Maybe this is the time for Caterham to drop the Seven completely and concentrate on their global aspirations of F1 domination and mid-engined Lotus slayers?
Why on earth would you drop the mainstay of a company that is as iconic to Caterham as the 911 is to Porsche and has had almost as much time to develop and mature?!?!?jimbob82 said:

love the way the governement will bend over backwards for the likes of Nissan and VW etc. but they dont give a st about british car manufacturing heritage. At least its retirement flats not a shopping mall. Or does this mean the average speed on the roads will now go in the opposite direction (maybe literally) ; ) ; p
+1 I think its disgraceful. Typical though."Dear Caterham Cars,
You have to move out because we're putting flats on your factory.
Much Love,
D.C.
Prime Minister"
???
That's such a shame to hear. I remember going to their original showroom which was located elsewhere in Caterham the first time I went to take a look at one in the flesh.
After I bought mine (1994 I think - nearly 20 fscking years ago??? When did I get so old?) I would swing by this showroom and very nearly upgraded to an R500 on one visit. It was probably the sensible thing not to but I still regret not going for it.
Still, hopefully, they're moving on to better things. I hope that whatever else happens the 7 stays core to what they do and isn't threatened by other projects going tits up.

It's not the site of the original factory - that was in Town End, Caterham-on-the-Hill.
At the time their current site was a Vauxhall dealership - Station Garage.
I know this as I'm a Caterham lad born and bred, and used to press my nose up against the windows of the original Caterham showroom/factory many years ago.
Still sad that they're leaving the town though, even if only temporarily.

Just round the corner from the Caterham Cars showroom is the dreary site of the old Rose & Young Mercedes dealership, empty for more than 20 years or so. Rather odd, therefore, that Caterhams's succesful site is being redeveloped whereas the old Mercedes site is so ramshackle and desperately in need of redevelopment.
Caterham (the town) used to be quite nice, but not now. Too many old buildings, closed shops etc.

As a resident of caterham for the last 10 years, and literally a stones throw from the previous caterham showroom, i can assure you the residents of caterham are very annoyed about the subject highlighted! Caterham is a fantastic place to live, with a great claim to fame 'caterham cars' it was a very sad day to see the company leave, the only boarded up unit unused in caterham is the previous mercedes garage 'rose and young' which would be a fantastic unit for caterham cars to occupy! But i believe the owner of this premises was not playing ball. As for 279's comments on caterham high street being A 'dreadful place' i would have to wholeheartedly disagree with this sweeping statement, totally unfounded in my eyes, but hey what do i know! Bring back caterham cars!!

To which, on the final day, the town (in the shape of Morrisons) thanked the many Caterham owners who flocked to the town by stopping Caterhams parking in the municipal car park.Rockerfellar1 said:

Welcome to PH Come on, if you come down the hill to the High st roundabout then go down the main High St towards Whiteleaf, at the end of the High st on the left its all boarded up! You only have to do Google street View to see it! That might be the old Merc dealership I'm not sure, Im talking about down opposite the Co-op Supermarket! Empty buildings like that do nothing for the rest of the area than bring it down! And its been like that for a very long time!

Sad times Spent a fair bit of time in their showroom there over a number of months lusting after one, while i was waiting on another car to sell, but they were always more than happy for me to hang around look at the cars, etc, while i sorted out the sale of the other car and was finally able to put down a deposit on one
I still remember collecting the car from them. The train journey there was a nightmare but at 8.30am on a cold spring Saturday i arrived knowing i'd have to drive the car back round the M25 with the risk of rain as well as the cold weather but i still took a rather long detour via the country roads and what should have been a 1hour 15minute drive home turned into a 3+ hour one
