No he has a point I'm sure Landrover can build some reliability issues into it somewhere smile

For number chasing and efficiency I'm sure it's a winner. For driver involvement and reliability.............Not so sure!

Are you/JLR's press people really claiming that the Evoque will be the first vehicle worldwide to use ZF's new 9-speed gearbox?

Have you/they not heard of the 2014MY Jeep Cherokee?

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/22/2014-jeep-chero...

Do you not know that Chrysler/Jeep/Fiat Group have been working with ZF too, on the first usage of ZF's new 9-speed for FWD/All-wheel drive installation?

Did you know that as well as the 2014MY Jeep Cherokee the 2013 Dodge Dart is slated to get the new ZF 9-speeder later this year too?

If you do know that, and know that the new Jeep Cherokee is expected to hit US showrooms in the Fall of this year, and that Land Rover will not get the 9-speed-fitted Evoque into showrooms until early to mid 2014 at the earliest, and that their claim to be the 'First' rests solely only on them showing a supposed 9-speed Evoque prototype at Geneva next week, why are you even deigning to run this ridiculous story?

To put it clearly, Jeep are/will be the 'First'.

Land Rover are doing their usual spoiler operation schtick, deceiving the gullible, abetted by compliant hacks.

Good grief.

OK OK, we heard you the first time. Now trot-on, besides, no one cares about Jeep.

does 50% more gears mean it'll be 50% more expensive to fix/replace?

Some way to go as 2x11 (Campagnolo of course) = 22!

I wondered when benzpassion would pop in to say something bad about jlr. Two more gears then his beloved cars. Oh dear.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Historically auto boxes were disliked as they were slower, used more fuel, heavier and felt slower to change. These days, outside of hard-core track cars etc, the are very few reasons to order a manual. Even less if you drive in town.

Aren't they those cars they blow up on the A Team. Do they still make them?

This:

Has Evoqued Evolved into this:

Is it any better? Who knows, but multi-bladed razors always seem to clog up.

I suppose a gearbox with a humongous number of ratios does allow a gear for perfect rpm for all varieties of emissions testing.

All it needs is a low-range transfer box and it genuinely will be a mountain bike!!

But given the positive reaction to the ZF 8-Speeder, in all honesty I expect this will be more of the same - brilliant to use.

I only have a simple brain but surely as the number of ratios gets higher the closer in real world terms it becomes to CVT anyway.
Exactly this.

But if it works on this car/SUV, then great.

love, love, love the 8 speed in my 640d. Imperceptable changes, even on downshift.

My biggest criticism of the Evoque, having test driven it, was the fussy, slow and jerky 6sp auto box as compared to the 8 speeder in the XF which shares the same 2.2d powerplant.
I agree. The ZF 8 speed 'box in my dad's BMW is just superb. I love it.

I drove a seven speed auto E class and compared to my "normal" five speed auto it was constantly changing up and down the bloody gears! Drove me bonkers!

Still, I suppose it's something that one would get used to. I hope so, I just bought one. frown

If its an epicyclic based gearbox 9 gears is actually not that difficult in reality from an engineering point of view.

I've probably never noticed because I'm always getting moaned at for playing with the paddles too much smile

i don't understand all the negative hype on PH.

better economy
better acceleration
the extra mass will be totally negligible

and (having been in some cars with the 8 speed box) the changes are SO smooth and unnoticeable i don't see the harm in having 20 if you can't feel the gear changes.

So, why is it too many? or would everyone on PH have us using 3 speed auto gearboxes because it's "enough"?

genuine question by the way
+1
Don't really see what's to complain about given it's an auto box. (9 speed manual would be a different story and a pita smile )

This is the unfortunate truth. My commute isn't remotely enjoyable. There's a turn out from a single-track country lane onto a dual carriageway but that's as fun as it gets. Admittedly some auto boxes are pigs, but having driven a mate's 8-speeder in his 520 it was actually quite a revelation; I wonder how many people's opinions are based on old-tech autos?

Anyone considered that more gears actually puts LESS strain on the gearbox, drive shaft, flywheel, and clutches?

If you change from 3000 to 2000 and accelerate hard, there is a lot of engine motion to manage, if you change from 3000 to 2700, the amount of energy to dissipated through the clutches and flywheel will be less.

Definitely beneficial on up shifts.

Just a thought - could be nonsense.
