Actually quite fancy a diesel, and a nice one at that, seems to fit the bill very nicely. BUT, what's the sort of annual mileage cut off (as a private purchase) where petrol is a far better proposal?

I only do about 3k miles per year, and that's mainly stop start type conditions, no motorway.

Has there ever been a different shape golf?

Don't they just change the headlights and bung a grand on the price every year?

Thought I read rumours a while back about this getting a twin turbo diesel lump (they already have one in the Amarok) But i suppose a 200bhp twin turbo derv would tread on the GTI's toes a bit too much and they would have to give the GTI a bit more power to distance itself. Hope Seat sticks in a twin turbo derv lump to create a Cupra diesel again as the Cupra/Cupra R has enough distance between.

Way, way north of 3k/year. You'd end up killing a diesel engine in no time with those journeys. I would suggest 15k+ to really make proper use of a diesel powerplant.

Besides, why would you want a diesel? For the money you could have a nicely specced Focus ST

Impressive combination of numbers, if you're after that sort of car.

I wonder if PH writers post these topics with a view that it is useful news to all of the users who have company cars or because they know these topics always bring out the worst of PH.

Where are the news releases for the Astra CDTI, the Focus TDI, the Volvo c30 et al.... no where to be seen on PH but a new Golf, that will attract all the people who aren't interested in buying one but will comment that it is too expensive, FWD, barely looks different to any other golf blah blah blah.!

As a company car driver it will be a massive consideration when I get to change my current A3. The lower tax is a massive plus.

Does anyone know when this is due to be released?
+1.

However, I'd like that engine in the bigger Octavia vRS. It may add a few g/km on the CO2 rate but it would make the larger car a great family wagon.

If the the car runs on 95RON petrol, then 3k/year works out cheaper than diesel. (IIRC, you need to do over 12k/year for diesel to become viable.)

But if you're considering a petrol hot hatch, bear in mind that although GTI-type turbo engines can run on 95RON, most actually need 98RON to deliver full beans. And more often than not, a litre of V-Power or Momentum99 costs more than a litre of diesel...

Nonsense to compare it with the 125D. If you spec up a 120D to the same spec as the Golf, it'll be a good few grand more expensive, let alone the 125D.
Care to speck one up to prove the point?:
Nope, it's too time consuming. Have a look at the standard equipment on a GT model. Then go to BMW and spec a SatNav (£1550), cruise control (£500), an equivalent Bluetooth function (£280), climate control (£400), PDC (£235) etc!

Now that is a VERY good point. A very good point indeed.

Too many auto journalists have drunk the VAG kool aid. It is pretty boring.

The fact is that this car is no more interesting than an Insignia or Astra diesel.

So why do they feel the need to tell us about Golfs, but not about the others?

I still can't get my head around a diesel Golf costing £25k.

For private buyers I agree - but company car drivers can offset the relatively high list price against the low Co2 rating and keep their company car tax reasonably low, especially for a car with decent performance and quality.

I might be handing back my 125d in the next few months and would be tempted with the Leon FR over the Golf though.
Yes, I agree. As a company car driver, it's all about the tax I suppose.
Mine's due to be changed in October, so now the PH news feed has become the performance/price/CO2 game!!

Currently in an (inherited) Audi A4 2.0 TDIe so I think I can come back to a quicker hatch, for the same, or lower tax biggrin

Just need 5 doors, <~£30K and a better fun to CO2 ratio than my A4!

Had a feeling it wouldn't be good for what I need. Focus ST? Funny you mention that, I'm already in one, on a '55 plate that is. Not sure I like it being a 5 door though.

Thanks for info though.

Thank you.

I'm still keen for PH to feature news about the new Golf GTI, the Audi S3 and other performance VAG variants as much as I like reading about a new M5 or a 911

I understand that there is a huge market for diesels and for many they are both tax efficient and fuel efficient which gives people an opportunity to run something exciting/expensive at the weekend but if I wanted to read up about the new TDI variant I would head to eg What Car not PH.

Engage the child locks on the rear doors and then you can still have the fun of having to get out of the car to let your friends in and out of the rear seats.

I think it's a bit narrow minded not to include diesels in PH as they give hot hatch numbers (just don't sound as good) The new Astra Bi-turbo diesel with 200bhp should give some really good lag free performance and with diesels mapping so good (the previous VAG 170 engine mapped to a good 220bhp/320lbft) and with this model being lighter and with nigh on 300lbft standard, it should absolutely fly, though sound a bit naff and be a bit heavier on the nose.

I quite agree. I like the new Astra a lot. It reminds me in looks of an Alfasud for some strange reason that I think only I can see... But the Astra Bi-turbo is a Vauxhall. PH editorial is clearly under the VAG spell, so they don't realise that people can get their diesel appliances from other suppliers...

hehe

I think the trick with the new ones is to go for the estate, in a subtle colour. It looks better (imo) and should keep the boy racers at bay. Once mountune get their act together, it would be a fairly potent sleeper smile
