IIRC i used to use it as a close, along the lines of "if i can get it waived would you have the car?" pi$$ed the SM off no end.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. All punters negotiate the price. EH aren't stating that the price is fixed are they?

We charge $150 per car for doc fees and we never waive it. Never lost a sale because of it either.

The only difference there is nothing to be done over here for the documents.

Write a name and address on a V5c.

They'll have HPI'd the car when they bought it at a caost of about 50p. So it's basically a £99 charge to get your hands on a copy of the HPI they've already done.

Is that standard in the US?

A full finance HPI that provides insured cover is much more than that, but I agree with your fundamental point.

Our insured HPI checks are around a fiver.

We used to pay 60p per check.

For a fully insured check?

As a customer, I would never buy from a place that attempts to charge an 'admin' fee. Just a point of principle for me.

Gents, a favour to ask.

Anyone have specific trade knowledge on GL-Class Mercedes - do they fall apart, are there specific models to avoid etc? I know they're huge, thirsty, and depreciate like nothing else on earth, but I love the look of them and I'm very drawn to the GL420 CDI.

Had a busy couple of days, we're a bit short of target so management are dreaming out with 3 weeks of he quarter left.

Sold a few Dacias, a few Clios and a Volvo C70 so pretty decent.

Need to ramp it up and have a cracking month as I'm on holiday next month so need to have a 'cushion'!

I bought a new car (pre reg) for my mother yesterday, quite painless..... It was actually more than I wanted to spend, but once they agreed to pay low end of various cap/glass valuations for privately owned, low miles, fsh, px hatchback, I paid the holding deposit.
Quite painless up to now, let's see how they pull apart the px when they see it after I honestly described a few bumper parking scrapes?
Can I ask why you didn't take the PX with you?
I'm always amazed at the number of people who expect good money for something we have to guess about.

I sold a new Clio to a lady today who didn't have her px with her. She also doesn't want it until September hehe

Still, an order is an order.

80 miles away, car was more than I wanted to pay.....So preliminary discussion, if you can pay low end of book price for privately owned service car, we may be on for a deal.
Now we have dialogue, it is worth taking the time to collect my mothers car, drive up to the dealers and return with the new car if we are both happy.
If it was all done at distance that makes sense, there was no guide that was the case in your original post.

We get loads and loads of people who expect us to do a deal based on a swapper they've left at home, with a distance sale it relies on trust from both sides, with a deal in the showroom it always makes me wonder what they're trying to hide.

Some of us have likely owned more cars, paid for with our owned money than most of you guys selling them.

If I tell the guy, it was bought new, taxed and moted until when and has full verifiable stamped main dealer service history......then it has and will be shown.....I have been honest and have nothing to hide...straight away you assume that the customer lacks integrity.
The fact of the matter is when people come in without their part ex and expect us to value it blind they tend to be a bit vague on, well pretty much everything and if they try and come across as knowing everything about the car we can tell that they actually don't know everything about their car and in a lot of cases are guessing.

It's amazing the amount of people who will travel to see a car and won't bring their part ex with them

Doing it over the phone when there is a bit of distance involved is a different matter entirely, I've done many deals where I haven't seen the trade in until the buyer comes to collect the car they are buying and vica versa for them, as long as the correct questions are asked on both sides and those questions are answered honestly then there is no issue.

I had a GL320CDI on an 08 plate from new - hence user name! Cannot comment on longevity and reliability beyond the two year point but they were definately a well put together very large SUV. I drove the 420, it is quick for a 3 tonne car, but marginally thirstier than the 320. I never saw anything more than 28mpg in my GL. I would say that they are more durable in terms of build quality than a comparable Range Rover or Disco.
