I have owned and still own one of these cars for over 21years. They are amazing over a country road, nothing even comes close to one of these. Even had the privilege to drive a brand new 911 and it still wasn't as enjoyable as a 205gti.
Had two 1.6's and a 1.9 even had an mi16 conversion but I now only had a 80k 1.9 turbo technics version. Only gripe is that I'm now middle aged and don't get much time to enjoy it. But one thing is for sure, I will never sell it, because I can't find anything more exciting to drive over country roads.

It's a well known fact that true pistonhead status cannot be granted until you have experienced lift off oversteer in a 205!

I've had three 205 GTi's now. A red 1.9, a white 1.6 but the daddy was the genuine Dimma Mi16'd throttle bodied stripped out red monster. I loved that car.
Recently had the chance to swap my 200sx for a low mileage miami blue one with a GTi-6 conversion. I um'd and ah'd for ages about it but was persuaded not to by the other half. And friends. They know how much time, effort, money blood, sweat and tears I'd put into the build of my Nissan. And I haven't actually driven it yet since I completed the build!

K983 DAC, where are you now?! A white, rather lovely 1.9 whichI truly adored. I don't understand people who said the Mk2 Golf was better as I had one at the same time as the Pug. If you like great steering and handling, the 205 was peerless.
The Golf was more practical, better made (thought the Peugeot was faultlessly reliable in 40k miles) and safer on the limit. But it really was dull to drive.
My third car at the time was a Caterham and I could honestly say that the Pug was not far behind in terms of pure driving joy.

I experienced that in 2005 iirc, I bought a colleges 1.9 GTi for £750 and I F'ing loved it. It was black and unmolested (apart from a tow bar 
) with red carpets Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres. I loved the smooth gear changes and the tiny delicate accelerator pedal and the heavy but oh so precise steering. I live in Harlow where there are a few roundabouts. One morning at at about 05:30 on a Sunday I tried to take one as fast as I could, I broke hard into the roundabout, hard on the right with pedal down , understeer, f
k lift off, ffffuuuccckkkk as the front wheels bit into the tarmac and the light back end stepped out of line

t myself as I nearly spun 360 but that event taught me so much about the differences between FWD and RWD etc and the way you steer a car with the throttle.I'm so glad I had one
Had my 205 coming up 4 years now, absolutely awesome and will never sell it. Bought as a 1.6 its now running 190bhp from a fiddled around with 16v motor - good fun but i'm now thinking about going back to standard! Or i could just buy a standard one to have as well now...

These cars are the epitome of the hot hatch genre. The build quality is typical of 1980s French cars, the drivetrain is not ideal for commuting in heavy traffic but get an open road and there is no other small car like it, it's contemporaries and modern cars included.
Yes, you will be left standing at the lights by a modern turbo diesel but outright speed/acceleration is not what these cars are about. The delicate balance they have is still a delight 25 years on and the 208 GTI will never replicate this although the car looks promising.
I'm obsessed with mine (a late 1.9 GTI cat example) and even with a big power difference over my modern high performance car, I still prefer the overall feel of the 205.

I had a Red 1.6 Pug GTi for a brief period. It was an awesome little motor. Very involving to drive and always put a smile on my face. But then, knowing that there was a faster more powerful version, the 1.9, out there became difficult to live with. No matter how many times I looked at the stats on paper and tried to convince myself that 15bhp and 1 second difference in 0-60 time was nothing to loose sleep over.......but power corrupts. I went to view a 1.9 GTi. A true shed! The bloke selling it had puchased a S13 Nissan 200SX and wanted shut of the Pug. He chucked me the keys and said I could take it for a spin. I remember it being a large bunch of keys (compared to my key, key fob and alarm), and for good reason. The doors and boot hatch were locked by individual Yale locks. I tried to look like I was still interested in purchasing it, but it was difficult. Anyway, took it for a spin, loved it.....totally different to the 1.6...more effortless power...more, dare I say, mature. I made my excuses and left, determined to find a tidier 1.9. And what did I end up with? An R5GTT, one of only 2 cars that I regret selling. Now there's another story!
