I bought one of these around 8 years ago purely as a way to transport the dog around. I've never seen a dog look so scared in my life! That engine is fabulous, as is the gearchange. As for the negative comments about the looks, for me that's part of the charm smile

Perfect shed.

Reliable, Fast, high revving fun and a LSD in a car that looks totally anonymous.

I've owned a civic and they are very good cars.
Agree, I haven't owned one but a couple of friends of mine who are Honda mad have had a lcouple of these Aerodeck VTIs, the VTI-S hatch and Accord Type Rs I am really surprised at how much car and how good the spec is (LSD especially!) on these older VTI models.

So much so I am considering a <£1k VTI-S hatch as a daily abuser.

I'm surprised 300bhp hasn't turned up to tell us the MG ZS is a million times better ;-)

A mate has a VTIs hatch and his is surprisingly unreliable with lots of overheating problems. Also looks dreary (pretty much like the Rover it's based on / that is based on it), rides badly and isn't that quick no matter how much you rag it. On the plus side Aerodeck is a cool name for and estate, i'm surprised Honda didn't stick with it. Anyone remember the Accord Aerodeck? Much better looking car.
Yup I had a 3dr fastback Honda Accord Aerodeck from the age of 18. Loved that car and did 40k miles in it over 4 and a bit years. Being the 2.0 EXi model it absolutely flew and was cheaper insurance than any other 2.0 big car I could find. Oh and of course pop up headlamps are just awesome!

Always liked these 1.8 Civic Aerodecks - looked at a few but always ended up wanting a 2.2 prelude. Then I lost the plot, borrowed some money and bought a vx220 instead. Honda haven't made a car I've wanted for years now, let's hope the new NSX is something special.

"In Shed’s opinion, sunroofs are the invention of Satan."

Damn right. Once you've been dripped on for weeks, you'll never buy a sun-roof equipped car ever again.

If you put the S80 LSD gearbox (I think that's right) in these it transforms the car.

I've been considering one but insurance is high for what it is.

LSD and a sweet 4 pot that revs to 8k?

Yes please - great shed.

I wonder how it would compare to an EK4 or even an EK9? (which has similar horsies)
Better handling than a standard EK4 without a doubt, and significantly more practical and comfortable as an everyday car than an EK9, though I'd be surprised if the EK9 wasn't better on smooth tarmac. The EK9 will be somewhat quicker as well, and even the EK4 may have the edge on performance.

Drive a decent one and you will be genuinely surprised at how good a job Rover did on this car. Just a shame they have so much of a thirst and slightly ropey build quality.

I agree, despite it's shortcomings it's quite an entertaining car for the money, and very practical (though even the 5 door hatchback has a very large load space). The torque biasing LSD is excellent, you simply don't know it's there most of the time apart from the surprising amount of traction you get. I wish my EP3 came with one.

These really do make me salivate, not because they are awesome or anything, but usually if one arrives at our house it heralds the arrival of a delicious takeaway of some description.

What's not to like? Fast (ish), practical, reliable and most importantly, unpretentious.

Very nearly bought one of these for the missus around 10 years ago but got her an Impreza Wagon instead.

Superb shed!!! Better than the usual German barges.

Does your local takeaway run a fleet of Civic VTis for deliveries then? Odd choice.

Well, not exclusively but there is a certain pattern, usually late nineties and Japanese, wouldnt be out of place, I dont generally check the badge on the back, though the temptation is strong the arrival of steaming paper bags of wonder quells my enthusiasm, it could turn up in a Mclaren F1 and if there was a Chicken Kebab and chips I would still probably ignore it.

There are some pretty negative comments about this. When these came out in 1997/98 they were way ahead oin performance terms of almost anything that was priced even close. They have a fantastic engine and handle pretty well. At the time they were very well thought of. Add to that extreme reliabilty and this does pretty much everything a useable shed should do. Many of the comments must be purely based on having very little idea of what they are talking about!

The only pants thing about these was they have a tiny fuel tank so sometimes need a refuel at just over 200 miles, if you are driving it properly. Find anyone who had one when they were new and they are likely to have pretty fond memeories of most of the experience I would say. They are closer than you would think to an Integra Type R and no one gives them a slagging do they.

I prefer the look of most estate cars - except those that so obviously use the rear doors from their saloon/hatch brethren.

Just no.

This is a very unimaginative shed. It's not very interesting and it's a cheap japanese car. You expect them to be under a grand. Plus with the high mileage there must be plenty of cars around that are more interesting for less money.

Even the MR2 last week had done stratospheric miles and had nasty wheels. I've seen nicer ones for under a grand.

Tut tut SOTW, tut tut. The best motoring feature on the 'net is rapidly becoming an afterthought for the PH massive. Shame on you.

Hmmn, I suppose it'll last forever and be surprisingly quick, but they just look like a pensioner's car, as someone earlier said. Hey ho, I suppose the point of SOTW is that we can't be TOO picky and I suppose under the skin it's vaguely interesting.

The Civics I like were the old 4 door saloon VTis. My old man had one; a great fast little car, it seemed to me sitting in the passenger seat. Sadly it was pinched in an impressively well-planned theft.

I quite like these and have looked at them before.

People on here are always recommending to sub £1k 'what car' threads Nissan Primeras and other dreary but bullet proof Japanese run abouts. These are far more interesting than most hum drum sub £1k cars, I mean they have an LSD FFS!
Decent spec, lively engine, a good steer, reliable, cheap to maintain and practical too. For me that would almost be the perfect shed if I was in the market for one.
