I disagree on the value point. If it's as good as it looks, then it's very keenly priced. The values of the etas are definitely on the up and there's a lot if interest in them. And with only 80k miles on the clock, I doubt that one will hang around for long.

I share your view on the box though. Perhaps BMW thought people wouldn't understand the rev range and power delivery if they'd sold it as a manual.
I suppose it depends on what you want the car for.

It would be a shame to use it on a day to day basis, if that were the case a decent E34 5er would be superior in every way (imo) - am sure you could get a very nice example for 3k. f only for a w/e car, a E28 528i manual makes more sense verus the 525e.

Similar phenomenon seen with E30s at the mo. Decent original 316is/318is are getting priced quite high because of their condition. Question is, who are they going to appeal to? Too nice to use for a daily driver (esp if you consider the price) but also not exactly interesting enough to appeal to the weekend driver who would rather save up for a 325i Sport.
You only have to buy a copy of Practical Classics to see that people buy and cherish all sorts of odd stuff for all sorts of reasons. These etas are gaining almost cult status, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone bought it as their weekend toy.

Your 316/18 example is interesting. I bought an e30 320i as my daily driver last year. For me, at that time, "daily driver" meant a car to do about 4k miles a year in, largely pootling around London or short motorway trips. The little 320, considered by some to be the runt of the litter, fulfilled the role perfectly and I was very sad to see it go.

For what it's worth, I think a 525e would make a cracking daily driver. You could put 20k miles on that one over the next two years and (provided you look after it) get your money back at the end.
Agree, people do love odd things!

We had an E28 for a while (525i iirc) and I ran an E34 (520i manual) for a year. The E34 was superior in every way tbh. For a daily grind & motorway slog the E34 makes more sense.

For an E28 daily driver, this looks fun cool

The e34 certainly feels more modern.

But I did 2,500 miles over a fortnight in an e28 last year (albeit, one with 286 bhp) and enjoyed every minute of it.

Indeed, here it is... (ETA: apologies for photo-whoring) wink

That's a fantastic little 5 Series (note the I used, 'little' !)

It would be dwarfed by a modern F10 5 Series, but it looks just right. Nice colour (Cirrus Blue, I think).

Totally original and worth the £3k they are asking.

A lot of these bottom ends were used on the E30 325i's to bore them out to 2.7 IIRC, coupled with a 6 branch, makes for a quick tool.

And yes, this one is just for cruising and pottering around in. If you want something you can thrash, go for the M535i variant!

There's a chap on here who has winter tyres (on Alpinas) on his E28. Looked awesome in the snow. cool

PS Never apologise for photo-whoring an E28 M5.

The 525e is quite an interesting thing and great fun to waft around in. You miss out on the top end performance of the 528i, but overall I prefer them to the 525i. They're not slow - they feel faster than their on paper figures would suggest.

That's quite strong money for an E28, albeit a lovely original one in good condition. I would have thought a manual box would be needed to make full use of the economy benefit tbh.
I thought all 525e models had the 4 speed auto?

You have to remember that the e28 came out in 1982 and was pretty ok for its time but not a real departure from the previous model 5 series. Turbine smooth engine, nicely built but a bit 'wooden' and a bit slow to react to throttle input. My folks had a 520i lux and a 316i. I was allowed to use both when I was 17 but would never pick up the keys to the 520i. It felt too slow. The 316i was a hoot to drive.

Things really changed with the E34- it was super modern and made the e28 feel extremely antiquated.

Had two of these eta's one after the other many years ago ,
B443BPP ? was a beige one with brown interior ( nice combo ) ,
may dad had it after me and he only sold it on when it failed mot on fuel pipes corroded , had done 171k and did not use a drop of oil.
Had E328XUR after that , metallic blue with a blue interior , was very clean example as was owned by a Dr in Welwyn Garden City who noted down every little thing he did to the car , he even kept all the old parts he changed.
Was a great car to drive on long motorway runs , quiet and very comfortable for me driving and my passengers.

Zinabar Red, same as my hopeless 518i.

I seem to recall a number of these being broken for the engine or its parts.
An interesting little side note in BMW's history but a bit of a dead end IMHO.
Talking of 320's I picked up a mint 60k 320i SE last year and love it.

These always remind me of Wayne the cockney wide boy from "Auf Weidersehen Pet" as he had a red one, anyone remember that, one of my favourites as a kid.

That'll be me then! :-)

I don't actually have winter tyres (if it is me you are thinking of) as my point in the other thread was that I make do without considering I cover 300 miles a week just on the commute.

I bought a very clean fully restored car as my daily driver and have covered 13k miles in it since May last year. As with anything, look after it and it will still look a million dollars even with regular use. They are simple to work on and very robust on the whole. Just buy one where someone has already spent a fortune on cutting out all the rust and it's win win. I paid not that much less for my car than the advertised 525e so I would say it is priced well. I was at first sceptical about using it all year round but it feels so good to drive and doesn't cost the earth to maintain. Mine is only a 520i but the condition made it too good to pass up. I was originally planning an engine transplant of some sort (M52) but I'm not going to bother now as the engine was also rebuilt and is silky smooth. Downside (if you can call it that) is that it averages about 28 MPG with my use which isn't that different from the XJ8 3.2 it replaced! But as mentioned, in it's day this was a very advanced, economical powerful car. I had a 525e 13 years ago which was also very clean 1 owner car but had a problem somewhere due to the 15 MPG it averaged!! Had head cracking trouble so it was sold on for bugger all. I'd love to try a mechanically good 525e though.

More pic whoring :-)

One of the directors at the firm I worked for at the time had one of these. He must have ordered it without test driving it because he never stopped moaning about how gutless it was. We had fuel cards in those days so I don't think he would have been worried about economy.

Have you thought of the other side of the scale, the Turbocharged E28 Alpina B7?
This is one of 3 Alpinas for sale, slightly more than the 525e at 34,00CHF. But then you have the choice of this '85 below, an '80 B7 turbo or a '86 6 series B9 Turbo.

This might get you in the mood and ellaborate on what makes it.... here

I was just about to say that about the bottom end.

Next door had a C Plate 528i in that exact colour combo and those wheels, I was 15/16 and it felt fast in its day, if not quite as fast as the other Neighbours SD1 VDP EFi.

I could be wrong but I don't recall any Sony radios being available as part of the choice of radios which were fitted in the E28's. I believe all were Blaupunkt Blue Spot models.

You could have a Blaupunkt New York or Toronto in your lowly 518i if the funds allowed you!!!

I love e28's and have driven quite a few when they were current,I'm afraid the only way an eta would stay with a 528i would be when the latter had blown it's auto-box and was being reversed home. In their day 528i's were fast cars and it's only because of the subsequent 535/M5 that people seem to think they were just a 2.8 Granada alternative. My brief experience of a very late E reg 525e Lux (when my 528 was in for a new 'box) put me off BMW's for 20 years ,it wasn't just slow it was embarrassingly so, because it 'looked fast' and in those days no one cared about economy as company car fuel cards weren't taxed!
