RE Chris Harris video: new Cayman
Discussion
Wonder how many of the haters have actually ever driven a Cayman.
Have owned a 996, , plus a 997 GT3.1, yet after a 24 hr test drive of previous shape Cayman S, in my humble I believe it to be the best handling car i have driven to date. This new one seems even better
That said , I also would struggle to spend near £60k on a decent spec new one. Now if I was sensible I would buy a £25k SH one from OPC with 2 years warranty......... But who wants to be sensible
Dave.

It looks quite a potent performer. Certainly doesn't look overly bloated like the 911 or offerings from Ferrari.
Custard yellow is not a good look and the interior looks clinical but uninviting.
It sounds quite nice on the over-run but ultimately with the 'click up, click down' gearbox and electric power steering (which i've yet to drive a car with it that has good feel) it doesn't seem that challenging.

I wonder where you're finding these "haters". I certainly haven't noticed any on any thread about this car on PH (with the possible exception of smilo996, and I can't make up my mind whether he's serious or not). Some questioning why Porki are going with a double clutch gearbox? The PDK double clutch was a Porsche idea anyway? They developed it for the racers - Porkiphiles will know the number of the race car and the type of underwear the racers used. But they had issues with it being a static setup. This was due to the 80's computer technology. VW made it work in a roadgoing car as an auotomated manual gearbox.
As for the new Cayman - I like it. It isn't trying to be a pseudo 911 looking car. A good step in the right direction. Thank god the stylist at Porsche realise that not every car has to look like a 60's 911. They have more depth than that.
The Pippa Middleton aspect of this though Chris is will they do a RS version of this with the GT3 RS engine rather than the normal Porsche procedure of a carbon wing, red fabric door pull and stipey stickers they normally do?

Chris, you've no doubt seen the GT3 pics and expose on Rennlist.
The guy who posted spoke of a completely new PDK. Is this the same as in the Cayman or entirely different from the rest of the range?
Another very enjoyable video, I'm looking forward to the arrival of the R....
Has anyone posted the pics/specs of the 991 GT3 on here yet?The guy who posted spoke of a completely new PDK. Is this the same as in the Cayman or entirely different from the rest of the range?

I can't find a thread in the search and don't remember seeing one?
Would any 981 Boxster owners (or anyone who's driven this new Cayman) who have also driven/owned an S2 Elise care to comment about their feelings on each?
You here about the new Boxster/Cayman having excellent handling, or as one poster above said 'best handling car he's ever driven' but I'd just like to understand what that means.
I'm picking the Elise because I own one and they're considered to be one of the better handling cars so is the 981 worse, the same or better handling than an Elise? (I realise that's quite a difficult thing to quantify!)

Love the car, always have done but the problem I found when I test drove the previous model was that it didn't feel special at normal driving speeds which is where most of these cars spend their time. If Porsche could engineer some Z4M/TVR low speed character into the car and then switch back to Porsche precision when the speed increases then it would be perfect.

Anyway, it was the soil, not the chives, that were the problem.
Think the new Cayman looks great, but it will never escape the "can't afford a 911" tag, sadly.
Shame, because no-one says you bought an M3 because you couldn't afford an M5, or a Clio RS because you couldn't afford a Megane RS.

For me that's a positive in a way, because it means there is one thing that people would be likely to say to me that indicates that I should completely discount their opinions on everything else as well. Same as with people who assume I bought a Rover engined Elise because I couldn't afford a Toyota engined one.

In the same way that anyone who calls a Boxster a "hairdressers car" immediately gets ignored.
It always strikes me that the Cayman is a far more suitable car for a UK B-road blast than the newer 911's, especially the 991 which although I like it a lot really has gotten rather large.

There will be a lot of confused under-30s reading this thread
It took me a minute for it to register, and I'm a massive fan.

Very nice but with a decent spec it's a £60K car.
Used GT3.2's are now low £70K's.
This sort of stuff makes me laugh. Used GT3.2's are now low £70K's.
If by 'decent spec.' you mean a >300bhp motor, a classy interior, supportive seats, great looking exterior (inc radio) and about the best fking sportscar chassis on the planet then it's actually a £50k car (or a £40k car if you can struggle along the highways and byways of this fair country with a mere 270bhp).
However if you mean by 'decent spec.' you mean a whole bunch of electronic doodahs, half a tonne of dead cow, bling wheels, automatic transmission, and louder stereo you can either choose to make a generous donation to Porsche's bottom line or buy a fking Lexus.
