Always liked these although I can't really say why. Bit of a sleeper, would show a clean pair of heels to plenty of warm hatches and the like.

No of course I'm not saying that. But most sheds I can see they have appeal in certain areas. Those would be:

Engine

Toys

Drive layout

looks

comfort

handling

I'd say that for a shed to be truly interesting it needs at least two out of three of those items to be right. It needs them so people go 'oh yeah, that's good!'

In this case, the car has one feature from this list, which is questionable at best. It's not a super powerful engine, nor does it have immense torque. It has a peaky power delivery which is enough for some people, but without any of the other items on my list, it's not enough.

If you want practical cars, don't read SOTW as practicality is not one of the major considerations when buying an interesting car. Sure, there have been practical sheds, but that was just a bonus rather than part of the core criteria for an 'interesting' shed.
Holy crap. A 1.8 Honda from the 90's doesn't have immense torque, and it's not super powerful. Are you are real good troll or just a bit simple?

Look at what else was about at the time - the turgid MK3 Golf, the revolting Ford Escort. The most interesting hot hatch about at the time was only 167ps.

But it's not got immense torque, and it's not as good as an MR2.

I always promised myself that if my 144 Primera se+ ever went wrong, I'd pick up one of these as I think they really are a smart and practical car. Looks aren't the best but you can't have it all for this price range.

2.5 years on and the Primera still lives and I'm enjoying its hassle free ownership but there is still something that attracts me back to the aerodeck. I don't think it would be much slower or expensive to improve, would it?

Fantastic SOTW choice.

I can get SWMBO's CRV to pick up it's skirts reasonably well at times. This is no doubt a hell of a lot lighter, has 17 bhp more, will handle a damn sight better, and is so discreet. Perfect!

I'd probably have bought it by now if I still lived in the Mids!

I tried to imagine an MR2 as a 5 door estate. My brain started to hurt. frown

I guess you could sandwich the engine under the rear seats just below the C-pillar with cooling vents coming out of the sides near the rear arches. And then we could have a 4 piece T-bar.

Think I'm gonna throw up.

Pirates Black is the actual name of the colour, looks black in the dark but is actually a dark purple.
Take a look at the "ruined" one further up this page.
I've always assumed it's similar to the colour BMW used at the time - Techno Violet - but when I got my car next to a BMW with that, the BMW is MUCH "purpler" - the Honda is basically black until sunlight or a camera flash hits it (go back to the slammed one 2 pages ago - that colour).

The official 'option' (it actually cost money to have it) was "Pirate's Black Pearl"

Someone was being funny at Honda HQ I guess... smile

No, I'm mentioning it in the context of the engine being the only redeeming feature of the car, and it's not THAT good a redeeming feature anyway.

Face it, it's not a great shed. It's not particularly interesting and isn't even that cheap.

Find me another 1990s practical, reliable and cheap to run 5-door with that power and a slippy diff.

Not everyone is looking for a 2 seater, or has the budget or spannering skills to run something of 'Italian' temperament...

rolleyes I suspect that if I was a powerfully built company director with a Porsche Cayenne and a Bentley Continental GT in my garage I might not be very interested in sub £1000 cars either. This is not the thread you are looking for.
That has made me chuckle.....I know some of the aove people you mention and can confirm those guys would not like these cars!
Point taken, still appreciate a good shed though (not too purchase, just to admire)

How did the Merc 190 make it into SOTW then? This is about a million times more interesting than one of those soggy old barges.

Reading the article, I was expecting to see 160k+ miles on it. 103k miles is perfectly fine for its age.
Same!

My Integra is on 102k with a similar engine, I wouldn't have said its high mileage :|

Consider how old it is, and then consider the amount of power it provides for a naturually aspirated engine. Most 1.8's putting out power like that these days are complicated turbocharged units.

90's Honda VTECS can stand proud in the current trend of low displacement/high output motors

I don’t tend to post much but as it’s a vti I thought I’d comment.

They are quirky estates that’s for sure! (frigging ugly at the back in all honesty)

I’ve had the 5 door hatch for 10 years now and it’s been a cracking car really having paid under £6k for it at the time with only 31k on the clock, I think it was near £18k new.

It’s been used from everything from track days to sleeping in at the WRC.

This weekend it was filled to the brim with logs and got caked in mud at a scout site.

It’s been pretty much trouble free, I had to replace a radiator last year but bar normal servicing & brakes that I do myself it’s cost me nothing so can’t grumble at all.

The fuel consumption isn’t so good though!

As mentioned many times the LSD is a nice touch but it could definitely do with a shorter ratio box and a 6th for motorways and the standard suspension is soft but I still think it sounds great when revving it to over 8K and there are not that many granddad wagons that will let you do that.

2001 the final year lists at 16k BOTH for hatch and estate
Oddly, rare run out 123 bhp SE Exec Sport was 1k more!
Have to admit Vti fits Q car tag perfectly
