RE: Tell Me I'm Wrong: Mercedes SLR McLaren
Discussion
Always wanted one since I sat in a lightly used one in what used to be Bentley/Sytner (http://goo.gl/maps/3lnLO) at the roundabout in Knutsford. When the very attractive saleswoman asked if I was "in the market" I replied that I'd probably prefer a Carrera GT and she offered to take my number as she knew of a black one locally that may be available
They did me the (coincidental) honour of moving it across the showroom to make space for an RR Phantom and that sealed it for me on the "as soon as I win the lottery..." list.

After being loaned one at Donington as a Safety Car,I have to say I thought it an excellent drivers car. In fact it was very easy to drive it very quickly with little effort. The then owner told me it should be the quickest car on the circuit that w end,we had Historic F1s there as well as the usual stuff. He was more than willing to find out if this was true or not, pleased to say he was correct,by two seconds!!
Would I have one? Too bloody right I would. [if plans permitted]

Only had mine for about 7 months, just couldn't gel with it.
What didn't you like about it? One of my fantasy cars.
Fast like.

Over engineered underperforming crap the German auto industry shuves us. Collectable? Yes. Would I love to experience one? Yes. Would I love to see one? yes. Not the first or last car I would look to buy. I just think it's crap.
A car that misses the point. McLaren? I'll take a cheaper MP$-12C. That's real automotive equipment and history.
Mercedes has done better with their GT1 car and CLK DTM.

Disagree. The SLR has way more character than the 12C and much better real world usability than the GT1 or the CLK DTM.Mercedes has done better with their GT1 car and CLK DTM.

Ok SL55 AMG is a V8 but surely the SL65 AMG of the same era is more of a comparison. I have owned an SL55 pace car version and now own a 65. The 65 would give the Mclaren a real run for its money 211 mph (derestricted) and 11.9 quarter mile. I love the 65 and wish I could afford the new one circa £200,000. At around £38 - £40,000 a 2004/2006 65 is in my view a bargain, if you can find one. The running costs are not cheap but certainly not SLR money.
The R320 (pre terrible facelift) SL65 is a V12 TT of course. But if I was looking at them I'd probably try and find a Brabus S Roadsterhttp://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/brabus-biturbo
I like the SLR. But the width of the thing, horrible interior (No sat nav screen!) and grabby brakes put me off it nowadays.
