The Thursday is the Moving Motor Show, so is more geared around new cars, with prospective customer test drives up the hill (if you've got your cheque book with you). AFAIK, the 'classic' stuff doesn't start running up the hill until the Friday.
Thanks i will stick to my usual sunday visit the tickets are getting pricey like so many other events.

I'll be giving Goodwood a miss this year then!

No interest in fast beetles, they're bad enough to drive when they're slow!

Most over-rated car of all time.

Air-cooled until 1998, STILL rear-engined in 2013 FFS. Come on porsche, the joke's over.

If Ferrari, or anyone else, came out with a rear-engined car now they would be the laughing stock of the industry. Quite rightly.

Ahh but it's a huge success so it must be good right? So is Justin Beiber, does that mean his music must be good?
Someone should (gently) remind him that there are no fast BEETLES that have been endurance raced at LeMans...Daytona....Sebring....World Rally Championship...sports car classes worldwide....Paris-Dakar....it is the single sports car design that has done it all, and done it well. It has evolved with the times better than any other, even if, as he notes, they started out with a continuation of what he considers a 'flawed" basic architecture that the oompany has managed to turn into a strength through continuous development and attention to detail.

Let alone its tidy size and daily practicality as a daily driver.

All that said, I'd sure like to see Aston or Jaguar rain on their parade at the Sarthe.

In all honesty, who cares what he thinks? He doesn't like Porsche, but many do, me being me one of them. Wasn't interested in Porsche myself until I drove one....then bought one, so I'll be going this year purely for the 911 fun and games smile

Pretty much everyone knows 911s are generally very good. I think a lot of the anger against them stems from them being seen as representing some sort of exclusive club that people outside don't really understand. The myriad of models over the years annoys some people too as they don't understand the difference between the models even though it's extremely simple. I also think some people resent Porsche's success relative to the fortunes of various British sports car manufacturers. There is a reason for this, and I think everyone secretly knows what that reason is.

As for the air-cooled point, I've been in a 993 Turbo and it was very good by most standards. That's probably why they are still worth so much. As for the rear engined point, Porsche now make a range of front and mid-engined cars, with more types of both on the way. So the argument seems to be, Porsche should discontinue one model range even though alternative designs are already on sale. It's an unusual line of reasoning.

Bracing to see the discussion as to whether, after 50 years, the 911 is a boring beetle. Probably too soon to say - give it a few more decades for people to decide. Let's not rush to judgement.

If I had the money my garage would have a 911 in it and a Caterham 7. Both superb cars in their own right, but what I dont understand is why when the Lotus / Caterham 7 had its 50th birthday a few years back Goodwood still did not even recognise its existence and yet they seem to be dedicating this years FOS to 50 years of Porsche???
The Seven is the only sportscar ever to have entered a Grand Prix (and it didnt come last!) A sports car that was so good on the track it was banned from racing. A sportscar that usually cost only a fraction of the cars it was beating, A sportscar that is British, and generally uses off the shelf components from the major manufacturers, not bespoke multi thousand pound components made specially for it. Also there are only a few cars ahead of it on the Top Gear power lap board, (and all of those are multi multi million pound supercars!) Arguably if the Seven had not been built Lotus would not exist ,becuase it was the one car that kept selling (and keeping Lotus going by bringing in badly needed cash) when Colin Chapman was developing the technically complex elite and then the Elan.
So to recap, A BRITISH designed and built car that has ALSO been in production for over 50 years, was so quick, other racing teams got it banned from racing, was the only sportscar to enter a Grand Prix,
A car that has only a (tiny few) collossally (Veyron, Koeniggsegg, Gumpert) priced supercars ahead of it on the TG power lap board, but which is affordable for the common petrol head. A sportscar that many believe, anyone who is into cars should drive at least once in their lives. and it does not get the same level of recognition in the UK. In fact Goodwood does not even seem to recognise its existence, and the only similar vehicle seen at the revival was Chris Rea`s Lotus 6. Strange how they big up 50 years of Porsche, but ignore 50 years of the Seven.

Having owned a few 997s including turbo and turbo s they are outstanding cars, round town or on track, flat out on autobahns, no weather stops the 4wd versions, cup cars are amazing, gt3 versions the best compromise of track and road, own one, own a few and then criticise, once you have experienced what a 911 brings, you won't look back. This doesn't mean you cant like other cars too, I have a 968 race car which is great fun and a 458 spider coming soon......they all offer something quite different but still automotive excellence.....

Belper Jim - You appear to have hit the nail squarely on the head. I naively thought that it was do with cars, but like always I guess all it ever comes down to is the money.
Still if I could afford it, the two cars I would HAVE to have in my garage would be a 911 and a Seven,
Poles apart in some ways, but alike and both brilliant cars in their own particular way.

Must admit, I am not a particular fan of the FOS (although to be fair it always seems to be excellently well run) But owing to the 1 road nature of the event, even if you are lucky enough to get somewhere near the track, all you will be most likely to see is the top of a drivers crash helmet going by or the top of an air intake / spoiler going by, and with some cars being very low to the ground you dont even see this much, and are only able to hear the noise (which in many respects is even more dissapointing) I am not a fan of sitting in an allotted seat in a stand, as this gives too much of a fixed view of just one part of the track.
I often wondered why they dont get the hay bales as far back from the track as edge as possible to give a much longer field of view for the watching public (and to give drivers a little more room to sort out an `off' BEFORE they hit the bales. I have seen quite few bits of rare and expensive machinery badly damaged which could have been avoided, through having the hay bales far too close to the track. (of course there is not much they can do about the wall though)

They'd have to move a lot of trees lining the corners beyond the house to achieve this. While views in front of the house are restricted there are plenty of spots further up that give a full view of the cars and bikes running up the hill.
