Umm I think it was back in what 1992 when the Viper was first launched. At the time a more expensive Honda NSX would only have had 276hp or less if equipped with an auto. Yet still weighed 1365-1405kg.
Yes but the NSX never had the a sort of uber-muscle car inage that the Viper does.

So the OP car has the 450bhp engine then, rather than the 400bhp stated in the article? As a GTS that would make more sense to me.

Ad says it's a 2001 Viper GTS, in which case:

Engine Type OHV 20-valve 8.0 Liter V10 w/SMFI*
Engine Size 488 cid/7990 cc
Horsepower 450 @ 5200 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 490 @ 3700 RPM

The 400hp was the original R/T...

I think I'll take my 400bhp, 5lt beauty over this any day. Makes the m5 look frugal and a complete bargain- 5 seats and body panels that aren't going to fall off! Err who would buy this at that price?!
LOL.

Negativity is hilarious. These cars are legendary and rightfully so.

I think the GTS was 450hp and according to Carfolio 1531kg. I think they are pretty stout stats even today, let alone at the time. I admit 1531 is maybe a little porky for a 2 seater. But it really wasn't sold at the same price point as many other Euro performance cars.

A Brit muscle car like the Jag XKR only had 370hp and 1800+kg or so to haul about for instance and I don't think there was a massive difference in price either.

Yes but will I get 30+ mpg? Is there a diesel option?
I'm sure 30+mpg is possible. Longer-term averages seem, perhaps unsurprisingly, less compelling: http://www.fuelly.com/car/dodge/viper (don't forget to set it to UK units).

Personally I'd be more concerned about the missing back seats, to say nothing of the doors to go with them. Perhaps those were an optional extra.

Exactly. To suggest that this car lacks bhp is rather silly.

Its each to his own smile

The Gen 2 (as shown above) made 450HP from stock, easily updated to gain more. The Yellow Viper in the video is supercharged, hence the extra noise and produced around 600hp. The exhaust runs down the sill and the cats sit where you would put your leg as you step out of the car, hence you can surprise yourself on exit. Updated cats solve this along with helping greatly with the cabin temperature.

To own, they are scary punchy, awesomely engaging to drive and can be driven great distances with ease. They do return up to 30 mpg, in fact a trip to Germany a few years back I used only a tank of fuel to drive rapidly to the ring from our hotel about 50 miles away (A-type mountain roads), four laps of the ring and a longer drive home and I had plenty of fuel left. A day circling the top gear track almost non stop at The Supercar event is a tank of fuel also (compared, allegedly, to three tanks for the McLaren MP4C).

Mine is a part of the family, we all love him and even the neighbours forgive his noise.

The engine IS an EIGHT litre V10, and has been know to put out near 1000bhp reliably.
The US, the market this car was obviously designed for, has a rich heritage in tuning, and Dodge gave that market a car that was quite a handful (if articles are believed) standard, but could be turned into batst-mental with relatively little modding.

It has been rumoured that the ball of fire over Russia was actually a twin-turbo Viper that spun off on the Sam Houston Race Park.

The ultimate car on the first Gran Turismo, remember racing and racing for ages to buy a blue (with white stripes) GTS and then when I finally did get one, I couldn't drive it because I was young and didn't realise holding the X button all the time meant it'd spin the wheels and constantly spin round and round.

Add in the Oreca cars sweeping all before them in great liveries and the original Viper is still something I'd love to own one day. Wonderfully cool looking/sound things and what isn't epic about saying you've got an 8 litre V10?

1531kg for an 8 liter 450hp 2 seater car isn't that heavy, if you compare it to a lightweight 380-ish hp TVR Tuscan at 1160kg...

They are easy to tune. I put Belanger headers on mine - as well as high flow cats to keep the sills cooler and 3 inch Corsa cat back pipes. Can't say if it's true or not but Belanger claim 50hp at the wheels with their headers.

I've driven mine to Sweden. A reasonably leisurely drive saw easily 30mpg.

Can't help thinking that 50bhp per litre (or maybe 56 if it's the GTS) is a bit tame.

Yes, the overall package is impressive (at least for the bystander), but as usual for the Yanks, mechanical inefficiency is made up by adding cubes

Still a bloody impressive car though - I remember a pair of heavily modded Vipers at a Ten of the Best reaching around 200mph at the end of the mile run - gorgeous sound - a crowd favourite

I love TVR's, but there is no point comparing them to be honest. The TVR was not US Type Approved and stood no chance of being so. Most of it's weight saving was due to not needing to meet the same criteria as most others or production standards. If you made the TVR meet these I suspect it'd likely weight more.

John Hennessey likes working with American cars he says because 'there is always plenty left on the table'. European cars are generally close to their limit whereas US cars tend to be very conservatively tuned. The US market is built around providing a basic car at a low cost, then there is a plethora of aftermarket options to update, change, customise the car as you see fit, hence few US muscle cars are the same secondhand. We simply don't have that market here so not considering that misses the point of the cars in their market.

Saw one of these on the way to an event at Silverstone a couple of years ago. Bright yellow with black stripes. Nothing has ever looked so over-sized and out of place whilst symultaneously looking amazing and filling the air with a throbbing exhaust note that could be felt several cars back!

Definitely in my dream garage, I'd like a red coupé with the rear wing and white stripes, please!

Really the cayman comparison is a load of ste.

The Dodge would be an event, something special to sit in and then pootle around in while trying not to exit backward into a hedge. We may as well resort to saying that a Countach wouldn't see which way a Clio 182 went on a country road as consider this Cayman bks.

Let's forget performance in raw terms and think about the way a car like this makes us feel. In my case very, very scared and very, very alive. I like them.

That said I'd take my Viper V10 in a Dodge Ram and pay less for it.......

I actually prefer the natural looks of the standard RT/10 car over the GTS
