I'd rather a nippy estate than a Hot hatch or fast MPV any day of the week. My first step on the ladder is my Leggy 3.0r Sportwagonthingy, looks that could bore a Toyota Carina owner, but with 245 horses and the noise of a 911 at full chat.

(Still miss my old e36 non-evo though...)

In my head, the original Honda Aerodeck was a lot sexier than it seems now. Must have been the pop-up headlamps, I'm a sucker for those!

Nah, they're great-looking cars, like everything else a bit of suspension and wheel can help!

looking at that makes me want one actually.

I've got an Alfa Romeo 156 sportwagon and i just love the sleeper style of fast estates, people just don't expect it and it's even better when you've got the jump on someone in their 'sporty' 3 door. Don't get me wrong though, some cars should always be 3 door, the clio and hot hatches of that size are a prime example, but hot estates can be just as good to drive.

Once owned a Civic VTI-S Aerodeck. Nothing remarkable about the car and didn't have a patch on the E30 325i Touring I replaced it with.

I love estates and their practicality before image - not been without one for more than 25 years, originally a banana yellow Citroen GSA, then the ultimate - a Citroen CX25 DTR Turbo 2 Safari (longest car name in automotive history?)....very fast and with all that torque the ability to overtake 10 vehicles in one bite on a normal A-road (something you can still do on some of the roads here in Lincolnshire...)

Recently I have acquired my second Vauxhall Omega estate: don't laugh - this will take a full-size household door behind the front seats and the tailgate closes - but this time my Omega is the 3.2 V6 auto Elite estate, an on-demand road-burner when required, bought for very little money with massive service history, rot-free and immaculate - absolutely love it but contemplating an LPG conversion to mitigate the drink problem..... these are fast becoming extinct so move now if you like the idea......

Everybody hold the phone. If you want a quality estate you can't get much better than a 1971 Morris traveller estate. 1000cc, rwd, tax exempt... Truely is the way forward

A boot full of dogs prefer an estate to a hatch. Mutts currently pinned to the back hatch of a 9-5 Aero estate, best £1500 I have spent in ages. Did the civic VTI estate years ago but never did click with it. Done a Volvo T4 estate too, seemed to have traction issues that the 9-5 doesn't. Big fan of fast estates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Stupid thing to write on here, of course you will... but, I think this pre-dates the Honda Aerodeck. Like it or loathe it, it is a factory built Sports Estate...

Love quick estates, especially as our E36 328i sailed through it's MOT this morning.

Brother had the Civic VTi Aerodeck in the late 90s and it was fantastic. This one has to be worth a punt for SOTW:

'Un-burtsable' is the word I most frequently hear with regard to VTEC engines, but surely the must be a few s in the armour to worry about at that sort of mileage?

Completely agree... only mine's in E46 330D format. Same spec as the saloon, but a bit more space and there's the 'sleeper' factor I quite like about it too.

Hell no, there was NOTHING which looked like that at the time, it was completely unique and cool-as-fk.

Not seen one for eons - shame really...

Here's my theory...

New car sales are mostly made up of company cars. Most schemes, certainly in my experience, won't let you choose a 3 door car. A lot force you to have an estate, that's why this is happening and it's not a good thing.

Really? I'm talking about humble stuff, where the choice is between a Focus or an Astra, the type of car supplied to field engineers as an alternative to a van.

I think yo've hit the nail on the head there! At the time, it was a breath of fresh air compared to cavalier estates etc.. I haven't see one for years either. From howmany left.co.uk it seems there are only about 100 still on the road :-(
