and I suppose we have there, in many ways, the wonders of capitalism in a nutshell. Exactly the same product, but you could end up paying nearly 3 times as much, or, in hard cash, £160 more, by buying it as a branded product in a high street brand store. Amazing

Halfords trade card actually works on bulbs.

Normal H4 bulb, retail is about £10, with the trade card £3!

Nearly fell over when the guy told me! I was like £90?!?! For a Bulb?!

Jeez......

Looked on Amazon and you can get two D2S Xenon bulbs for £20!
To be fair, Amazon charge £43 for a single Osram D2S bulb.

I've no experience of Xenon bulbs, but I suspect the really cheap ebay/amazon ones won't be the same quality as Philips/Osram/etc.

Euro Car Parts seem to want £98.40 for a Philips D2S bulb though...

I guess shopping around is the answer. I did buy some Bosch wiper blades from Amazon this week, and they were a lot cheaper than Halfords. But then running a shop costs a lot more than running a website, and if I'd needed them same day then Halfords would have got my business.

At 10 am on a Tuesday morning it is expensive, but at 7:30pm or on a Sunday afternoon it is a God send. Sure Amazon is cheaper and yes so are many Car parts retailers, but what Halfords does is be open late at night and at weekends.

Fine it might be a few quid more expensive, but when you need something in a hurry it is there.

I admit the stock is rubbish compared to what in once was, but I know they will be genuine bulbs if I buy it from them (been stung with copies from eBay and Amazon Market place) and I don't have to wait for the post to get there.

Few weeks ago I was looking for a new digital tyre inflator and Halfrauds price was $36.99 in Greenock.

Checked on the phone for cheaper cost of the same model.

I asked the counter assistants if they would match Amazon cost and they looked at me if I was insane.

Was told, "Naw we cannae dae that".

Then asked why not?

Was told, "We cannae change eh prices an ats how much it costs".

Told them ok I'll be saving £14.99 going to Amazon.

Probably one of the next in line to go bust as they cannot or don't want to compete with online sales.

We've been getting ripped off for years and the general public puts up with it so as not to cause a fuss.

Next time you're in a shop price the same thing on your phone and ask them to match the price elsewhere!

Don't even start me on the fuel cost differences outside the Inverclyde area!

They won't even match their own online prices in store! I was buying an inner tube for my bike. Was on their website for half price so assumed it would be the same price in store. However when I went in it was full price, so I asked if they could match it and was told no.

So I went onto the website on my phone, while standing at the cashdesk, ordered it and selected collect in store. 2 minutes later the order shows up on the cashiers computer and I paid half price! Totally crazy!

Not really. The likes of Halfords have higher overheads than online sellers, so their prices have to be higher.

Yes, definitely higher overheads compared to other competitors. Why can't Halfords think of a better business model though? Provide something the online retailers cannot provide. Stock more variety of items for example - I for one might be tempted to pay a bit more if I can get it same day.

I wanted some allen keys.

Halfords: £16
B&Q: £4

The tools and other car products are also much cheaper from b&q.
Is that the exact same allen keys? If not, then there's a huge difference in price and quality between poor quality tools and good quality ones. The Halfords professional ones (or whatever they call them now) are pretty good quality in my experience and not too expensive.

That's not to say other things aren't expensive though... Even "normal" bulbs are pretty expensive there compared to other places - but I guess you're paying for the convenience of being able to get something instantly.
No. Halfords decided to only stock one set of Allen keys. B&q stock 5 different sets.

The so called professional 'range' wrench Has broken after 3 months. I have to smack it on the floor each time I need to change its direction. Absolute sthouses.

Christ. This whole Halfords / expensive thing has been done to death on here before.

And with regard to your broken 'Professional' wrench - it has a lifetime guarantee, so instead of smacking it on the floor like a disgruntled gorilla, just take it back for a replacement unit...

Halfords have a business model that caters for the terminally disinterested and stupid when it comes to cars. If people have no interest / can't be arsed to understand and engage with some of the basics of looking after their vehicles, then Halfords fills in that gap in the market very well...especially with their expensive 'we fit' service, which I always seem to see some punter (usually women) using when I pitch up at the local branch. And good luck to them I say...anyone who sees a niche and provides for it is a good businessman!

For everyone else, like most of us on here, we're a bit more savvy when it comes to buying parts, and therefore use the internet or specialist factors to supply our parts...no?

And for those occasions when you REALLY need something whilst you're spannering cars of a Sunday or late evening, and you really can't wait, then Halfords provides salvation in their Sunday and late-night opening hours, do they not?

And if you're REALLY involved in cars, like me and some other savvy posters on here, then even when you have to succumb to using Halfords as a last resort - you HAVE all got trade cards like me....haven't you???

In which case - parts, tools and service items are at a pretty palatable price...

Anyone paying full price in Halfords is possibly a bit of a coffee receptacle biggrin

Heya, wow, nice someone remembers that! biggrin

Yep - is going full steam ahead. I am halfway through a local higher education college's adult 'access to medicine' course...basically an adult learner's course for those who, like me, didn't go to college after school and get A levels. This replaces those to get University entry qualifications.

So far, I've managed to get 'distinction' grades for all my assignments! *smug git* So it's going well...

And in the meantime, I've had interview requests from 3 Universities for their Paramedic Science courses, which I've attended...and so far, I am waiting to hear back from 2 of them, but I have had an offer back from Oxford, to start in September on their 2 year FdSc degree in Paramedic Science.

So, if I don't get offers from the other 2 in the next few weeks, (one of which would be better for me as it's a bit closer) then as of September, I will be at Oxford full time...and then after 2 years, will be a fully-fledged, licenced to practice Para with South Central Ambo Service!
