had the GTi suspension as well? Went like billio and gave good economy too?

Great little cars. Here's a non-GTI....

Mi16 perhaps? Just going by the wheels - and the fact the front brakes seem to be somewhat larger than original?

My mum had a 205XE, all of 954cc so not much power but great handling and adequate for a new driver. On my university sandwich year there was an XS and a Gti 1.6 amongst the pool cars, I always preferred the XS and even tried to buy it when it came up for sale but they wanted too much.

I never could live with it's natty red carpet, red seat belts, horrific dashboard, flimsy build quality, seizing rear torsion bar and appalling traffic manners, let alone the 18mpg I used to see on a spirited drive! A horribly ugly engine to look at under the hood too.
You, Sir, could be describing an MG Maestro 1600 hehe . Spotted 'cos I own one cloud9 .

My dad had an early (first registered January '84) 205GR, which I was pretty taken with aged 13 smile . It was replaced by an MG Metro, then a 205GTI 1.6 (when I was 17)...

The non-GTI 205s still have merit, the Phase 1.5 205SR 1400 was more accelerative than the GTI 1.6 in fourth for example - and as for the diesels and, especially, turbo diesels compared to contemporary models... thumbup

I drive a 309SR - basically a slightly bigger 205 with a 1600 carb engine as fitted to 205 autos - and while it's not a fast car it shrugs off bumpy roads like a magic carpet, and it has very good economy (47mpg on last year's touring holiday) and will slog away in the higher gears until the second coming cloud9 .

Bit confused by this thread, as the 205's 30th Anniversaire in the UK isn't until October? confused(Admittedly, the 205 was launched in France in October '82.)

I had a white 1.6 about 3 years ago that was bought for £400. It had been standing outside next to a lock-up for 2 years and most of the electrics had been taken off the engine as it just wouldn't run. I replaced the electrics and broken trim, cut and polished and, after eventually calling in the help of a forum guru, solved the running problem and ended up with this.

Nice looking little car but it was stroppy as a day to day proposition. To be fair to it, somehow it passed an MOT even though the engine was clearly past it's best and rust had finally taken hold. When the rear bumper fell off (about a week after the picture above was taken) I decided to get rid.

Replaced it with a ratty old Puma which drives like how I expect a decent 205 would but has a clutch and drive-train that isn't a pain around town.

Still miss the way the GTI looks though. Still fresh after 30 years.

Fantastic colour combination - bright green with the GTI red bits.

It's surprising how many 205s are still around. A chap up the road from my parents has quite a collection of sub £1k examples. His latest purchase is a 35k miles 1.1 5 door in flat blue, it has a ride quality that's quite foreign to much larger cars made today.

I had a 1.6 GTI in 1991, it was a 1986 'C' reg. I was 19 at the time.

No power steering, no electric windows or anything. I loved it.

It was replaced by a Renault 5 GTT........ That was soooo unreliable mad

The early 1.9's had 115, and the early 1.6's 105 bhp. They upped the power to 115/130 bhp within a year or two I think.
Not quite. The early 1.6's had 105bhp, which was then increased to 115bhp. The 1.9 was always 130. Until they fitted the CAT to the 1.9 which decreased it to 125 or 120, something like that.
Then again, the Turbo Technics had 185 getmecoat
Sorry guys, I just want it back Badly. hippy

An '89 205 xs was my first road car when I was 17 in '94. Lovely standard example with 46k when I got it. Never was a car better treated. Kept it a year then sold it to a mechanic in work who wrote it off.

Brother also had a 205 as his first car. Young people today just don't desire peugeot's like they used to.
